I must say the two things that stood out the most from our stay at Ngama Tented Safari Lodge, is how friendly the staff are and how well organised the lodge is. Very few accommodation places can say they tick all the boxes when it comes to doing the basics right. Food exceeded our expectations and the wildlife that surrounds the lodge is quite a sight to behold.

Definitely would recommend a break away to Ngama Tented Safari Lodge.

My recent stay at Ngama Tented Safari Lodge was nothing short of perfection. The service, accommodation, food, ambiance, attention to detail was 5 star. The establishment arranged a guided morning walk through the reserve as well as a secluded and romantic picnic spot overlooking a watering hole for lunch. On one of the nights, dinner was served outside our tent in complete privacy and we heard and then saw buck and warthog rustle through he bush. Was amazing! I would most certainly recommend this establishment if you are looking for a complete retreat from the hustle and bustle of our crazy lives. The added advantage is that it is a short drive away from the Orpen Gate going into the Kruger National Park which you could go to for a few hours if you would like.

Well done Devin and Team! Keep up the fantastic service. I am looking forward to my next trip already:)

To say Ngama Tented Safari Loge exceeded all our expectations would be an understatement. Every single bit of detail was amazing, amazing, amazing. From the early morning guided bush walk, to the daily surprise visit from the gorgeous giraffe, to the private picnic, private dinner at the Boma; and not forgetting the consistently delectable meals.

A central lodge surrounded by power and water equipped tented room facilities. The rooms are rustic and that adds to the character! Outstanding staff, great food, and relaxed and friendly facilities. We went for a week and stayed for 10 days! Devin gave us expert guidance around Kruger Park and some of the private reserves, taught us a lot about the animals and their habits, and we got some stunning wildlife photos of the Big 5 and many many more exotic creatures. Best vacation we have ever had, and we will definitely be back!

Blessing and the other ladies made our stay excellent and is because of them that we give 4 stars. So helpful and going the extra mile like making a gorgeous boma dinner even though we were the only guests. The food was delicious and the choices really good. The only down side was the actual tent. Very run down...There is a lot of renovation needed around the property and we can see the effects of covid. We feel that a proper heater and an electric blanket could also assist guests in winter.

What an experience. If you want to take your glamping to the next level then please carry on reading.

On arrival Millicent greeted us with the best smile we have ever seen. And offered us welcome drinks.

Shortly after we were escorted to our tent. It is a place to chill with some extra features, if you know what I mean. Outside shower, bath that can be seen from the bed. Nothing more, nothing less.

Let me tell you where the true experience kicks in. The staff are the most helpful and friendliest we have ever experienced.

The food, my God!! Thank you Nomvulo and Wendy for cooking the best representation of African cuisine. Gordan Ramsey can come learn a thing or two from you. And best part, you can have seconds. The kicker, you get breakfast too!!

Now wait for this, we go on a game drive with Tanya. She has 10 years of ranger experience and boy oh boy does it show. She explained everything from how the soil gets it’s nutrients to termite colonies. How trees can change scent, next moment she started tracking animals and before you know it we were on wild dogs chasing after a leopard with it’s kill.

Not long and she spots a leopard in the thick of the bush, did you read that, we saw a freggin leopard in the 700 hectare camp we sleep in a tent in.

If you are a lover of nature and love the call of an Hyena at 3am, a Bushbaby screaming at midnight, bush buck strolling past while you shower, and monkeys galavanting on your roof then book a stay, and book a game drive with Tanya.

Our stay will not be forgotten thanks Ngama lodge for a damn riveting stay!!!

We stayed here for 3 nights and we wish we hadn't. Their website is a bit misleading. The tents do not look as luxurious as they do in photos. The toilet was dirty and stinking and the door did not close well. The milk pods in the room had expired and the canister the pods were stored in was stinking. There was no clean water flowing in the bath tub taps, it was muddy water. Food wasn't that delicious either. For packed breakfast they gave us a COLD cheese sandwich (no lettuce or tomato nothing), COLD muffin, juice and 1 banana. They don't even have an accessible water cooler and every now and then we had to ask for cold drinking water.
They only had 8 guests to look after. In my opinion they could have easily done better. It was as if they've got their money and they just didn't care about our stay.
On top of all of this we were disheartened to learn that the story they made about a leopard visiting the camp was not true.
I must give them credit for just ONE thing though- they gave us the map for panorama route and suggested we buy a particular guide for self drive in Kruger.
BIG TIME RIP OFF. There are thousands of other places to stay. We say this after staying at 3 other lodges during our 2 week tour around Kruger.

