We were a family of 10 enjoying three full days at Amakhosi. We had a really good experience. We went on several game drives, and we saw so many animals and birds, including all the Big Five. We will treasure the memories from the sun sets, night sky and close meetings with all the animals. Now we have a hard time dealing with all the photos we took. We just couldn't stop taking pictures! The whole experience was a true adventure for the children (aged 9-15).
We had Phillip as our driver and Jeremy as tracker and we were impressed by their skills in finding the animals we wanted to see. It was fun to observe how they work. They also took good care of us, providing us with blankets, hot water bottles (it was really cold in the early mornings and evenings!!), and by serving us drinks and snacks.
Every time we came back to the lodge we were welcomed back by Sam and other staff members, with warm hand towels and drinks. At night, there were also two bunfires in front of the entrance, which gave a nice atmosphere (and an opportunity to feel warm again).

The food was amazing! No meal was the same. We got a new breakfast menu every morning, in addition to the usual breakfast buffet. "High-tea" which was a buffet of wonderful snacks, sandwiches, and sweets, also included something for everyone. One High-tea was served in "the bush" on a look out, and that was really wonderful. For dinner we could choose between two starters, two main courses and two desserts. Both the children and adults found something they liked. The children could also get maccaroni or other "child-friendly" meals, if htye wanted. The service was excellent.
One night we were also invited for a surprise performance of zulu dancers before our dinner. They were excellent! We enjoyed their show a lot.

On the negative side, it seemed like it was difficult for the staff to get used to that we had two children in one of the lodges so that we lived four people there. We had to ask for two extra towels many times. We also asked for the slippers and bath robes for the kids (it was really cold!), but we never got that. We also had a problem with too little hot water for all of us to have a warm shower. We wanted to use the large and nice bath tub, but there wasn't enough hot water to fill it up.
We came in the winter, so we brought warm clothes. But we did not expect that it would be so cold inside the lodges, so we wish we had brought more clothes. The lodges are built to keep people cool in the summer, so I guess that is why it is nearly impossible to heat them. Getting up in the morning at 5am when it was almost freezing, was really hard and unpleasant. One night they served us dinner outside, and we found that quite uncomfortable. It was so cold, that we did not enjoy the food at all. We just wanted to finish eating and go to our beds. A pity, when the food is so nice!
I guess these problems with the cold is just relevant for a couple of weeks each year, so I can understand that it may not be worthwhile to do anything about it. But people coming in the winter should bring their wool along! And it may be worthwhile considering doing some of the game drives in the middle of the day, rather than in the morning. We did that once, and it was much more pleasant. We also saw a lot of animals on this drive.

Hi Colin and I visited Amikhosi for 2 nights in October. We had the most amazing time there and couldn’t fault anything. From the moment we were greeted at the security gate it felt like you were part of a lovely family. A the staff were just so friendly and helpful.
Our ranger Pierre just made the safari such fun. He had an incredible knowledge of not just the animals but the trees and birds too. He went out of his way to make sure we had a good time.

The food was excellent with a brilliant four course meal at dinner.

Our lodge was superb with a really comfy bed and lovely powerful shower.

We just wish we could have stayed a couple more nights.

We spent 3 nights at the Amakhosi Lodge and our visit was nothing short of spectacular. We loved our morning and evening game drives with Rowan and King! They were extremely knowledgeable, patient, and would go to great lengths to ensure we were enjoying our time. The meals were all 5 stars and we loved the barbecue one night were the staff sang around the fire-pit. The spa, rooms, lodge, and grounds were very clean and well maintained. The staff even left little evening treats in the room with turn down.

HIGHLY recommend!

There are just too many special touches to name them all so all I can recommend is that you visit yourself and enjoy them. My wife and I were treated like VIPs at Amakhosi. We've been to a few safari lodges in the past and we had the best elephant and lion sightings that we'd ever seen at Amakhosi.

