This lodge exceeded my expectations in all possible ways.
Rooms and bathroom very nice and clean, staff VERY helpful, amazing food, beautiful decoration. Every night we had dinner in a different setting of the lodge. One night upstairs, looking the giraffes eating while we were having dinner, the other night outside, under a tree, by a very nicely decorated table. You can see the staff put a lot of effort in making your stay memorable. And they definetely achieve it.
All safaris were previouly arranged and done in perfection. Our guide was VERY knowledgeable on the animals (not only the big five), the plants and the traditions of the people (he was born IN the park!!!).
Very, very recommended for anyone interested in a safari lodge close to Kruger.

Thank you for your friendly review and for taking the time to write the review. We apologise for the late response. We are the new owners since February 2020, we have made numerous changes to the lodge including a restaurant and deck overlooking the waterhole and welcome all our guests around the new boma. The new restaurant and deck ensures that everybody gets beautiful sightings of the animals on a regular basis. Much appreciated Sunset Management.

Definitely a highlight of our month away! Edwina and Wayne are fantastic hosts and make you feel right at home. We stayed in the honeymoon suite which was very nice. All of the rooms back onto the pool in the center.
The property is on a small nature reserve that is home to some zebra, ostrich's and a giraffe. Upstairs there is a nice sized bar, with tables and chairs, stools, couch, or two hammocks. There is a beautiful view up here as well, perfect for sundowners.

The food was an experience here, both for variety and taste. One night we had dinner out in the boma where Wayne treated us to a real South African Braii. It is a cozy intimate atmosphere with our hosts, as well as with other fun guests we met on our travels.

Our safari was awesome! We had John as a guide, and he was great, he knew exactly where to take us to see the animals. Note: Kruger is massive, so you may go an hour or so without seeing much, but this just adds to the anticipation when a sighting arrives. Also a jacket is recommended in the morning as the combination of no sun and driving in the open vehicle can get a bit chilly even in December.

Again Ed and Wayne are fantastic hosts and our experience would not have been the same without them! Thank you Ed for your recommendation to "On the Rocks" in Cape Town, it was a memorable dinner and so scenic.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel part of this truly special family. Wayne, Edwina and their lovely children are the most wonderful people. The lodge itself was gorgeous; spotlessly clean, spacious and excellent facilities. Our room was very comfortable and the large open plan kitchen dining area really made a really homely feel. The food was superb, I put on at least one dress size, mostly down to the wonderful Lily's amazing desserts! The safari itself was breathtaking, Wayne drove us around Kruger and could spot animals from miles off, and was then able to answer any question we threw at him about them. I would not hesitate to go back or recommend this place to anyone who wants a truly magical safari experience amongst people who make you feel like on of their own,

4 day 'Big 5' experience was absolutely superb - we self drove to the lodge as we were touring SA. From the moment we arrived to departing, we were made to feel part of the family and were looked after by Wayne , Edi and family extremely well - nothing was too much trouble.
Excellent room and food with nice pool area. 2 full day game drives in Kruger ( John our guide was great ) and a sun downers drive were superb.
Good food and good company back at the lodge watching the sun set over Drakensburg Mountains.

Although the leopard remained elusive , this was still a Big 5* experience.

Can't wait to go back again !!

My partner Liam and I had a fantastic stay at the Sunset Lodge, mostly because of how warm and welcoming Wayne, Edwina and their family are. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and we would both highly recommend booking this place for your visit to Kruger Park.

I was beyond grateful that the hosts were also able to accommodate my many dietary requests due to food allergies. They made the effort to prepare me separate meals, which was such a relief and meant I could just focus on enjoying my stay. Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday.

Judging from many of the other reviews, I don't think we stayed at the same place. We never met Edwina and saw Wayne for about 3 minutes on arrival and 5 on departure (mostly settling the bill).

The game drives were the only saving grace of this tour, but it took an hour to get to the park gate and 20 minutes more before the administration was completed and we could actually start the drive.

This was one of the most disappointing trips I have ever had. The accommodations could only be considered luxurious if compared to a two star motel or children"s summer camp. My wife and were put in a room with a broken sink, even though 4 other rooms were unoccupied. My correspondence with Themba, prior to booking, confirmed the following would be provided on our private safari:

• Champagne breakfast on day two and day four

• High Tea on day three

• Guided Nature Walk on day three

• Bottled drinking water on all safari drives

• Binoculars provided for safari game drive

None of these amenities or services were provided. In fact on day three after returning from our game drive around 5 p.m. we were expecting a high tea but instead had to wait until 8:30 pm before dinner was provided, because a new group had arrived and were out on their late viewing drive. The website did not indicate that eating arrangements were to be a group affair at set times, with no alternatives in either seating or choice of food. The website in fact stated that dinner would be served " a la carte".

The accommodation is dated and not well maintained. The pool did not look clean and the upper lounge had a large section in which the floor boards had been torn up and not replaced.

When I wrote to Themba about my concerns, part of the reply was "Perhaps then you should have rather stayed in your own Country and gone to a summer camp?" They concluded by promising to get back to me which they have not done.

As noted, the game drives were good but find another lodge, preferably one inside Kruger Park.

We stayed three nights with the themba package to stay at the sunset lodge. Like the other reviews state this is an amazing place. If you come to South Africa and can only do one thing stay here! We arrived and went straight to the neighbouring private reserve for a night game drive then day 2 Kruger park and day three lion walk with babies and lion cuddles in the near by hotel and the rehabilitation centre. This hotel is very nice and comfortable. The highlight being the family that runs it Edwina and her family really pull out all the stops and give you the most welcoming and warm experience. Traditional South African food and stories by the fire. You are treated like family and nothing is a problem. How can you beat eating dinner by a fire and hearing hyenas in the backyard. When I return to South Africa I will be bringing my extended family here thank you so much for the
amazing experience! aa problem.

Hosts Edwina and Wayne were so welcoming and generous that we didn't want to leave. They truly made the experience worthwhile. Felt like we were an extension of their family. The food was amazing. In particular Edwina's mulva pudding. Loved having dinner outside in front of the fire and lunch on the deck. We really got to see and feel the surroundings in its glory. Our room was beautiful and clean. A beautiful atmosphere to come home to after a long game drives.

Booked Themba Tours for a safari..( will leave a review of Themba) and stayed at this lodge for 3 nights. We had an amazing experience and our hosts Wayne & Ed (Edwina) were so helpful tending to our every need as were their delightful children who were so polite....the dogs were beautiful, seen but not heard.
The food was good and the wine excellent, always served by the wine expert Wayne.
It to me is pointless reiterating good comments - just please believe them. I have no negative things to say....to be met by hosts with ice cold orange, smiling faces, zebras and giraffe in the garden is heaven.
These guys are doing a great job here in this little bit of heaven and undeservedly rate highly🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆
