This resort is stunning. Such a magical place they have created. Located just a short walk outside the main hub of Tamarindo, it was a beautiful experience to stay here. The staff was simply incredible. Their hospitality goes above and beyond. While there for a retreat, they cooked us some of the most amazing food. You could tell it was made with passion and love. The facility itself is phenomenal as well. There is a pathway taking you right down to the ocean. You have your own pool in your villas as well as on the main property. It is a stunning oasis and wonderful place to disconnect from the outside world and connect to self. I highly recommend Cala Luna!!

Warning ⚠️ I know this is hard to read But its important to read to prepare yourself for what is possible when traveling to this place. I have been all over the world 100’s if not thousands of places. Never once wrote a bad review on a hotel. I never expected the horror of the stay that was about to ensue. My family owned a travel agency for 20 years, literally thousands of trips with zero problems, and if there was a small problem the hotels provided amazing service. So here we go... I booked a 5 star resort assuming the safety of our family (spoiler alert 🚨 wrooonngg). Our first night there the next door neighbors were loud and drunk. But I didn’t complain. I just figured, hey its part of vacation. (Big mistake not complaining. You will see later). Day 2 daytime: We wake up 7 am next morning, breakfast, out by pool. Didn’t even think about tue bight before. Day2 night time . We go to sleep around 8 cause we are on NY time. My whole family is asleep, my 2 little kids, my wife, and I. Tucked away, sound asleep. An hour later I wake abruptly to the woman next door in the adjoining room attacking our door. Trying to break it in. Swearing, kicking, and punching our door yelling at us. You F@cking buta mothf@ckers, if you wake me at 7 am m, im gonna come in there and kill all of you . Followed by 5 minutes of yelling and banging at my door, hearing multiple assailants on the other side of the door. I am totally terrified (im not gonna lie) that someone literally just tried to invade room and fight us in the middle of the night. I don’t know if I should leave and get help or stay and protect my family. I dont know how many people are on the other side of that door. I heard 2, 3, maybe 4 I think. If she breaks through I have to fight her and her partners gonna join in?? I’m so amped up to now defend us against 3-4 people. My heart is beating like a mac truck engine out of my chest. Have I trained enough to prepare me to handle 3-4 people or will my little kids watch me get pummeled? It gets silent, I think they may have left for a minute or two. I run to the front desk. The “hotel manager” is there Donovan. I complain profusely to him. He says, “ok I will absolutely take care of it” what happened to you is outrageous. He says, yes I saw her leave a few minutes ago and she was very very drunk. He says “she is checking out tomorrow” so I won’t necessarily kick her out depending on how she acts. Bit is 100% leaving tomorrow am. He assures me 1000% he will take care of it and she will not bother is again (which was a lie) and will be safe (another lie). I go back to my room thinking Donovan will take care of it. My whole family is asleep, I am still ramped into survival mode, crawling the walls on my one vacation in 4 years for the second night in a row. Ring Ring its Donvan, I think hes gonna say he handled it. Nope, apparently this hotel is okay with punishing the people who survived the invasion by moving them out of their room. Yup, i just said it. Moving us out of OUR ROOM. They now want us to move rooms for the night. So now, I literally am walking in a foreign country, at night, holding my daughter in my arms, leaving our room and our belongings for a flight to safety. The next day we return to our room, Donovan assured me she was leaving/checking out the next day. So we went back to our old room. I go to the front desk at 5 PM the next day cause I was out from early am tour. I asked to talk to the hotel owner, general manager, Donovan in says is everything ok? Like my family just hadn’t been attacked in the middle of the night the day before. Literally, like nothing had happened. I say no its not ok. He says did she bother you again?? Wait ... WHATTTT??? I thought she was gone?? Donovan blatantly lied to me. We were back in our room because we were told they were leaving. My kids and family are still around the dangerous individuals from the night before who endangered my family and didn’t tell us. I immediately call him on it. He says “oh she said she wouldn’t do it again” and I warned her. I said, “Excuse me???? wait a second, she assaults our space trying to break in and hurt us. Now I have to sleep next to her again?? “ Donovan acts like my attack was no big deal and says “oh if she does it AGAIN she will be out”. She was drunk. I say, bro I don’t care if she was on drugs, drunk, or what ever. A physical assault that is totally unwarranted on us is totally unacceptable. She is a grown adult and has to be accountable for her actions. Especially when their is little kids involved. At this point I feel like im living in an alternate universe at this hotel. A hotels number job is to make sure we can sleep at night without fear of impeding death. God forbid something ever does happen. It is their duty to protect its guests. I asked the manager to make this right, i want to be moved, and they need to at MINIMUM pay for our stay and the hotel and our food. Really they should of gone over and beyond to make it right. I am mortified for the owners of this hotel at this point. I basically begged and plead to talk to the GM or owners 3 different times now. Donovan comes back to me says he talked to management (so basically I won’t get to talk to them) he can not upgrade me (because they are full), but he will NOT (that’s right NOT) refund our trip money, and but will offer me $250 credit (Which at the end of the trip I tried to deny, out of pure ethics of the insult. They insisted on not taking it off my bill because it was already been applied.) I literally laughed at him right in his face at the thought of buying us off with a $250 credit. This is a joke right. My trip has totally been traumatized. I can barely stand to be in this place at all. I am fumed to the MAX at this point. What Cala Luna did do for us at that point uproot my family (again), stick us in a room with no internet (one spot on the left bed had internet) , one broken faucet, and one clogged sink. Wait... let me call to tell them to tell them... nope phones broken too. All of Which I reported to the manager and nothing got fixed (of course). Apparently, this hotel has ZERO care for the safety of its guests (despite the armed guard up front) and even less care for the right thing to do. Absolutely zero stars for this hotel and the way the atrocious attack on my family was handled by management. If I was the owner I would be mortified and dismantled at the carelessness of which this was handled. Lastly, my son was in the tile pool and stepped on something and got about a 1/2 -1 inch cut along the bottom of his foot. I asked for a 1st aid kit. Donovan said “oh we don’t have one. Except in human resources which is closed.” Lol, what???? Im begging the universe please, please, make this stop at this point. The lessons that we need to spread is if you are going on a trip please send these things to a friend relative or someone in case this crazy person get into your room and you go missing: 1. Always share your location with family 2. Make sure your family was you travel itinerary 3. Make sure a current photo of everyone involved 4. If an innocent occurs tell someone or call the police not the hotel staff. 5. Make sure you know your exits, possible weapons in your hotel room incase you need to defend yourselves. 6. Make sure your hotel has a first aid kit. I know, i know you would think it would be common sense. 7. Lastly, if there is a problem complain the very first time. Not when your life is in danger. Because often even if your life is in danger third world hotels , lie, manipulate, and will risk your life for the cost of your stay. They care about you less than you can imagine. PLEASE SHARE THIS. share it to educate people on what you need to do and should be doing to help protect your kids. I surely wish someone had let me read about preparing for the worst in an abroad situation. Lastly, if anything share this to tell hotel managers like Donovan and hotels like Cala Luna we do not accept treatment like this. You do not punish victims and you surely don’t let the attackers stay un punished. Hotels wanna mess around and find out?? Well the internet is about to show you. For all the hotel non management workers reading this at cala luna you are amazing. Your work does not reflect on bad management. Both Allegra and I worked at a hotel for years. We actually even started dating at while working for one. We never, ever, would imagine treating a guest like this. I am sorry that this kind of treatment even exists to reflect on you. God bless you all and stay safe. This is a real life account of what happened. We realize this is only one side of the coin. We love love loved costa rica and its people, pura vida. Regardless of that, these are the facts, and our view of the events that occurred at our specific hotel.