We spent 5 days at Amakhosi as the second part of our honeymoon, two weeks ago. We can't recommend it enough. Each day has two game drives on the reserve where you are driven about in an open-top landcruiser by a ranger and spotter. On our very first trip we saw hippos. We saw the big five in the first two days, and most other guests commented that five days is a long safari. You could probably get the best out of things in three or four, assuming the weather plays nice, but seeing such charismatic animals up close did not get boring, and if it rains the animals are less likely to be out. One drive was rained off during our stay, but such things are in the hands of the guests - we could have gone out if we had wanted. It was quite nice to have that morning off as you will have to be up at 0530. The animals are active at that time.

It shouldn't be underestimated how close the animals are. This is truly magical. But you always feel safe. The staff, as well as being friendly, are very experienced and have an almost tangible love for the animals there.

Our ranger, Pierre, and spotter, King, were superb. Their knowledge of the animals, not just the big ones, but also the birds and flora, was encyclopedic, and it is obvious they really love their jobs. They knew where to take us to get the best spots, including a leopard. This, we are given to understand, was rare. We were recommended Amakhosi by a friend who has been on about 10 safaris and said this was the best.

Particularly magical was the herd of elephants we saw up close. The accommodation is made up of eight chalets which are self-contained, quiet, clean and have everything you need. Special touches included fizz for us honeymooners, chocolates and plenty of snacks in the room. Everything except booze and minibar snacks was included, and the local beer and wine was excellent and good value.

The quality of the food cannot be overstated. We live in London and we are used to eating well, and this is probably the best we have eaten on holiday. Because the reserve is small, the dinner menu is set. But there are four superb courses. Examples: rack of lamb, chicken ballotine, local soups, crab gnocchi. Lunch is buffet-style finger food such as tarts and sandwiches. All home made, all delicious. If you care about presentation and service, you will not be disappointed. We never ate the same thing twice.

On the last day be were treated to a braai, or South African barbecue, out in the bush. Grilled kudu, sausage, cheese toasties and plenty of local beer, gin and tonic, wine.

The setting of the spa is stunning. We went on the rainy day for a nice relaxing massage.

Some of the best things were the small touches: a hot water bottle and blanket for the morning drive when it's chilly, plus water and insect repellent. The stops at sunrise and sunset for a drink and snack. Worth trying: the mixture of coffee, hot chocolate and Amarula served up in the morning. Delicious enough to be habit-forming.

The staff were lovely and took care of everything. Special thanks to Sonja for helping us book direct and answering all our questions as first timers on safari and to Lindo for driving us to and from Durban airport, which is a four-hour transfer on good roads. Plus, of course, Pierre and King, who tolerated our endless questions and picture-taking for six hours a day.

In summary, book this now. This was a magical experience from beginning to end. We are British and we don't gush lightly! After a week on the beach, this was the perfect second half to a honeymoon. Thanks to all the staff, including the chefs, waiters, cleaners and everyone else.

Tips: It's cold early morning in the South African winter. Take a decent woolly jumper or padded jacket. Have a nap between the two drives. Do a bush walk to see the smaller wildlife and learn about the local flora. Ask for Pierre and King. Bin the diet.

Superb 11,000 hectare private game park. Sadly we could only stay for one night. Food was delightful, staff was super friendly, got up close with all the animals (big 5 all present tho only one leopard so don’t get your hopes up there..!) Would definitely highly recommend. Only tip would be if you want any spa treatment to book that in ahead of your arrival as when we were there there was no availability (which was slightly odd as we were the only ones staying there our night!)

Thank you so much for your awesome review and thank you for posting it even if it was one night, we are so happy that in the short stay we managed to give you some good memories. With regards to the leopards, we have been monitoring them and we do in fact have quite a few, but yes they are elusive and we cannot guarantee sightings and I even rely on guests pictures to in fact believe they are there! With regards to the SPA, due to unforeseen circumstances we were unable to assist during your stay and this matter is been handled internally and we thank you for bringing it to our attention. We certainly hope that next time you are in our area you come back and visit and enjoy more sightings and some pampering. Fond Regards The Amakhosi team

An absolutely unforgettable family holiday, I couldn't fault a second of it. Staff were so welcoming and helpful and the Villa was lovely and immaculately clean and comfortable. The private game drives were the highlight of our holiday, Pierre and Zackilli were brilliant, friendly, very knowledgable and so patient with our 2 children who were enjoying their first safari experience. We made some great memories on this trip and saw some truly spectacular landscapes and got up close to all the magnificent animals.

