A safari experience has been on mine and my wife's bucket list and we had the truly unforgettable visit to Lalibela (Lentaba Lodge).
We arrived in the gates of the reserve to be greeted by the reception staff who's mood immediately told us the experience would be some special. They were bubbly and full of charm and gave us a brief idea of what to expect during our stay.
The hilarious and colourful character that is Elvis transferred us the 20 minute drive from the gate to Lentaba Lodge stopping plenty of times to allow us to take pictures and view some of the animals roaming the grounds.
From the minute we arrived at Lentaba Lodge we knew it was going to be an amazing stay. We were welcomed with hot towels and a hot drink (which happens after every game drive also) and the staff were on hand to again explain the happenings of the next few days and bring our bags to the room.
We were very surprised to arrive at our room and find a beautiful bottle of Champagne and some chocolates to celebrate our honeymoon and it was such a thoughtful touch.
The meals are served in a buffet format and I genuinely can't do the food justice. It's fresh, tasty and plentiful and with 3 meals a day not to mention complimentary snacks and coffee, you certainly won't go hungry. Also, it's completely impossible to single out one staff member from the lodge as each and every one of them are a credit to the place. They are so helpful and caring and nothing was too much to ask.
The lodge itself offers rolling views of the hills surrounding the reserve and there are some fantastic viewing points that look down on a watering hole to catch a glimpse of some of the roaming animals.
The main event of course was the game drives. Two morning and two evening ones. Whilst aware that there are many protected species on the reserve, the thing that should be most protected in Lalibela was our ranger, Brian. There are no words to do this man justice. His incredibly vast wealth of knowledge is astounding. And his insistence on trying to find the illusive animals on the reserve is fascinating. When it seemed for all the world that we'd not get to see a cheetah, Brian using his expert knowledge followed pawprints, used his instinct and despite the drive having supposed to have finished 45 minutes earlier, found the animal.
What made the experience with Brian even more special was his genuine enthusiasm and delight and finding and seeing certain animals despite no doubt having seen them before. Be it Lions, Cheetahs, Elephants and whatever else, Brian found them. And we were delighted to be there when he spotted a particular bird for the first time. We loved hearing about his passion for the animals from his upbringing and we were sad to say goodbye.
We got to share a coffee on the reserve in the presence of giraffes and had sundowners while gazing at Zebras, it was a truly memorable experience that we will never ever forget. And we are so glad it was at Lalibela.

Dear Conor, Wow! Thank you for your amazing and detailed review of Lalibela Game Reserve! We are thrilled to hear that you had a wonderful experience at Lalibela. Lalibela is home to several species of animals in vast numbers so it is not uncommon to start your unofficial game drive while you are being transferred from reception to the lodge. Game viewing really does start from the minute you arrive! We are so glad to know that you enjoyed your special surprise of sparkling wine and chocolates on arrival. Thank you for choosing Lalibela as a destination for your Honeymoon celebration. So many of our guests compliment the food. There really is so much on offer, so we can only imagine how hard it must be to not want to try each and every dish on offer. One thing is for sure, you will never go hungry at Lalibela! Brain is a fantastic guide and loves to go out of his way to ensure that our guests expectations are met. We are so happy to hear that you managed to have a sighting of a cheetah and that Brain was able to track this animal and surprise you with a wonderful sighting. It is not everyday that you get to enjoy a morning coffee or afternoon sundowner overlooking the beautiful landscapes of Lalibela in the presence of wildlife so we are delighted to hear that you were able to experience these wonderful and memorable moments. We hope to welcome you back to Lalibela in the not too distant future. Kind regards, The Lalibela Team

We had the pleasure of staying in the Kichaka Lodge for 3 Nights. From the moment we passed the gateway upto the moment when we had to leave this beautiful place, I can only say WOW, WOW, WOW!! The welcome we received, first by the main gate by Sam, then by our Guide Nathan and by Nono at the main Lodge was warm-hearted and so friendly. We felt at home straight away. The Lodge is stunning and our Suite was absolutely beautiful. Brittany took us on a tour through the Lodge and gave us all the information we needed for our gamedrives, meals etc. These are just a few of the names we remembered. The entire staff, no matter where we met them on the premises, were so friendly, always ready with a big smile, going out of their way to make us feel at home.
We arrived in South Africa just at the end of a huge storm front which had brought a lot of flooding due to large amounts on rain. The first two days were very rainy and cold, but this did'nt dampen our gamedrives in the least. Nathan, our gameguide provided us with toasty warm ponchos and warm water bottles and his enthusiasm for the wild made these drives trully memorable. His special "cheeky chocochinos" during the morning drives warmed our hearts and souls. A few of the roads were unpassable due to the rains, but we saw an amazing amount of animals, rhino, cheetah, lions, buffalows, hippos, elephants, giraffe.... The biggest highlight was the huge herd of elephant, a family of about 60 elefants which will stay in our memory for ever. The gamedrives in the evening were just as adventurous and well worth taking part of, always with a stop in the bushveld for a sundowner of our choise topped off with delicious snacks.
Our drives always ended in the main Logde where we were greeted with streaming warm facecloths and a welcome drink. The sitting area, diningroom and cocktail bar had huge hearths with roaring fires which made the entire atmosphere really cosy and romantic. After a rainy gamedrive, having a delicious supper in front of a cosy fire is just the perfect way to start the evening. All the meals were delicious and beautifully served. Our Suite was always in perfect order and cosy warm, the grounds are beautifully maintained and as I mentioned before, the staff warm-heated and friendly. We would like to thank everyone in Kichaka Lodge for making our stay so special, especially the delicious birthday cake and our beautiful decorated room on our last evening.

