I have stayed all over the world in many different settings and venues from 5 star to backpacker and have seen many different things in that time. I could understand what the other reviewers were seeing however the venue, staff and the owners were delightful. I stayed with my wife on a dinner bed and breakfast basis and found that the prices were very reasonable by local standards, let alone global. In addition the food was very tasty. It is not nouvelle cuisine, more like good home cooking. The staff were very friendly, well trained and did their best to assist us. I am a mountain biker and know the trails near waterval boven, so I spent some time riding in the area and can highly recommend the trails. In addition there are walks that I would recommend for the active types. For my wife there was a day spa and we both had a massage and found this to be great. We came back to our home in Jhb after three days at Bergwaters very nicely relaxed and would willingly go back. This is not a game lodge nor a 5 star bush retreat but as a getaway for a weekend or an overnight stop it is great. There is a spa, a pool and a bar and lots to do in waterval boven and surrounds if you go looking.

Me and my extended family spent three nights over Easter 2015 at the lodge. On arrival the lodge was well presented, clean and in a beautiful location. Unfortunately we were not greeted by the hosts as each car arrived but they accommodated an early check in which was appreciated. The rooms offer a comfortable king size bed, aircon, fridge and TV. While the bathrooms are dated, everything worked. The rooms were cleaned daily with a daily change of towels. We stayed on a DBB basis and while the price was competitive, this was evident in the food. Cooked breakfasts were oily, often undercooked and small. Lunches were ok and while dinners were generally better, there was room for more flavour and better portions especially for men. The lady who serves one in the restaurant was unpleasant and not very accomodating. She often sighed and moaned under her breath when a request was made like asking for olive oil or espressos. As a large family we often had to wait for food while half of us ate. It was felt that meals for larger groups should maybe be buffet style so one can have a family meal. The bar was pleasant and is honesty based. Drinks a bit on the expensive side, not too much variety and the fridge wasn't replenished during our stay. Perhaps guests should be asked upon booking what they prefer to drink to ensure sufficient stock. We loved the communal lounge area and the spa is superb. ..definitely recommend a full body massage. Chantal the owner was very accomodating of last minute spa bookings. The area offers beautiful walks and swims in natural rock pools. However be warned the mountain climb is challenging which was not advised on departure. As a family we enjoyed the weekend but felt the staff could have been more welcoming and friendly. This is an area which needs improvement as well as the food so that a good stay could be great.

My husband booked us for a weekend here and it was amazing. We are both nature lovers and absolutely loved it. They have quite a few things to do, like tennis, squash, table tennis, a hiking trail, a pool table, darts and a swimming pool. We preferred a "chill" weekend and just relaxed, went out to Waterval Onder to the Kruger Hof Museum, and took a drive to Waterval Boven, just because :) We booked a spa treatment for the both of us on the Sunday, and hated to have returned home. The STAFF are friendly and helpful. The lodge is also pet friendly and has 4 amazing dogs :) We will definitely return again! Thanks for a great stay!

After a long year we were hoping to have a relaxing hassle free holiday over December 2013. I regret to say that for the most part the stay was not worth the money or hassle driving on the dirt road to the lodge. On arrival we were greeted by one of the son's and shown to our unit.
The state of the unit was just not on par with the cost per person. Some lampshades didn't work, the main bathroom toilet was broken, the stove was not in proper working order and all in all the bathroom was just disgusting.
I approached the owner Chantel about the mould and peeling paint in the bathroom and she was astonished to hear of it. I wondered if she ever went into the unit as surely it shouldn't be a surprise to her. The toilet was fixed immediately and the stove over the next 2 days of our stay. Since we had booked months in advance one would of expected that to be ready before we arrived. The unit was so dirty. When the cleaning lady actually swept the floors the next day it was sickening to see what came from under the furniture. The unit is badly maintained if at all. The main bathroom has a shower head which apparently has never 'really' worked! You don't even want to brush your teeth in that basin. The bathroom in the main bedroom was just crazy. Don't dare going to the toilet after your shower as that gets wets along with the toilet paper. The bedroom walls need to be redone and since there are no skirting boards the dirt is all nicely packed between the wooden flooring and the walls.
The things that need to be attended to are just forgotten.
I am positive that if pictures off the self-catering unit were put on their site, no one would book.
Then during our stay we battled on numerous occasions to find someone to help us. Once when the dining room attendant eventually appeared, she was so sour and made me feel like I was disrupting her entire day! Between my kids and I we had to sort out the issues, find what we needed and even became the welcoming folk for new visitors as they could also not locate any staff to help them on arrival.
One night I walked down to the main lounge area only to be charged by one of the dogs and nipped in the leg. It is so dark around the corners and if that was one of my kids it could of been their faces that were bitten. I asked for my money to be refunded as we wanted to leave early. I was politely referred to their terms and conditions. After literally screaming at Ivan and pointing out all the resorts issues he agreed to refund one day of accommodation.
This place has so much potential and reading the old reviews it is clear to me that not much has changed. What an absolute pity!

