I would recommend that the property invests in a generator, we had an experience off load shedding (which I am sure will happen again),acknowledging this is beyond the control of management, however It was a bit of an inconvenience as we stayed in the double chalet to self cater and this prevented us from doing so. Mariaan was great at handling this situation and offered us a basic breakfast. The cleanliness was not great as we found a lot of dust, not sure when last the room was booked before our stay, kitchen had sugar and coffee for us however is was so hard, not sure how long it's been in those canisters. They also went the extra mile because it was my birthday on the book in date I found the kitchen table decorated with birthday messages, this was a very sweet gesture, it showed care and consideration. We did not like that fact that the double chalet accommodates 8 people with only one shower. They need to do something around the lighting around the pool area, it is very dim with only one light. The double chalet has a separated gate for parking however the gate is very small and inconvenient 3 of out the 5 vehicles actually scraped and squeaked as we pulled in, 1 vehicle parked at the gate as it was too low to even attempt going through the gate. The entrance of the property can be worked on as you can tell certain places as you enter had concrete to ease the drive in, however this falling apart and damaging to vehicles that are low. Overall did we actually have a great time as we intended to and would consider coming back.

Ostrich manor is in a quiet peaceful spot with great views from the pool. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and th place is set in lovely grounds. The people were very friendly and helpful and they served a great breakfast. A few small things like the stratchy toilet paper and cheap instant coffee in the rooms but overall it was a great stay.

Yvette and Remon were great hosts. They were extremely accommodating and fun to interact with. I would recommend staying here just for the atmosphere at the accommodation. The evening fires and making new friends was worth the visit. It was clean and friendly environment with an adorable dog. It is a guesthouse so if your looking for luxury/fancy accommodation you won't get it here but you will definitely have a laid back chilled out time. The host are in the process of upgrading so if you are looking for a bit more luxury, I would suggest you you check out their website for pics of any upgrades before you decide to give it a miss.

I have read many of the reviews and could not understand why our experience was not as great as the reviews posted, but I think it is because most of the guests are foreigners who would probably find it cheap and, looking for the "African experience", do not have high expectations. As a local South African, I was unfortunately not impressed. We were looking for a family holiday where we could rest and relax in nature having drinks next to a pool and have game drives and spa treatments, however this is not exactly how it played out.

In general the look and feel :
Although the lodge seem to be fully booked, it did not feel crowded. The lodge itself is spacious and has lots of relaxation areas. There is a lovely swimming pool which was a lifesaver in the heat -we spent a lot of time on the terraces and in the pool and the gardens are well kept with beautiful trees.

There is a sauna at the pool area, but it was not functioning during our stay.

We booked 3 different units : A Family room for for us an our two children, a Double room for my parents and the self catering Chalet for my brother and his wife.
The Family room (Elephant) had a double bed and a bunk-bed which was comfortable.
There was a ceiling mounted fan and mosquito net above the double bed. Little ventilation for the areas where children sleep so we had to carry their mattresses next to our bed on the floor, in order for them to be able to sleep in the heat.
Opening any windows attracts insects –they should really consider putting up insect barriers at windows.
This Family room had a shower(no bath), a toilet and a kettle. No fridge. A drawer cabinet and a clothes hanging rack which provided very limited space for clothing (short stays only I assume)
The Double room had two single beds and a separate bunk-bed, Also a ceiling fan and net only above the main sleeping area.Shower and toilet with a kettle. This unit had a small fridge in the closet.
The Chalet is a couple of 100 meters away from the main lodge and facilities. Unit is spacious with it's own braai area and has a double bed with a ceiling fan and net. Kettle and fridge. This unit has a thatch roof and is therefore much cooler.

Overall -Very basic facilities (hence apparently the "eco lodge"?- basically it is camping without the tent, although you could have a tent if you wanted one). No TV. Rooms are not serviced and therefore coffee and tea also not replenished . We were also only issued with 2 bath towels for 4 people in the Family room.

