Morukuru Beach Lodge is a luxury boutique style 5-suite lodge in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, offering endless ocean views. We are situated just a few 100 meters from the pristine beach, surrounded by fynbos. The reserve is perfect for land-based whale watching (July-October). We recommend to spend at least 2 nights to be able to enjoy the various activities on offer including tidal walks, mountain biking and dune boarding. For those that want to relax, we also offer a pool and a hottub at the lodge. Down at the beach protected rock pools offer great snorkelling and swimming opportunities as well. Morukuru Beach Lodge has been built with the greatest sensitivity to the environment. Due to our remote location we are fully off the grid. Our electricity is generated entirely by solar panels, for the odd longer cloudy periods we do have a backup generator however. Our hot water is produced by pellet burners and the whole lodge has water based underfloor heating.

There are not enough words to describe how exceptional this experience was. We felt like royalty. The room was unparalleled and coming in after dinner to a small fire with the doors open to the sea was incredible. The staff goes ABOVE and beyond. Corne, Dolfie, and Lynette especially. They even arranged for some last minute gifts for me when my boyfriend forgot about Valentine’s Day. Which wasn’t easy given how far town is! The beaches are gorgeous, the marine life walks were surreal and incredible. Each meal, catered to me with celiac disease, and our own names on each menu, every bite was delicious and wonderful. Even with bad weather we were so sad to leave. Thank you to everyone and sorry for taking so long to review. Tom proposed on our next stop on the trip and we got married! Might’ve thrown him overboard somewhere without your help!

We had the pleasure of staying in the Morukuru Beach Loge for four nights. After a long and adventurous drive directly from Grahamstown, we were greeted by a beautiful Lodge in the middle of paradise. Kayleith, Cornè, Elliot and the rest of the staff were so warm-hearted and friendly, making us feel at home straight away. After a delicious welcome drink and a tour through the Lodge we were brought to our Honeymoon suite. WOW, absolutely stunning.!! The Suite is gorgeous, filled with little extras like personalised waterbottles, fruit, biscuits and a little present on your pillow every evening. It has a huge secluded private wooden patio, complete with a stone bath, sun loungers and seating area. True, you only have a partial view of the ocean, BUT the fynbos stops where your patio starts. You have first row in watching birds building their nests and catching insects, often spying a little fynbos inhabitant flitting about and you can watch the most amazing sunrise from your bed or patio whilst sipping your pre-morning tea and coffee. The huge slidingdoors opening onto you patio can be kept open as screendoors prevent anything from crawing or flying into your suit, even at night. All you hear are the sounds of the fynbos and the waves breaking. The marine walks, sandboarding, fynbos walks and nature drives were a pleasure to take part of. Cornè taught us a lot about the fynbos and the little creatures that we saw in the low-tide pools. The meals were delicious and beautifully served and the new little restaurant Bites, where we had lunch twice, a delight. Watching whales breaching whilst having breakfast or lunch or even just a drink is truly an amazing experience. The food and hospitality in second to none, we enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you to the entire Morukuru Beach Lodge staff for making our stay so relaxing and perfect. A big highlight was the beautifully decorated Suite on our last evening. We were celebrating our wedding annivesary, and the Staff went out of their way, decorating our suite with hearts and candles, filling our bathtub and placing chocolate covered strawberries and champagne next to it. A trully memorable stay in every way.

This was our second visit , everything was equally perfect to the first. The reason for writing another review is to highlight the additional facility of Bites Beach Cafe. We had beautiful food in Beach House & thoroughly enjoyed all the meals, however it was nice to have an alternative venue for dining. We had a magical evening meal prepared & served by Beach House chefs & staff at Bites, but we also walked down to the cafe for lunch one day. The menu for Bites is very good but we recommend their home made cakes as an alternative to having a full lunch, particularly the baked cheesecake & carrot cake, delicious!!

Thank you so much for your review and feedback, after your second stay at Morukuru Beach Lodge. It has been such a pleasure welcoming you back and this time you also got to experience the new Bites Beach Café that was opened in February this year. Very happy to hear that you enjoyed the additional option and that you got to experience the African themed dinner night at Bites (offered a few nights each week), as well as a casual lunch. And yes, we totally agree with you: the cakes at Bites are delicious! We hope to be able to welcome you back for a third stay in the not too distant future. Until then, warmest regards from all of us at Morukuru Family.

Morukuru is a magical place. The staff took incredible care of us (special thank you to Blessing)! My husband is immunocompromised and they made sure we were comfortable, allowing us to eat outside even when it was cold to ensure our safety, and they did so without making us feel in any way that it was odd or unusual or in any way an issue. (Note the hotel is on the smaller side with only 5 rooms and commons spaces so to defend this property from a previous reviewers complaints, it would be impossible to have anyone with covid staying at this hotel without risking others. Thank you, Morukuru, for taking this seriously.) De Hoop of course is an extraordinary place and Morukuru gives you the perfect perch for whale watching, fynbos exploration and beach activities, with I believe(?) over 50 km of nature-preserved beach coastline. (A true paradise away from the throngs of Hermanus.) The food is fabulous too, with wonderful options and creativity without being precious. We highly recommend.

Thank you so very much for your review and very kind feedback. We are very happy to hear how much you enjoyed your time at Morukuru Beach Lodge. It is correct that with just 5 spacious and comfortable suites we are a small property only, this does enable us to offer personalised service and attention. And the health and safety of our guests and staff are paramount at all times. We very much appreciate your comments about that, as well as the recommendation. De Hoop Nature Reserve does offer just over 50 kilometers of totally unspoilt coastline and beaches, flanked by fynbos covered dunes. As a Marine Protected Area, the reserve offers some of the best land-based whale watching anywhere in the world. Our team enjoyed hosting you and we hope to be able to welcome you back one day. Warmest regards from all of us at Morukuru Family.

