We stayed for two nights at the Lodge and had a wonderful time. Our rondavel was spotless and the lodge had left a large pitcher of drinking water in our room. We had a braii one night and used the communal facilities which were clean. Rubbish bins were emptied the following day and dishes washed. The second night we had a set dinner of steak and vegetables for mains and a delightful Malva pudding with creme pattisere for dessert. We paid for a guide to take us on a waterfall hike which was beautiful. Other guests we met took horses on treks and enjoyed the experience immensely. Considering the remote location, the standard was very good and a nature lovers paradise, malicite sun birds, large butterflies, red hot poker's in bloom and mountain vistas with crystal clear streams which we swam in in order to cool of from the intense Lesotho sun.

Highlights: Comfortable bedding a hearty breakfast, tricyles for kids and other toys, a nice plaground, beautiful scenery and great for hikes.

We spent two nights at Malealea lodge, tent camping. The camping facilities are great: a communal kitchen with a gas stove and oven, fridges and nice in door eating and cooking area. Nice bathroom and hot shower too. The lodge also provides drinking water for free. The camping sites are nice, there are some with shade. The pool is mostly not available so don't count on this. The lodge has lots of nice things to do such as a pool table, table tennis etc each available for a small fee (ie pool costs ZAR5).
The area around the lodge is not very interesting so we are glad we didn't stay longer, the local children don't leave you alone with you go walking so that becomes very annoying when looking for peace and quiet!
We did a horse ride, lovely ride - glad we started at 8am as the valley becomes very hot.
My only criticism of the lodge is that they really could provide nice maps for hiking in the area - they don't because they want you to pay for a guide which is not necessary. We walked on our own but we would have stayed longer if we had nice maps for hiking extensively in the area. I asked the receptionist for help but was told we could only hike alone if we "liked to get lost"! Not a very good attitude to encourage hikers to visit! Other than that, it's a nice stop over place.

Thank you for your review. There are plenty of things to keep you busy at Malealea as you mentioned. The pool is dependent on rain and only available once we have ample water. We keep it open over Christmas/New Year but then have found nobody swims after this and the rest of the ear the water is too cold and the pool reverts to water storage. As it was school holidays the time you visited this is just the reason we suggest you take a hiking guide with you as the local children latch onto you if you are guide-less in order to show you their space. I'm sure the comment from reception was meant to be a joke as it is impossible to get lost in the Malealea valley as you can always see the trees around the lodge. Overall I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

Very friendly staff that is very helpful and obliging. The place itself is so idyllic with a lot of focus on details. Only minus perhaps is the unavailability of "real" lunch options (only sandwiches...). But with regard to common food wastage in lodges this might be the price to pay to combat food wastage!

Thank you so much, Debbie, Michael, bob, the rest of the staff and Guides. We had the best time while we were there. It's relaxing to get away, slow down and re-focus in a tranquil location surrounded by mountains. Even though the weather is fairly unpredictable the temperature is great and not as hot as other destinations in Southern Africa during December, January. The option of having dinner or cooking our own was also easy on the budget.

Take some time to read about the history of Malealea and explore the premises, it's very interesting what you may find.

We'll be definitely be back for the multi-day pony trek.

Stayed for 4 nights and fell in love with this special place!
Views from wherever you looked were just stunning. This place isn’t posh by any means, but it doesn’t need to be as you can’t help but fall in love with everything about it!
It’s laid back, friendly, unique and one of the most relaxing places I’ve stayed ever.
Dinner is announced by a bell being rung and was always of great quality and served by happy, friendly staff who went out of their way to cope with my husband not being able to have gluten.
Choir and band every night were enjoyable - really loved the band - great fun!
Went horse riding and our guide was always helpful and keen to make sure that we had a great time.
Owner was engaged and sat by the fire on an evening chatting with guests and always on top of if everyone was ok.
Grounds gorgeous and always a quiet place to be found with an amazing view. Never seen stars like it!
The local population are involved and engaged with Malealea, which really added to our positive experience.
Don’t change a thing - we will definitely be back!

Relaxed, friendly atmosphere awaits at this lodge that lives up to its reputation. Setting is spectacular, mountains interwoven by gorges an cliffs, fields and pastures, small villages and people tending their crops, and it’s all easily accessible by foot or by horse - the choice is yours. Horse rides are a must, very pleasant experience with equally pleasant guides, all easily organized. You can choose the length of the rides, the area you want to explore, the difficulty of the terrain – very convenient. The other reviews describe the place well, so I won’t repeat the same. I loved the choir and the bend in the evenings, they were really good and I had never heard the likes of their music before. In general, it’s a laid-back place, so expect no frills. There are few minor things that could be improved– hence the score of 4 stars. Accommodation is adequate, though somewhat tired. Stayed in an en suite hut, but the shower drain was blocked and even after some seconds in shower you had to stand in water up to your ankles, while the sink was so impossibly miniature that it was an achievement not to splash around… Another thing is a choice of food (snacks) at the lunch time. There is a little café where you can order some refreshments during the day, as the restaurant is closed between breakfast and dinner at 7 pm, sufficient time to get really hungry. Alas, there’s nothing but a basic toast to order there and quench the hunger, and there’s nowhere else to buy food. Other than that, lean back (or put your hiking shoes on) and enjoy!

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback as it helps us to focus on the things you mention. Currently we are embarking on an upgrade within the rooms starting with the rondawels. However, showers should never be blocked. Lunch is available in the dining room if ordered in advance and there are pasta options if required. We are happy you enjoyed your stay.

We spent two nights there and we would go there again.
It is a nice place for a stay in Lesotho. You can take the chance to have a walk with a local through the village or made a horse track.

We felt very warm with the people there and can't say any negative things about the room or the accommodation itself.

This is the second time that my family and I have stayed at Malealea and we love it each time (and can't wait to go back again). It is such a beautiful stop in Lesotho, and so rejuvenating. We stayed in the family house, which was a huge house with two big bedrooms, a nice kitchen, two full bathrooms, a big living room, and a lovely porch overlooking the mountains. The beds were very comfortable, showers nice and warm, and the staff was so friendly. The food was delicious as well. I would totally recommend coming here to anyone who visits/lives in Lesotho.

My family and I visited Malealea shortly after Christmas (2019) for a night stay. My husband and I were travelling with our two young children and we had been on the road for quite a while prior to the trip. We were all exhausted! Despite the rain and cool weather - my boys were on the grass to play with the friendly dogs as soon as they could.

We enjoyed a hearty dinner and a glass of wine with fellow lodgers while watching the soccer. I am especially grateful to the ladies in the kitchen for waiting for us to come to arrive back at the lodge for dinner (after 7pm) and for keeping the food warm. I am also hugely grateful to our two pony trekking guides who were patient with all of us, particularly the one guide who rode on his horse with our one-year old son to and from the falls.

The hearts of Basotho people are so pure, so warm and at Malealea I was reminded of that :)

Hi Jonathan Some of the hikes can be done without a guide. The guiding system was created to provide employment. There are some hikes that require a guide as there are a multitude of paths and it is easy to end up on the wrong side of the valley as well as cliff faces.

We can arrange a transfer for you from the airport/Maseru. We make use of a local shuttle service. Alternatively, you can make use of public transport but it can be a little slow and therefore timeous.