We were looking for somewhere to stay following a mid-afternoon arrival in Johannesburg, on our way to the Kruger National Park and after a bit of searching around decided we liked the sound of Bergwaters.

The first thing to note is the location. The address is usually shown as Wateval Boven, but in truth the lodge is in a rural location some miles outside the town. Make sure you have decent directions before you set out because we ended up in the town centre after dark and needed to ‘phone through so that we could find the place. The final approach is up a fairly rough track that was no problem for our hire car to negotiate.

Initial impressions are important and Bergwaters scored highly on this account. Ernie, the owner, was outside to meet us when we arrived and greeted us warmly before escorting us to our rooms and telling us about meal times etc. We were staying on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis which is probably a good idea given the fact that there is a bar area next to the dining room, a decent selection of South African wines available to complement the food and the nearest alternatives are really not in walking distance.

We had reserved the honeymoon suite and we were delighted when we saw the rooms. Photographs won’t really do it justice but there was lots of space, a huge bed and a massive open fire (not needed during out stay but it could be lovely in cold weather). The bathroom was almost as big and contained a sunken bath that was almost irresistible.

We were in a hurry to dine because this was the night of the Rugby Union World Cup final – South Africa vs. England. This was no problem for them and we sat down to eat shortly after dropping our luggage off and quickly changing. By the time we’d chosen our wines, the starters had arrived and we reached the end of the main course just as the national anthems were being played. Ernie asked us what we wanted to do about pudding (apple crumble with custard!) and when we said we really had to watch the match he said it was no problem and we could have dessert at half time!

I won’t dwell on the match except to say that we could hardly have watched our team lose in better company.

In the morning we spent some time wandering around the very pretty grounds and along the road, to admire the upland scenery and listen to the barking of baboons before enjoying a marvellous al fresco breakfast. Our only complaint was that it was then time to leave and we all agreed that we would have liked to have stayed another night.

I have no hesitation in recommending Bergwaters but if, like us, you’re using it as a stop off point then you should definitely consider more than one day there.

We found Bergwater online and booked a long weekend break to get away from the city. We found a little piece of heavan instead. Bergwater is ideally located 2.5 hours from Gauteng. We were very well looked after by Ivan and were made to feel at home straight away. The self catering cottage has all the amenities of home and although there were other guests, we felt like we were all alone with just the babbling river and singing birds (including two beautiful peacocks!) for company.

The hike up the mountain gave us a great work out and great views of the area. And being dog lovers, we felt as if we'd been adopted by the lodges 4 loveable dogs who obviously love the attention.

We will definitely be making a return visit and we didn't actually want to leave when we had to. Bergwater is a fabulous home from home and we would recommend it to anyone!

On Friday May 16 we arrived at Bergwaters to be met by Ivan the owner and host. We were shown around the very charming and solitude inspiring lodge and to our well appointed room complete with romantic turndown and bottle of sparkling wine. This was to be the beginning of what can only be described as a truly blissfull weekend. We ate a 3 course dinner in the restaurant the food is excellent and cooked to perfection. The following day we had booked a half day spa treatment and this is where Bliss is too small a word to describe what followed. I chose Chantel as my Therapist while my fiance chose Ivan. Both of the therapists conducted the most amazing full body massage we have ever experienced leaving us on cloud 9. A revitalizing facial followed the massage and my face felt awesome when Chantel was finished. In fact we felt so good we booked another massage the following day.
As someone that travels regularly and works in the industry I must say that I have never received such an excellent and professional massage nor been hosted so unobtrusively. The staff were friendly, food excellent and management of Bergwaters was excellent. And the therapies were unsurpassed.... I will definitely be back !!!!

Our stay at Bergwaters was a bit of an up-and-down experience. Our initial contact with Ivan was great and he really went the extra mile to accommodate us and slot us in during our requested dates.