We thought our 3rd visit to Lalibela would provide the ideal introduction for our grandsons from the USA to an RSA game reserve. Our accommodation in Marks Camp, a two double bed family cottage for the 2 boys and their parents and a beautiful cottage for the grand parents, were both in the style and up to the standard one would expect from a private game reserve.
The staff were very pleasant and obliging. The young lady who provided the boys with games and activities for a few hours each day not only kept them interested but really seemed to enjoy her role. The food was very good and our youngest grandson's special dietary requirements were satisfied with little fuss. The limited and obviously well selected beverages were both enjoyable and well priced.
We were fortunate to be able to share our ranger Craig's seemingly unlimited knowledge of both the history of the reserve and its fauna and flora. The way he introduced the boys to the animals and their behaviour and took pains to point out their tracks and individual traits and features was both educational and amusing. He also patiently took time to understand and answer their many questions.
The off season rates and easy driving from Cape Town on the N2, with stop offs in Knysna on the way up and Plett on the home journey without having to worry about Malaria or enduring the long and tiring and expensive fly/drive options to the lowveld make this an almost no brainer winter break for those who live in the Western Cape.
All in all an excellent and most enjoyable experience and one we hope to be able to repeat in the not too distant future.

We stayed in Marks Camp. It is a child friendly lodge. Everything was beautiful from the room/cottage to the common areas. The food and service was amazing. We went for our game rides with Peter. He was great and funny and made us all who were initially nervous very relaxed.
We really enjoyed our time there. The only suggestion is to make it possible pay for the souvenirs in the lodge and not only as you enter game reserve. I desperately wanted to buy some Nimji dolls that I have seen in my room, but they were not able to take card payment at the lodge.

We've recently returned from 2 nights at this amazing and special game lodge. Our experience overall was absolutely wonderful. From the welcome at the gate, throughout our stay, the Lalibela team were exceptionally warm, friendly, courteous and extremely helpful. The lodge is beautiful, right in the heart of nature, with an abundance of magnificent wildlife. Our guide, Ticha, was exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly and had a great sense of humour too. The meals were delicious and plentiful, and our food allergies were catered for seemingly effortlessly. Our rooms were very comfortable and luxurious, with quality linen and fittings - all beautifully co-ordinated. A huge thank you to ALL for making our stay truly magical. We will be sure to be back.

Our February visit to Lalibela Game Reserve, this time a family trip staying at Mark's Camp with our grandchildren, daughter, and son-in-law. What an outstanding experience, from our initial inquiry to our departure after two wonderful nights at the reserve. Our room and the family suite were top notch, the staff exceeded all expectations (particularly dealing with a grandchild's food allergy), and the four game drives were more than one could ever hope for. Child friendly, yet luxurious, Lalibela is the ultimate "safari" destination.

My husband and I spent 3 absolutely perfect days at the Lalibela Lentaba lodge. We really enjoyed every minute of our stay: from the spacious, very private and luxurious chalet to the wonderful 4 delicious and varied mealtimes, the breathtaking wildlife and scenery, and the lovely, friendly staff and our amazing game ranger Liezl! She did a great job of ensuring that we saw wensaw everything we wanted to (only the leopard proved elusive) and more...
We met some lovely fellow guests and just generally enjoyed the varied days of amazing game drives, relaxing afternoon snooze in a cool room, to the breathtaking sundowners out in the game reserve and the entertaining mealtimes...
Thanks to all the Lalibela staff - we can thoroughly recommend this lodge and really hope to be lucky enough to come back in the future.

