My wife and I stayed here for one night. The husband-wife owners have lived literally all over the world and have stories to tell. We got the last of the 4 rooms available which was small but with a large bathroom. Cosily decorated but no fuss. At Rand 700, the least expensive B&B of the four we stayed at. They have two cute (and quiet) little dogs which adds to the informal atmosphere. The attached restaurant features professional chefs and has a relaxing large outdoor patio. The B&B itself is on the historic Church Road, a visit to which is the chief reason why people come to Tulbagh - to see a whole street restored to what it was 100+ years ago. The B&B itself was not fully destroyed in the earthquake, so you actually get to live in a heritage home! Quiet and nice. It's only one block from the busy main street, but it's a world away.

This is a pleasant guest house, in an historic building, in Church Street, Tulbagh, which is famous for its very old buildings. These buildings have been restored after suffering damage in an earthquake in the area in the 1960's. The owners, who are English, are very friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Our room was pleasant with doors opening on to the terrace at the front of the property. There is also an attractive pool area.

We ate in the attached Pielow's restaurant. The food was very good. We enjoyed our stay.

The breakfast was delicious (fruit salad, yogurt, muesli, bacon, eggs etc.) and the beds were extremely comfortable. An added bonus was the filter coffee and plunger in our room. The room was neat and tidy and all staff we interacted with were very friendly. Beautiful artwork in the dining room

We booked for three nights but extremely disappointed by the hotel and the restaurant - left after two nights. What I found amazing was the management did not even ask why! When we arrived we certainly were not made welcome - this is your room! There was no detail of amenities, breakfast, etc.
We were in the Ruby bedroom. It was well furnished in the style suitable for the property. Bathroom was adequate but really needed updating. There comes a point when being authentic just is not acceptable. The shower was over the freestanding Victorian bath but with no curtain - just a plastic screen on one side - the floor flooded each time we had a shower. Bedding was really clean and crisp. Disappointed that we had no terrace as the door was locked and a large unit in front of it.
One of our big disappointments was the swimming pool. When we arrived the water was filthy. The area round the pool was very neglected. The wooden loungers had no covers. Towels were hanging on pegs above a very grubby dogs bed - with dog! We didn't know if these were clean or had been used by other guests and left to dry. Obviously a no go area.
Our second disappointment was the restaurant. From ordering it took 65 minutes for the food to arrive. Husbands steak was okay but my pasta was inedible - far too salty. I was asked if I wanted a dessert but my choice was not available. They offered Pavlova. Obviously the South African version is different to all others I have eaten. I was served two meringue nests - one filled with warm lemon cheese and the other filled with ??. Sliced banana on the plate and a small scoop of ice cream was my Pavlova.
Breakfast on our first morning was little better. We never got the toast we asked for, couldn't find the staff but as there were no jams, butter, etc on the table then we decided we were not getting any.
Our second breakfast - different staff - just the opposite. Dining room was lit, jams, etc on table. Good service and no complaints.
After two nights we were not enjoying our stay and so decided to move. Incredibly no one asked why. If I was the owner I certainly would want to know why guests were leaving.i told the lady on reception about the pool. She said it was the pump and she would tell uncle - owner?
Before we left we looked at the pool - what a transformation. Obviously whilst we were out the previous day - all day as we didn't want to be in the pool area - they had really worked hard cleaning the pool and surroundings. Did they hear us complaining?
It still had towels on hooks but no dog basket. Beds no covers but all the furniture was nicely presented.
If the pool area and breakfast service had been like this when we arrived then we would have been happy to stay indeed would probably stayed another day.
Now the management need to ensure this level of cleanliness and service.

Had reserved a table for Saturday evening (12 April) and duly arrived to an unlit dining rom. Entered through the main door to be confronted by the owner. We duly announced that we had a table booked only to be TOLD that the restaurant was closed and that he had no bookings for the evening. No apology or question as to who had made the booking etc. His whole attitude was GO AWAY.... and so we did.

We later advised our host hotelier - who had made the reservation for us - of the situation and he was horrified. He showed us the confirmation of the booking he had made.

We stopped about 100 metres down the road and had a lovely dinner at READERS where we were made most welcome and enjoyed excellent service.

Tulbagh itself was wonderful, filled with history, safe and fun. Children still playing skip-the-rope. Reminded me of the times when kids were still acting like kids and not pushed in front of the TV or PS. As far as De Oude Herberg B & B is concerned, they will never see me again. Bed and breakfast was included in our very expensive one night stop. We were asked what time we would like to have breakfast, we advised that we are traveling very far and would like to leave by 8am. The manager then quickly responded by saying they do not serve breakfast at all before 9am. I was shocked by this, as he did not even offer to arrange for anything earlier. Please keep in mind that this is a very expensive guest house, and it did not state that breakfast could not be served before 9am on the terms and conditions. If I knew all of this I would have rather booked myself and my family in at the Radisson Blu in Cape Town. The floors were dirty in the room itself. There was Port available on the nightstand of each room, but no effort was made to ensure that the glasses were cleaned, and there was still a thick line of red dried port wine in the bottom of the glass. The bathroom was also not properly cleaned, as there were human hair everywhere, and a very suspicious stain on the tile next to the loo. I was disgusted and massively disappointed. The best thing about my room is that it had Air-con! There is also no Room Service available, as we requested this but were advised that we need to be seated either outside on within the restaurant.

This is the third time that I have taken a break for a couple of days to De Oude Herberg Guesthouse in the historic Church Street in Tulbagh, but the first under the new ownership of Jan du Toit and his wife. The deco is fabulously old world, with antiques liberally and tastefully scattered around, and with leatherbound books filling many a cabinet. The breakfasts were generous and tasty and the service great. I will be back!

Arrived in Tulbagh and checked in/checked out of another guest house where I could not stay. Booked De Oude Herberg online and arrived before the owner was even aware of my reservation. No problem! I was welcomed warmly and at once made to feel at home. Good room (even better beds) and a beautiful, established garden. Shady nooks to sit - the rooms through the garden at the back have the most tranquil veranda. The house is an absolute treasure trove of beautiful furniture, books and paintings. Breakfast - I had the best ever scrambled eggs! Will surely go again!

This is an excellent guest house in a beautiful village. It is situated in Church street where there is lots of old building to visit. The room at the guest house was excellent and the breakfast was brilliant. This is the place to stay if you visit this lovely village.

Had an exceptional visit to the Patriot Restaurant this past weekend...we were greeted by Jan the owner who has a fine interest in art and antiques, so the entire place is a museum in itself. We had the butter chicken and pecan ice cream 'mess' to finish - which were both delicious.

Highly recommended for both the ambiance and food!
