I must do in the winter, not much going on but a fantastic quiet or romantic break away. Very clean, friendly staff. Great views, attention to detail great, a stunning fire place with plenty wood, olive oil more you can use etc

Really a fantastic weekend breakaway.

We recently spent a week-end at Themika in one of the Guest Cottages (the larger one - two bedrooms 'Africa Cottage'). We enjoyed our time there, however, mention must be given to the following...

Leaving Cape Town after work on Friday (+-5.30pm) we only arrived in Tulbagh about 7.30. We got hopelessly lost, midst the heavy downpour of rain, finding Themika Farm. Directions on their website aren't clear and there's no proper signage en-route. After speaking with the manager and housekeeper numerous times (in-between getting very close to stuck in the mud on another farm - DO NOT, after getting on the gravel road, take the 1st left! Instead, carry on until you see a clear fork. Go left, carry on until you see a small sign on left saying Themika - not very visible at night though), we finally ended up on the right farm but again, no signage to the cottages so we ended up at the Main House. We eventually ended up at our front door.

The housekeeper, Maria, met us on arrival. The house was spacious and comfortable, great big kitchen but TV vs couch positioned in awkward spot for comfortable viewing. Also, would have been great to have fireplace in the lounge (fireplace in main room which we weren't informed of. No wood was provided for and we didn't bring any with so that didn't help!) Only 1 heater provided which we kept in the bedroom.

Also, take note that they use solar panels for hot water so when you turn on the tap/shower wait a while for the hot water to come through... (we only learnt of this Saturday morning after calling to find out why there's no hot water?!)

On the positive side of things, great location in a tranquil setting. Beautiful, scenic mountain & landscape views. Loved that I could take my dogs with :)

3x Cottages a few steps apart so great for a big group travelling together.

Ideal for a week-end getaway for couples or family or group of friends but not recommended as a long holiday stay rental (there are no on-site activities).

What could make Themika more appealing:

- Proper signage and more clear directions on website/confirmation letter
- Kids play area/jungle gym for some on-site activity offering
- Fireplace in Lounge
- Provide one set of wood on arrival
- Gas hot water/geyser (especially in Winter when the sun doesn't shine much)
- Information booklet in the Cottage

Thanks for a great getaway though, Themika. We returned to 'reality' relaxed and rejuvinated!

Our group of 16 friends booked and nothing that we had ever experienced before was quite like this country experience. close to cape town, great facilities, we swam in three different dams, in the pool, hiked in the mountains, mtb'ed on stunning mtb routes, met wonderful locals, felt safe and well looked after- superb-thanks to the whitaker family

What an awesome spot !! Rustic and beautiful. This is as close as you can get in living in your own farmhouse. Amazing MTB routes from the backyard. Host was just awesome ! Great wine, actually the best Chenin and Shiraz I have had in a very long time 🤤

Stayed in one of the cottages. On the plus side, the views were lovely and the area very peaceful. Sadly, no fireplace in the lounge (in an area that gets VERY cold at night) and the fireplace in the main bedroom (stove type) was not connected to the flue, thus making it purely ornamental. There was an oil heater, but in an open plan area with high ceilings that doesn't even dent the cold, so not really possible to spend time with friends indoors... Quite a few spiders and cob webs too, don't expect too much. Beds and linen were good though.