What an incredible experience! We stayed 3 nights at the Lentaba Lodge and had the most wonderful time. We were very fortunate to be the only guests on our first evening and so we were treated to a private game drive, and a romantic candlelit meal by the fireplace. We felt well and truly spoilt by everyone throughout our stay. Everyone is so warm, welcoming and friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable and memorable. We really appreciated the little touches made to help us celebrate our honeymoon.
The lodge is beautiful. Every meal was delicious, and there was always a wide array to choose from. Our room was beautifully decorated, impeccably clean and spacious, and it was a delight to relax on the veranda and watch the elephants walk past. The on site bar kept us refreshed during the evenings (and the cheeky g&t around the pool to cool down).
Thank you to Peter, our ranger on the game drives, is incredible knowledgeable, and kept us highly engaged on all of our game drives. He’s very friendly, easy to get along with, and we enjoyed his company and expertise on the drives. We loved his genuine enthusiasm throughout, and it’s clear that the welfare of the animals is a high priority for him. We felt completely safe on the game drives knowing that Peter would never put us in a dangerous position, he was constantly alert to any changes and altered our routes accordingly. The game drives were an incredible experience and we saw a vast array of animals, wildlife, and plants.
The Lalibela Game Reserve is incredible, and we would love to come and visit again if we get the chance to. It’s such a large area, yet we saw a great range of animals in their natural habitat. We will definitely be recommending Lalibela to anyone planning a trip to South Africa, and we hope to see you all again. Thank you for the wonderful experience, and memories.

We have just returned from an amazing weekend at Marks Camp.
The staff and service were fantastic. On arrival we were greeted by Zinkita and Elvis and driven to the Lodge by Langa. All staff are incredibly friendly and go out of their way to assist you.
We were met at Marks Camp by Wendy and offered the most delicious welcome drinks. Then off to our rooms to unpack - rooms are beautifully decorated. Quick lunch followed by a refreshing swim and then it was time for our first game drive.
Our game ranger, Carrie Ann was amazing. she is a young woman who is clearly passionate about animals and the environment and she loved sharing her knowledge with us.
We were fortunate enough to see a cheetah with his kill and managed to spot 2 aardwolf on our nighttime game drive - wihch was very special.
We loved the little touches, turn down service with nougat and little notes with African folklore at night and a tea and coffee station with marshmallows to add to your hot chocolate with home made biscuits available all day. As we checked out before breakfast we received a packed breakfast for our trip back to the airport together with a beautiful coffee table book.
Marks Camp is ideally suited to families and we will definitely be back!

Dear Dylan and Tamaryn Thank you for your detailed review of Mark's Camp on Lalibela Game Reserve.Carrie-Ann is such a bubbly and vibrant young lady who has so much knowledge and a great passion for her job. She is a fantastic guide. That is definitely a sighting to remember as it is not every day that you get to see a cheetah with their kill! It is even more special to have seen not one, but two Aardwolf! That is very rare so you should consider yourself very lucky! We believe the small touches compliment your experience so we are happy to know you enjoyed them. We hope to see you again one day! Kind regards, The Lalibela Team

We were a group of 8 and took over the Tree tops lodge, the staff couldn't have been more hospitable, cooked delicious food, in fact there was far too much and we cancelled lunch. Our wonderful guide Lisel, took us out for way longer on the first morning, it was initially foggy so very hard to see anything, then we heard monkeys screeching in a wood so she drove off the track, we ducked and dived to avoid branches, only to come across an exhausted cheetah, so close my zoom lens wasn't needed. our second evening we saw lions up very close, and two herds of elephants - my goodness what an experience. On our last morning while watching the hippos wallowing in the water a herd of giraffe come lolling by, and on the way home we saw 2 newly born wildebeest - we also saw rhino twice.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your question.
The morning game drive will leave around 06h00 while the afternoon game drive leaves at about 16h00. Both the drives are about 3 hours long. The exact times will be discussed with you on arrival. These are just an estimate.
Kind regards,
The Lalibela Team
Dear Alissa
Thank you for your question.
We have five different lodges on Lalibela Game Reserve. The lodges are situated about a 30 minute drive apart. This means that meals and game drives are done from each of the respective lodges. Each lodge is separate from the others. There is no opportunity for guests staying at different lodges to meet up. There are common areas at each of the lodges where guests staying at that specific lodge can meet up. Our game viewing vehicles can seat a maximum of ten guests. Please don't hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions.
Dear Rebekah
Thank you for your question! We can arrange a transfer for you from Port Elizabeth to Lalibela Game Reserve and back. This is however at an additional cost and depends on the amount of people and the pick up and drop of point. If you would like to book a transfer, please can you email us so that we can assist you.
Dear Hannah
Thank you for your question.
Mark's Camp is our family friendly lodge. We have a lovely children's programme on offer to keep the children entertained between the game drives. The children will be able to participate in various fun activities. Children aged between 2 and 7 years old are only allowed to go out on the children's game drive. Children 8 years and older are allowed to go on the adults game drive. One adult is allowed to join the children's game drive if they would like to join the children. A child minder will accompany the children on the game drive to ensure that they are safe at all times.
You are welcome to refer to our website to view our children's programme.
I hope this answers your question.
Kind Regards,
The Lalibela Team