The Staff:
The lodge manager (also the ranger that took us out on a game drive) was very friendly, forthcoming and tried his utmost to accommodate us with what he had at his disposal.
It seems as if there was a shortage of staff, we could only see the manager/ranger and an assistant/ranger and one cleaning lady(for common areas) which we saw maybe twice during our stay.
Although we were informed that we could purchase beverages at the lodge during the day (here were boards displayed prohibiting own food and beverages), 60% of the time there was no one around to assist with getting something to drink or anything else.
We got the feeling that the lodge would prefer their guest to be out and about site-seeing or participating in activities during the day and basically only sleep at the lodge, there is very little to no service during the day.

Meals:
Meals are served in a dining area inside or on the stoep, with a pleasant view of the gardens.
Breakfast is served daily. It is a tasty hearty breakfast, but it is also the same everyday without variation.

We booked dinner for the first night which they were unable to provide on our arrival(no chef), however we were offered take-away pizza which was fine as we were not very hungry, but it is clear that they would prefer not to offer meals apart from breakfast – it is recommended to go out for meals(there are many places to eat in and around Hartebeespoort dam a short drive away, but you need to leave the premises).
The last night the owner prepared a wonderful dinner for us – this is on request and should be arranged in advance.

Location:
The lodge is well situated just outside of the Hartebeespoort residential and commercial area and therefore many activities, site-seeing and restaurants are an easy 5-15 minute drive away.

The African experience (ruffing it):
Mosquito plague was excessive, the last night we had to spray insecticide in our room- so we were greeted later that night with a carpet of dead mosquito and had to leave everything open again to get rid of the poison smell - which basically defeated the purpose. We were not able to stay the 4th night - I could just not get through another sleepless night, so we checked out a day early.

For 1 day we were without water at the lodge due to a broken water pump(unforeseen breakdown) so it was very unpleasant when we returned from our dinner all sweaty and tired and unable to take a shower.

Spa:
The spa services at the lodge is an external mobile spa which needs to be arranged in advance with therapists and therefore the therapists would bring their equipment and set up a room which is not necessarily ideal. The cost of treatments is fairly cheap, but you get what you pay for, it felt a little haphazard and when they forgot to bring things it was obviously not rectifiable.

The hosts were very welcoming and made some awesome warm breakfast.
The Safari Tents were warmer than you would think in winter with some lighting and the water was always hot.
Pretty cool place all in all

I would like to thank Yvette, Raymond, baby Chris n Dilo for making the long weekend such a memorable experience. The tent was comfortable with all the basic necessities. The venue close to the dam, aerial cableway, charming restaurant with the Paris feel etc. Yvette arranged the boat ride and game drive for us. The home cooked meals were delicious and filling. Besides the lack of signage Ostrich Manor is the perfect getaway from the hustle n bustle.

Great accomodation! The rooms are very nice and the breakfast is great! I did both the game drive and the mountain hike during my stay, which both were awesome. The guys who are running the place are incredibly friendly and they did their very best to make my visit at the manor as pleasent as possible.
Something´s that very important is that this is an eco-lodge, which means that they are showing big responsibility when it comes to social, ecological and economical questions within sustainable developmen (good working conditions for their empoyees etc).

Would really recommend Ostrich Manor for a quick stopover or a few days' break from the big city. We were treated to exceptional hospitality from arrival to departure and thoroughly enjoyed our two hour drive in the Nature Reserve. We found Dilo extremely knowledgeable about the area and the game/buck. Our dinner and breakfast were both great quality and our whole stay was reasonably priced. Accommodation is fairly basic though comfortable and the Manor and surroundings are beautiful.
One of the boys left his hoodie behind and Dilo couldn't have been more helpful in accommodating its retrieval and transport on to our lodge at Madikwe.
All in all, an excellent stay and to be recommended 100%
Thanks so much for everything, Dilo.