Our travel agent recommended this place and though it wasn't right in the downtown area of Tamarindo - we loved it! It was more quiet, but there were other families there so we never felt like we had to be super quiet. Our family of five (2 adults, 13, 12 & 7 yrs old) spent four nights in a 3 bedroom villa - and it was fantastic! The villa was huge, had a kitchen, private pool and every bedroom had their own air conditioner and bedroom. Our villa was very near the front desk and restaurants, so we felt comfortable letting our older children go back and forth between the villa and pool. The grounds were very green, especially for dry season in Tamarindo. We walked into town several times, by beach and road, and both were manageable (if the tide cooperated). However, the front desk could arrange a taxi for $5/each way very quickly. The staff was fantastic, remembering our names and drink orders. Our breakfasts were included daily, and they were terrific, with freshly squeezed juice and cut fruit, along with a choice of several full plated meals. The pina coladas, lemonade, salads/veggies were all SO FRESH! They use all locally grown fruits and veggies, all organic, and you can certainly taste the freshness. We tried several different dishes off their menu, and none of them disappointed us. But one day stood out amongst the rest - the day we went fishing and brought back grouper. We asked the chef to prepare it a couple of ways and they served us up our favorite meal of the week - a huge family style meal with mashed potatoes, salad, grilled veggies, fries for our kids and the fresh fish! All of the staff speaks pretty good English (and we tried to use our Spanish as we could - which they all appreciated). The beaches were a short walk past the pool, and offered fantastic views of the sunset. They are not necessarily swimmable beaches, in my opinion. They have a lot of rock formations, making water shoes a must if you want to walk over them and into the water. However, there is sand to lay out on, or just walk around. Swimmable beaches are about 10 minute walk towards Tamarindo. My only feedback for the staff would be to offer assistance with bags for guests. In order to get to our villas, we had to walk on a short gravel road and driveway, which made it difficult to pull our rolling bags. In addition, the ants are a bit of nuisance. Of course, we were there during dry season - so I know they are looking for water, plus the grounds are lush, and bugs like flowers and greenery. We asked about it when we checked out, but they said their pest service is all organic too, so it probably isn't strong enough to kill them all. It didn't affect our overall opinion of the place, but thought I would share. Would definitely stay here again, and highly recommend for families and couples.

Costa Rica is an amazing place to visit. We really like the Tamarindo area. Casa Luna is a nice place to stay. The location is great and an easy walk or cab ride into town. the hotel is also within steps of the beach. Breakfast was included and excellent. The service was good, but not great. I'm hoping it was just because they are short staffed. We tried calling the front desk 3-4 times and no one was there to answer. The rooms were very nice and clean. Water pressure and hot water was an issue as you could never have a full shower with hot water, it was mostly luke warm. They have a beautiful pool and some small walking paths. It was easy to work remotely from here. Plenty of outlets to plug into. While I would stay there again, I hope that when things return to the new normal, there is more staff to assist. When you could find someone, they were very attentive.