This was the first leg of our journey in South Africa, which included the awesome Morukuru Family Madikwe. While not the adventurous and private safari lodge like the latter, this was nevertheless pure bliss as we stayed 2 nights in some of the most relaxing surroundings. We did both the fynbos nature walk and the marine walk during low tides with our awesome guide Jaco - it was both peaceful, educational, yet exciting with the periodic breaching of the southern right whales that were all around us in the bay. (Early Sep) Sandboarding was an exhilarating experience for the family, though I have to caution that the potential for pain or injury is certainly there despite the super soft sand. The crew was super kind - Elliott, Blessing, Hilton, and especially Jaco, whom my son enjoyed playing table tennis with. Food was fantastic both at the Beach Lodge where we stayed, and at the Bites restaurant, which has a different vibe. All in, a really beautiful chill-out stay, and if peace and rejuvenation is the main objective, we would gladly stay more nights here.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and feedback, we really appreciate it and are happy to hear that you enjoyed the various activities, guided by Jaco. August and September are the best months for spectacular land-based whale watching right in front of Morukuru Family De Hoop, with the whale season starting in July and ending end of October. We are also happy to hear that you enjoyed the food at Morukuru Beach Lodge and at our casual Bites Beach Café down at the beach. We hope to welcome you back for longer stay next time. We spend 2 nights at Morukuru Beach Lodge in February and enjoyed every minute of it! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed as friends by the staff, who looked after us very well. Our room was huge, very comfortable and oh so quiet, offering incredible views of the ocean and the nearby sand dunes. The food was delicious and the traditional South African 'potjie' breakfast one morning, cooked in the firepit in front of the restaurant was really special. Our guide took us out on various activities including a nature drive and a fynbos walk and one evening we enjoyed sand-boarding and sundowner drinks in the sand dunes, with an Eland watching our antics from a little distance. We also spent time on the beach and even went for a refreshing swim in one of the tidal pools, followed by a light lunch (pizza and burger) at the new Bites Beach Café, that offers the most incredible ocean views. Thank you to Kayleigh, Corné, Dolfie, Nicholas, Hilton and the rest of the team, we hope to return one day.

We were on our way to stay at the Morukuru Ocean Lodge and received a call not to come. We had fully disclosed that we tested for Covid but had no symptoms and we were denied from coming. There was absolutely nothing on their site stating that we would be turned away if testing positive for Covid. We were prepared to self-isolate and wear masks and not eat with others. What was infuriating is that we had no place to stay and they would not fully refund our money which was substantial. We had alerted them the day before of our situation but there was no response until the next day as we were traveling to their lodge. So we cannot say or rate the facility but can rate that the way we were treated as a customer was an extremely poor customer service experience. Please be careful and verify their policies in advance of booking so should you get sick on your vacation you are not left stranded like we were.

Thank you for your review and feedback. There seems to be some confusion on your side. You were booked for 2 nights at Morukuru Beach Lodge, not at the exclusive-use Morukuru Ocean House. Your stay with us was booked through another property, as part of a 4-night package. They should have advised us about the positive COVID test the moment they were made aware of it, which is when you arrived there. This has not happened. For some reason they only sent an email to us late in the afternoon before your arrival, using an incorrect email address of one of our staffmembers who was on leave at that time, not the general email address that they normally use. We did not receive the email and sadly they did not follow-up when they did not receive a reply from us. They only called us the next morning, a few hours before you were due to arrive, to explain the situation. That was the first time we heard about the positive COVID test. We agree with you that this situation should have been handled more elegantly and we could have assisted better in finding a solution, had we not been informed only 2 hours before your arrival. In this case there was a positive COVID test a few days before you arrived at the first property. At that time you (or your travel agent) should have informed us about it. That has not happen and you chose to travel as per normal. We did not belatedly refuse you to stay with us, we did so the moment we were advised of your medical situation, which was the morning of your arrival. With just 5 suites, all under one roof in the same building, Morukuru Beach Lodge would not be able to offer you proper self-isolation as you were due to arrive well before the check-in time of 14:00 hrs and your room was not ready for you yet. That meant you would have to share public space with our other guests. At all times it is our aim to protect our guests as well as our staff. We can’t afford to risk our guests or staff getting COVID at Morukuru Family De Hoop, certainly not when we know we could have avoided it. As per our COVID policy, which your travel agent has received from us as well, we unfortunately are unable to welcome guests that have tested positive for COVID and we will offer a refund less 10% cancellation fees in this case, due to the short notice given. Should we have been advised about the positive COVID test as soon as you received it, which was a few days before you arrived at the first property that booked your stay with us, we would have been able to all work together and find a suitable solution for all of us. We do feel sorry that we have not been given that opportunity. We do hope you will recover soon and that you will manage to enjoy the rest of your time in South Africa in good health.

Thank you so much for your review and feedback, which we very much appreciate. Our location on the beach inside the De Hoop Nature Reserve does mean that we are very secluded indeed, with access on gravel roads from Bredasdorp or Swellendam. The coastline offers various coves and beaches, some of which have natural tidal pools that we recommend for swimming during low tide. Other parts are quite rocky indeed and we prefer those beaches for our tidal walk, when our guides explain about the marine life. Thank you so much for your recommendation. Warmest regards from all of us at Morukuru Family