Hi Julie, We are about a 45 min drive from the Orpen gate of Kruger National Park. We do offer full day guided tours of Kruger. These cost R1200.00 per person and include entrance fees and breakfast. If you would like further information please send us an email. Kind Regards, Devin Scott Ngama Tented Safari Lodge

Hi, January will be quite different to September when we were there. South Africa being the flip side of the northern hemisphere, September was their springtime whereas when you’ll be there January is equivalent to USA mid summer so warmest weather. Daytime average maximum 33 c (91 f) and night time minimum 21c (70f ) so shorts and t shirts in the day although early morning game drives at 06.00 will require a fleece as it might be 70f but you will be driving in an open vehicle in a breeze. And as dinner is outdoors it could get a little chilly by 8.00 pm so a pullover or fleece might be needed in the evening. And any rain will be tropical so more likely a short downpour rather than anything long, and usually only once every few days. Footwear, just trainers or light walking boots, even flip flops or sandals for just around camp. Game drives from Ngama were conducted in the neigbouring Thornybush reserve which is a good game area for 4 of the big 5, leopards being the difficult spot, but definitely lions. As you are there for 4 nights I would take at least two morning and two evening drives there. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation centre is a decent project worth supporting and an interesting visit, about 30 mins away by car and takes an hour or so for the walking tour. This can be fitted in during the day between morning and evening drives. Moholoholo have a good website for info, url links links not allowed on T/A reply About the same distance away is the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, like Moholoholo an animal rescue centre. They only run tours twice a day and actually conduct them like a short safari drive around their large compound. We found this a bit ‘canned tourism’ compared to Moholoholo and their times would require missing a morning or evening drive from Ngama. search web Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, links not allowed on T/A reply You don’t mention whether you will be driving yourselves from JNB airport to Ngama or getting a transfer or flying to Hoedspruit. If you are driving yourselves, the Kruger park is easy to self drive around in an ordinary saloon car and is well signposted. The animals aren’t signposted !! and can be difficult to spot but there is something magical about finding them yourselves. It’s about 45 mins/1 hour to the nearest gate, Orpen Gate, and then spend a full day driving within Kruger. The animals are harder to spot and you can get other traffic but it is a worthwhile full day either by yourselves or on an all day guided drive. If you had your own car I would suggest a day around the panorama route. Hoedspruit to Graskop and back will take a full day. I’d avoid the road via Bushbuckridge, not an attractive journey. Really good viewing sites the other way. We drove, but I’m not sure what it would cost to get a driver/guide for this for the day. Its very picturesque but I wouldn’t give up a day game viewing for it. I mean you get great views in the Blue Ridge Mountains or wherever, you don’t get wandering lions and elephants. Sometimes highlights of the panorama route can be done on a drive back to Johannesburg dependant on your flight times. Whether you are just two people or a family, I would suggest you get Ngama to book whatever number of ‘Game Drives in Big Five Reserve’ you choose in advance because these morning and evening game drives are conducted in conjunction with another company they can become fully booked. So on arrival, evening game drive, its got to be done if you are arriving before 2.30 pm. Next day, maybe rest to get over jet lag in the morning with a later visit to Moholoholo and an evening game drive. Following day, morning game drive and maybe endangered species centre or even ....microlighting ( search Hoedspruit microlight, web links not allowed here ) we’ve had a few microlight flights in parts of the world. Not for everyone I know, but scenic and at a small landing strip in Hoedspruit 20 mins away. And still time for another evening drive if you wanted. Elephant back game viewing we've not tried so not sure of the price but it isn't too far away. And a then full day game viewing in Kruger. It isn’t as concentrated a drive as the more private reserves because it’s such a massive area and a day will only cover a small part of the Kruger but it is different. It’s a small world. You are writing from Houston, we’re in the UK but will actually be in Houston next month. Only for a few hours though changing planes to spend a month in El Salvador and Nicaragua. Enjoy South Africa, it’s a wonderful country. If you need and further advice please feel free to ask Best wishes Kevin & Helen