I must admit, however, our first impressions of the property upon arrival weren't that great. In order to access Bergwaters, you have to drive over and along a train track and past some other decrepit buildings and houses, which kind of ruins the whole "middle-of-the-bush" feeling.

The premises itself is well maintained and welcoming. The gardens are quite nice and the buildings look well kept. There are tennis courts, squash courts and a pool, though they are all a bit awkardly placed (the pool is right by reception for instance). The hiking trail is stunning and very rewarding, though a bit run-down and actually slightly dangerous at times. I would not recommend attempting it without at least a decent pair of hiking boots and a fair level of fitness.

We stayed in the self-catering cottage, which is nice enough inside with all the necessary amenities, including air conditioning and DSTV. The cottage was cleaned every day as well, which was quite a nice surprise for a self-catering unit. Only issue was it was placed literally right in the entrance of the lodge and, this being South Africa, felt a bit unsafe (though it must be said that the entire premises is kitted out with motion sensor beams and alarm systems).

The biggest fault with Bergwaters is that they downplay their best assets. The self catering would have had amazing views of the mountain, if it weren't entirely blocked by the squash court. From the stoep you would have had relaxing views of the river/stream, but there is a dense row of trees right in front of you (a deck would have been lovely). Behind the cottage lies a heap of rubble and old trailers. Little things like this constantly ruined the feeling of being at a lodge in the bush.

We also attempted lunch at the restaurant one day, but there was no-one there to help us. After eventually finding someone, she was actually quite rude and didn't really do much in the way of making us feel welcome. We were literally the only people there at 1pm, and she didn't even bother setting a table or even bringing us cutlery or glasses when we asked to sit outside. I'm usually very patient at restaurants, but we finally left when they didn't have half the items on the menu in stock (including red wine and chicken). To his credit though, Ivan checked up on us later the day, apologised and offered us a bottle of wine on the house (which we shared with him at the bar) to make up for the inconvenience.

Overall we didn't have a bad stay at Bergwaters. We had everything we needed and the place is well maintained and clean. But they could be so much better if they focused on getting the basics right and play to their strengths...

To treat ourselves a little recreation - after a week Kruger - my wife and I booked a for 4 days stay in the Bergwaters Lodge. The reception was very friendly. The staff overall was attentive.
The food (morning and evening) was always good. The prices are acceptable. We had booked several treatments. All were good to very good (given by Ivan and Chantel). For safety ensure they had adequate lighting and extensive motion detector. The location of the lodge is great. Just the thing to relax. We can only recommend Bergwaters.

We had booked in for the night on our way to JHB. At around midnight three armed men, wearing balaclavas entered into our room and robbed us using extreme force, of all our valuables. The leader ripped all my jewelry off my arms whilst pointing a gun at my head.
After the attack we managed to wake the owner who contacted the police. When I asked the owner where his security guards were, his answer was "we do not have security". I asked why and he said that the previous owner had not had an attack in the last 16 years. He ALSO said that the attacks had started recently at the resorts in the area - then why did he not see to security??
Everyone, please do not risk your lives by staying at Bergwaters Eco Lodge. We were lucky to get away with ours.

Response from bergwaters, Owner at Bergwaters Lodge
Responded 11 Feb 2014
Understandably Emmy H is very upset about what happened to her, as are we. I do however believe that some of the facts have been omitted and some distorted in Emmy's review. First, Emmy fails to highlight the fact that there was NO FORCED ENTRY, i.e the locks and latches provided where not used, and valuables were not safely stowed away or locked in the safe available at reception. Had this been the case the incident, I am certain, would have been very different. Second, according to the statement made to the police, NO fire arms were presented by the intruders. Third, it was the police that indicted that there had been similar incidents in the area, not I. Bergwaters has been in existence for more than 35 years, and this is the first incident of this nature - ever. There was no reason to believe that we or our guest were in imminent danger. Needless to say, we have since installed early warning devices to raise the alarm in the event of an intruder. I have also started to check that guests are using the locks and latches provided. Interestingly, during an inspection just before mid night this last weekend, I had to awaken one of our guests to ask them to please lock their doors. Guests need to understand that considering prevailing crime in our country, it is just as much their responsibility to ensure their safety by at least locking doors while occupying the room especially at night, and to make certain valuables are locked away. I would implore you the reviewer to please note that Emmy H is not try to provide objective information to you as the prospective guest. Clearly this review is aimed at discrediting us and damaging our business, and a vent for her anger, making out we are the guilty part here, where as in fact we are just as much the victim.
