This private game reserve's location in the Eastern Cape means it is not only malaria free, but spans 5 ecosystems, resulting in a breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna. Lalibela has 5 lodges, all offering decor that is infused with the essence of Africa, as well as warm and friendly service and unforgettable game viewing. The 3 main aspects of any African safari are the game-viewing, the accommodation and the food – at Lalibela we take special care to ensure that heartfelt service combines with these three “ingredients” to make your Big 5 African safari experience a memorable one.
We stayed at Kichaka lodge for two nights and had a lovely experience. The rooms were beautiful and we had a small plunge pool overlooking a water hole and the service excellent. The game drives were about 3 hours each and we went 4 times. Our guide Guy was very knowledgeable and great fun. He made an effort at all times and answered all our questions, thank you. The highlight was seeing a cheetah and her 4 baby cubs popping their heads up above the grass to see what was going on along. The food was excellent and we enjoyed the fact we could arrive for lunch on our first day and settle in before the game drive in the afternoon. The reserve also kindly arranged to post an item of clothing back to me in Cape Town which I had forgotten, thank you for your help on this, much appreciated. A very nice game reserve where there is an abundance of animals and where you can stay in luxury.…

My family and I stayed at Mark’s camp for three nights in April 2022. We have three young boys aged 1, 5 and 8. My wife and I honeymooned in Shamwari next door 15 years ago and we were keen to do a safari with our kids. Mark’s camp appeared to have a family feel which appealed to us. Undoubtedly this is the finest game reserve we have ever been on. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we were treated with a level of service not previously experienced. Their attention to detail is unrivalled. A five star treatment is guaranteed. The rooms are top quality and easily accommodated us all. The food served is high quality with 3 meals served daily. Local produce such as Ostrich, Kudu and Eland is served daily and is quite simply delicious. I would like to note the staff at Mark’s camp as the most courteous and professional staff I have ever encountered. They simply cannot do enough for you. On each game drive we left our 1 year old in the main house with a childminder and the house staff. It was clear on our return how engaged the house team were with minding our child when we were on drives. This service was inclusive on our package and allowed us to relax in confidence on our drives. We had a morning and evening game drive each day. Our ranger “Guy” was absolutely brilliant at his job and he went above and beyond each day to accommodate my wife and I and especially our two young boys who accompanied us on each game drive. He was extremely accommodating of us and answered all of our questions on the animals, no matter how silly! We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, buffaloes, hippos, cheetahs and many more animals. Each drive was an amazing experience. Guy knows his trade and was brilliant at entertaining the kids. He also spent time playing football and games at Mark’s camp each day in between game drives. I had concerns about keeping my kids engaged with the game drives given their duration and the earliness of the morning drives however on our last drive my boys were fully dressed, packed and waiting at 530am ready for action!! I credit Guy with this anticipation. My boys had an unforgettable experience made better by Guy’s enthusiasm and commitment to customer satisfaction. My boy’s Sam and Jacob are still talking about their experience and are already wondering when we are going back. The animals at Lalibela are truly amazing and to experience them up close in the natural habitat is something I cannot recommend enough. A truly memorable experience. Thank you Mark’s camp. The Hennebry family.…

We had a fabulous time at Lalibela, Tree Tops Lodge. We hired a car from Port Elizabeth Airport to the Reserve and felt safe driving along the motorways. The team who looked after us were fabulous and friendly. The food was delicious and selection of wines good too. Our guide, Sivi (not sure of spelling), was great and found all the game we could possibly have seen. It really was a top safari, full of adventure and great scenery all around.

Our second visit to Lalibela, for 5 nights, and again it was amazing, wonderful, superb. The accommodation & food is fantastic, all of the staff are the best ever, and the game drives are the best we've experienced - & we've been on quite a few throughout Africa. Our ranger, the Baron of Botany himself, Pieter, was incredibly knowledgeable & really interesting - we learnt so much. We took some stunning photos, we're very well pleased with the results. Despite going on to another game reserve, we were almost tearful at leaving, and can't wait to return for our third visit in 2024. Can't recommend it too highly

This was my second visit and this time we brought the family including the boys with their Canadian girlfriends. It was spectacular African hospitality. The girls were blown away by the animals, the accommodation, the food and the people. Our guide was Guy, he was entertaining and fun and made the experience. The rooms are beautiful and the food is fabulous. I can’t recommend this reserve enough. We had excellent animal sittings including a cheetah on a kill and the brown hyena coming along for the leftovers. Elephant and more. Such a great visit. I also brought medical supplies for the clinic in the local community and some knitted items, toys and children’s clothes. They kindly took me to tour the rec centre that is supported by the Lalibela Foundation and meet some of the people who live in the community. It was very meaningful.…

