We stayed 5 nights at Macaw Bank. The rustic accommodation is quite simple, with some cabanas set in the forest, and ours (toucan) set on the edge of their large, natural, wonderful garden with the forest and river at our back - we were happy with toucan. The lodge is run by Raoul and Lettie, and they are excellent hosts. All food is freshly prepared at the lodge, from local ingredients “home style”, we enjoyed the food. On arrival we walked down to the river searching for birds, but mid-afternoon is not the best time and we were disappointed- however around 6 pm I saw a large bird fly into the tree opposite- our cabana had live up to its name- a keel billed toucan- we had truly arrived. We had met Raoul 4 years earlier at Chan Chich, and new that we were in the hands of a birding expert- and so took the opportunity for 3 early morning bird walks- and breakfast itself was typically accompanied by toucans (arracaris and keel billed) in the nearby tree. We spent one most enjoyable day simply in the garden, and we would strongly recommend two activities- the horse riding to Xunantanich was delightful, as was the trip to swim in the waterfall pools on Mountain Pine Ridge. One comment about Belize- this is truly a hidden gem- low key tourism (no high rise)- the world’s second largest barrier reef, the rain forest, wonderful birds, great climate- highly recommended.

This is a beautiful place. About a 4 acre clearing in the jungle spotted with paths, hammocks and trees. Trails lead to the nearby river; a secret garden) and about 6 comfortable cabanas nestled in the jungle. Everything is in good repair and excellent condition. We found the hosts (Letty and Raul) super accommodating and friendly. They arranged our trips, gave us good advice, were enjoyable to spend time with, and were particularly good cooks - we thought better than typical. There's no menu - you tell them your restrictions (vegetarian, gluten-free, no cilantro, whatever) and they make something wonderful. If you like birding-they have multiple habitats - jungle, river and a huge open field a short walk away. Most places I'd think have similar access. But Macaw Bank has Raul. He's an expert and avid birder who's been birding in various parts of Belize for decades - top level visual and auditory skills; comprehensive knowledge of the habitat and habits of the birds of the area; has a great scope. We did easy bird walks each morning at 6:30 am (the fee is something like $10/person) and saw lots-especially toucans. The MO for this area is you stay at a resort like this and then go off on day trips. Everything is a bit of a drive but it felt easy. We did zip lining, the ATM cave (truly epic- I was skeptical but this is totally worth it), horseback riding and mayan ruins; swam in a waterfall. If you're looking to stay in the area, this is a great option.

Thank you for taking your time to write the review. We indeed have a lot of birds and are very lucky to have Raul. Our property is on total of 50 acres of land, most of which is covered with rain forest. I am glad that you enjoy your stay. I am looking forward to your coming again.

One of the best places my sister and I stayed on our trip to Belize. Letty and Raul are the property managers and they go above and beyond for their guest. They can help you with recommendations and set up tours-> our favorite was a horse back riding. Raul is an expert bird watcher and you can go out with him in the morning for bird watching. The property is beautiful, tucked away in the jungle about 20 minutes from San Ignacio (it is a bumpy road to get there.) We saw a variety of birds including toucans and there are multiple hiking trails on site. The food here is absolutely delicious! Worth the $$$. We had breakfast and dinner on site everyday and every meal was a treat. We stayed for 3 nights and wished we stayed for a few more. You will love it here.

I stayed at the Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge in late January. My accommodation was extremely comfortable and quiet except for the sounds of the surrounding jungle. No TV and no air conditioning, but the overhead fan was enough when I needed it. There was wifi near the main office. Raul and Leticia are exceptional hosts and helped to make my stay very enjoyable. Both are extremely knowledgeable about the plants, birds and other wildlife of the area. Raul did the cooking while I was there, and the food was fantastic. The road for the last 3 miles is very bad, but my rental SUV had no problems, probably because it never rained during the time I was there. If there had been rain, I would have needed a 4-wheel drive.

We spent five days here birding both on the 50 acre property and elsewhere but nowhere was as good as right by the river. We picked up nearly 50 species just in the first 3 hours of the morning. Keel-bilked Toucans, Green and Brown Jays, Collared Aracaris. Pygmy kingfishers, Yellow Tailed and Baltimore Orioles, and lots of our warblers were on vacation here too. Get Raoul, the manager to bird with you and you’ll see 5 times as much as you will on your own. Then eat breakfast and dinner there which he and Leti source from their garden and they were the best meals we had in Belize

Thank you for your review. We do have many species of birds on the grounds of the lodge and I am happy you had good time birding. We are now planting more and more different verities of fruit trees and birds love them so we expect that that number of birds will be steadily increasing. We are looking forward to seeing you again visiting our lodge.
