As the hire car slowly approached from the foot of the mountain, La Hacienda’s panoramic beauty came to light. Located in the historic region of Old Grand Port, La Hacienda offers the perfect location to unwind for a few days. The staff (Samuel) were very kind throughout our stay, recommending the best way to trek up Lion Mountain, helping us order take-away food from Mahebourg and thankfully helping us start our car again after a flat battery. The stunning sunset views, daily breakfast, giant tortoises, sounds of the birds and all-round great vibes make La Hacienda the perfect place to unwind.

The views are breathtaking and the studio villas are lovely. We stayed for 3 nights. Good air conditioning and kitchen supplies. There is a small pool and even some tortoises! Sameer was very helpful, we had a few problems with the wifi in our villa but Sameer did his utmost to solve the issues. The site is beautiful and surrounded by forest, at night we could even hear monkeys running around!

Amazing setup. Very well situated at Foot of Mountain Lion. Peaceful retreat with great views on the bay of Grand Port. Rustic, charming and a lovely serene atmosphere. Nice breakfast offered and good staff.

Nice cosy place with good modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, air con, satellite TV, and fully equipped kitchen. The view is splendid. Outside there's a dip pool, and a small pathway that takes you to the turtles. If you're lucky you might spot a few monkeys. The few staffs are very friendly.

Negative aspects are:

1. The breakfast though is quite poor. There are no fruits and no freshly squeezed juice (too bad for such an naturalistic environment).

2. Do not order from the restaurant. It is a complete rip off. They charge you 3 times more than buying elsewhere plus a transportation fee which is equivalent to a meal.

3. Nothing much to do other than to chill so one night is enough.

4. There was no hot water in the shower.

An idyllic backdrop; set between Lion Mountain & the Sea.
Cabins on a steep hillside. The mini swimming pool is set in a particularly scenic manner.
The stone wall, wooden gate, & security guards- keep intruders at bay.
If you plan to explore the surrounding area on foot; keep in mind that the small town below- has a LARGE population of large, highly agressive stray dogs. According to the majority Hindu culture of Mauritius- stray dogs are holy animals {thus cannot be put in pounds}.
A pack of these {presumptively wild} dogs completely blocked my path to le centre ville, for le shopping.
It took backing away slowly & calmly, to deter them from biting me.
The much bigger problem was the giant cockroach infestation, within both the smaller & larger cabins that I stayed in.
15 giant cockroaches- the first 24hrs alone {I sprayed, then counted the remnant number}. About half that- the second day.
The groundskeeper man {who doubles as housekeeper & maintainance staff} was initially nice enough to give me two rides {in the course of a week} to buy insecticide & groceries.
Transportation off the property- can otherwise be a serious challenge. If notified well enough in advance; the security man on duty at the entrance- can call guests a taxi.
Cordial relations with the groundsman {repair man, cleaning man, etc.} deteriorated; when he discovered that my combination of roach spray & pest powder, had caused discolouration to their precious imported black concrete floors.
The groundsman inferred that I may be forced to pay for new flooring.
That's when I got slightly irate.
It took days of arguing {by phone, mostly} with the off-site manager- to dissuade La Hacienda from making me pay for new flooring to be imported from South Africa.
It could have been a less stressful stay- had this pest control dispute not occurred.
At least the cabins were mostly quiet. I also liked the use of some locally sourced rustic decor.
Also be aware that the adjacent sugar cane fields are sometimes cleared by burning- as they were while I was a {paying} guest.
It could cause problems for anyone who's sensitive to smoke, or asthmatic.
There is a colourful array of exotic Mascarene birds, flying around the property.
I enjoyed getting aquainted with the four kindly giant tortoises roaming the clearing above the cabin area.
Higher up Lion Mountain, begins a rocky tropical forest, home to rare African wildlife, including a remnant population of Pteropus niger {a giant bat}.
Above the tortoise field, the mountain gets very steep- & is anyway posted not to tresspass.

My family and I stayed here in August 2013. We used it for a 3-night stopover on our way back from Madagascar and stayed in the 'Pink Pigeon' villa which is the site's only 2-bedroom accommodation. We have previously stayed in 5-star all-inclusive resorts on Mauritius but found them a little soulless. However, La Hacienda was just perfect. Situated halfway up Lion Mountain it is a green, quiet retreat with blissful views and the ideal place to relax. Having the Pink Pigeon villa meant that the site's only swimming pool was directly outside our accommodation so we could step from our balcony, down the steps and just spread out by the pool. Our 18-month old daughter loved sitting there and dangling her feet in the water. Every morning they deliver a breakfast basket, the contents of which you pre-order the night before. It's not a wildly extravagant breakfast but it suffices. The accommodation is wholly self-catering but you can order takeaway meals or (as we did) get a hire car and travel to local restaurants around Mahebourg and Blue Bay. The staff on-site (cleaner, handyman and security) were all excellent, friendly and helpful and clearly felt pride in this place and their jobs. Overall, an ideal quiet base on the prettier side of the Island where you can switch off, lose yourself in the views and indulge in a little reparation of the soul...

This Hotel is not well known to begin with... it's 20-25 min. drive from the Airport which is good for business travelers but again not too many people know of it as it is just 4 yrs old. That could be a challenge. The View is to die for... as it's on the Mountain. but then again you cannot think of going for a dip in the ocean. They do have a swimming pool though. The Food is one of the biggest cons. as they order it from a restaurant 20kms away and charge you for it as well which is Rs.300. a main course is approx Rs. 400 so be ready to pay Rs. 700 which they will round it to $ 27. They offer individual Villas with built in kitchen where you can shop and cook your own food, for a family or longer stay tourist its a good bet. Security wise, it's secure and the property boast of tortoises and great view which cannot be challenged. WiFi is free but the connection can drop. The TV has only few channels in English. Over all the hotel is good if you don't like going for a dip in the ocean and can cook yourself.

Firstly, my stay at LA Hacienda was in June 2012; however, I missed updating at that time. The hotel is located on a hill that makes it unique as most other hotels in Mauritius wound boast about their proximity to the beaches. The area chosen for the hotel/villas is very romantic and cozy. The villas also have a fabulous view of the bay area as well as the airport. If you stay at the villa, you will also get to meet an 150 year old turtle "Claudio." I hope I remember the name still. Some minor things the hotel could improve on: during my stay at the villa, we were the only couple in the entire property. No other villas were booked. At nights, the place can be a little lonely, scary. The villa can add more street lights. Overall, a must stay place is South Mauritius and not to forget the proximity to the airport. Hardly took 15 mins or so.

"Of the four available villas, Pink Pigeon is the largest (having two bedrooms). It is also situated higher up the mountain so overlooks the roof of the others which are all in a single line. The pool is also closer to (and just in front of) the Pink Pigeon villa which sort of makes it 'your' pool."