We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your second visit to Lalibela and that your son's girlfriends enjoyed their first safari experience. We stayed at Lalibela Mark's Camp for two nights in November 2023. It was just perfect. The reserve is small, informal and exceptionally friendly. The staff are attentive, helpful and happy. There is a lovely atmosphere throughout the whole reserve. Our guide, Ryno, was very knowledgeable and friendly and he went out of his way to track the animals that we so wanted to see. There are two pool areas with sun loungers, a bar, two lounges and a communal dining area. The food was exceptional with a light breakfast available before the early game drive and a more substantial breakfast offered afterwards. Both lunch and dinner offered a wide choice of dishes, and all meals were buffet style so everyone could eat as much, or as little, as they wanted. I highly recommend Mark's Camp to anyone wanting a relaxed, informal, friendly environment in which to explore and enjoy a vast range of animals and birds. Many thanks to everyone at Lalibela for making our stay so memorable.…

We had the pleasure of staying in the Kichaka Lodge for 3 Nights. From the moment we passed the gateway upto the moment when we had to leave this beautiful place, I can only say WOW, WOW, WOW!! The welcome we received, first by the main gate by Sam, then by our Guide Nathan and by Nono at the main Lodge was warm-hearted and so friendly. We felt at home straight away. The Lodge is stunning and our Suite was absolutely beautiful. Brittany took us on a tour through the Lodge and gave us all the information we needed for our gamedrives, meals etc. These are just a few of the names we remembered. The entire staff, no matter where we met them on the premises, were so friendly, always ready with a big smile, going out of their way to make us feel at home. We arrived in South Africa just at the end of a huge storm front which had brought a lot of flooding due to large amounts on rain. The first two days were very rainy and cold, but this did'nt dampen our gamedrives in the least. Nathan, our gameguide provided us with toasty warm ponchos and warm water bottles and his enthusiasm for the wild made these drives trully memorable. His special "cheeky chocochinos" during the morning drives warmed our hearts and souls. A few of the roads were unpassable due to the rains, but we saw an amazing amount of animals, rhino, cheetah, lions, buffalows, hippos, elephants, giraffe.... The biggest highlight was the huge herd of elephant, a family of about 60 elefants which will stay in our memory for ever. The gamedrives in the evening were just as adventurous and well worth taking part of, always with a stop in the bushveld for a sundowner of our choise topped off with delicious snacks. Our drives always ended in the main Logde where we were greeted with streaming warm facecloths and a welcome drink. The sitting area, diningroom and cocktail bar had huge hearths with roaring fires which made the entire atmosphere really cosy and romantic. After a rainy gamedrive, having a delicious supper in front of a cosy fire is just the perfect way to start the evening. All the meals were delicious and beautifully served. Our Suite was always in perfect order and cosy warm, the grounds are beautifully maintained and as I mentioned before, the staff warm-heated and friendly. We would like to thank everyone in Kichaka Lodge for making our stay so special, especially the delicious birthday cake and our beautiful decorated room on our last evening. …

There is only one way to describe Inzolo Lodge at Lalibela …fantastic! If you are looking for the authentic African feel this is the place, the three managers of Jay, Talent & Marisca run a wonderful team that can’t do enough for you. We celebrated our wedding anniversary and the housekeeping team of Ntombi and Asanda made a lovely candlelit flower display for us as a surprise. They also keep the rooms immaculate. The three course meals cooked by the three chefs (Nomvuyo, Andile and Manezi) are superb, we really enjoyed the range of authentic African food as well as lovely soups and salads, they can’t do enough for you. Siya and Diana as the Front of House team are there to make sure you have a fantastic stay, serving drinks and arranging anything you need, greeting you with a warm damp towel and refreshing drink after your game drives. Wellile the gardener keeps the garden looking lovely & under control without it being too manicured. The game drives were superb with Ryno, the Inzolo Guide, we would meet at 5.30am for a quick drink and small breakfast, off on the game drive at 6am and back just after 9am for a full cooked breakfast. You have a couple of hours before lunch at 2pm then off on the game drive at 4pm, sundowner drinks in the bush and returning at 7pm ready for dinner. We saw a lot of game, more white rhino than we expected, lions, cheetah, elephant (amazing sighting), buffalo, giraffe, hippo, baboons and many beautiful antelope. We also had a fleeting glimpse of a very elusive caracal and the retreating end of a hyena. We have been on safari before in different countries but this reserve managed to deliver a great variety of game. Ryno was superb getting us great position for sightings every time! His expertise was evident and much appreciated. All in all, the combination of the superb lodge and expert game viewing delivered us a fantastic experience and we were sorry to leave. We plan to return and experience it all over again! Colin & Jane Clarke…