The food was delicious, breakfast and afternoon tea and fine dining dinners - Yum! And my South African husband loved the braii night. The spa treatments were lovely too - I wish I'd booked more!

Would highly recommend this lodge to everyone from couples to groups and small families like ours. Thank you to all the staff that made our trip so wonderful.

Tucked away just outside of Pongola is the authentically African Amakhosi Safari Lodge. Cold towels and a fresh juice upon arrival were happily welcomed as the sun and heat favour Amakhosi. The entrance into the lodge brings with it an earthy feel. As one walks out onto the deck, the view of the Mkuze River is a sight to behold, and eating out on the deck at night, with such a spectacular view is a treat.

The room I stayed in was the River Suite. The hammock was one of my favourite touches. Reading a book and listening to the flowing Mkuze river is relaxing and unwinds a busy mind. The bed has a net on it which keeps out the mosquitoes. Comfort is an understatement… The bed is so comfortable with snug fluffy pillows that promise a great night’s sleep. There is a lounge area with a well-stocked mini-bar and tea and coffee making facilities. The shower is very spacious and there is also an outdoor shower for the more adventurous. The rooms are so well decorated with African art and are well lit with the high glass doors and windows, allowing panoramic views.

There is no comparable feeling quite as exhilarating as watching a cheetah racing, and then hearing their adorable call. It’s quite difficult to watch them without affection after hearing that precious and delicate call. Then to the other extreme, a male lion roaring for his pride to join him, while parked a safe distance away, vibrating the entire valley with the resounding echo.

I was lucky enough to witness a baby elephant trying to use his trunk… cute doesn’t even begin to describe it! While I would dare to call a baby elephant cute, a full grown one on the other hand is nothing short of magnificent. The strength in their trunks embodies the strength of the beautiful giants.

The ultimate show in luxury was stopping at the top of one of the many hills, and viewing the landscape from above whilst sipping a crisp South African wine and snacking on biltong, crisps and nuts. It’s a lovely break during the game drive and also a chance to take in the splendour of the game farm. The game ranger and tracker were knowledgeable, well-trained and experts in their field, providing a great feeling of safety.

What would a 5* game reserve be like without mouth-watering decadence? I am personally a lover of cheese, and there was what seemed like a never ending supply of exotic cheeses, as well as succulent fruit, delicious pastries and cakes. For the fish lovers, salmon is a lovely touch with the morning breakfast, something I enjoyed. The four course dinner left my belly full and my appetite pleased. Not only was the food excellent, but so was the service. The service is anticipatory. By the end of the first night, the barman knew what I wanted to drink, as well as that I had a taste for biltong and provided me with a little biltong snack.

I splurged a little and decided to be pampered with a heavenly massage. To feel the stresses of everyday life slowly melt away while having my shoulders and neck massaged, brought along with it my surrender to bliss and relaxation.

The absolute highlight of my stay at Amakhosi, as if seeing so much wildlife and having an abundance of cheese wasn’t enough, was getting engaged. The location is so incredibly beautiful that it is the perfect place for a romantic weekend.

Very Nice Lodge situated in a private game reserve. We had a beautiful suite with a stunning river view. We could see hippo's from our balcony! Diner was great! Consisting of a 3 course menu the first evening and a buffet the Next day. Great place to talk to People also staying in the Lodge as it is quite small. The game drives were also great! Because of the small size of the reserve we were able to see a lot of animals, Elephant Came as close as 1 meter to our jeep, Truly amazing! Our Ranger and tracker were excellent at following the animal tracks.
