My family stayed here over Christmas and we have travelled to Cuba several times and this was our first time to Cayo Largo. First impressions of the resort was that it was run down and in some need of TLC. The rooms were clean and the beds were not horrible. Yes, the air conditioning didn’t work great in my room but worked great in my kids room. It was never uncomfortable though. The food was typical of what you would find in Cuba. Towards the end of the week the selection dwindled until they received a shipment. Try the pizza place, so good. Let’s face it, we come to Cuba for the beaches and the beaches here were stunning! We took a taxi to the other beaches as well and chartered a boat to Iguana Island. Cayo Largo is a place to come to relax. If you’re looking for a party, this isn’t the place. I will certainly be returning.

We are a couple in our 30’s who travelled to Cuba and stayed at Hotel Pelicano from December 22nd-29th. We were very disappointed with our experience at this resort. The first 4 days of our trip were a disaster. We did not sleep for 4 days straight because we are people who need fresh air and we couldn’t breathe at night as it was so hot and the AC WAS NOT WORKING. This was completely unacceptable for the price we paid. The staff was very unsympathetic and continuously told us they would fix the AC in the hotel which they failed to do until day 4. Secondly, the WATER COMING OUT OF THE TAP AND SHOWER WAS BROWN the majority of the time. The water also SHUT OFF completely on a few occasions! Moreover, we were NOT LEFT A NEW BOTTLE OF WATER IN OUR ROOM DAILY therefore we had to go around asking the bars to refill our (1) bottle which almost all staff seemed very annoyed by. This was uncomfortable to go through. If you are picky with food, you may have concerns. The food was acceptable but nothing special (95 percent of vegetables were canned for example). Lastly, many staff were nice and helpful and we appreciated their kindness. However, there were also workers we encountered who were unpleasant and unwilling to help. We tipped regularly. Overall, we regretted booking this trip and felt totally ripped off by this place. We wished we never booked Hotel Pelicano and will never return to this resort. PLEASE BEWARE AND KEEP AWAY!

I am an avid traveler to Cuba since 1994, This was my 17th time visiting and my 3rd time in Cayo Largo. I had originally booked Sol Cayo Largo but was told less than 2 weeks prior that it would be closed in November. My travel supplier advised I would be moved to the "sister" hotel Sol Pelicano. I accepted as long as it was a Melia group hotel, I would be fine. My horror when I go there!! It was NO LONGER a Melia hotel. I got there late in the evening around 9:30 and was brought to my room. Upon opening the door I knew something was wrong. It was a sauna. The porter stated to give it some time the air conditioning was just started. By 11 pm I was dying of heat and had tried calling reception every 15 minutes to get absolutely NO RESPONSE!! I then ventured outside to walk back to reception but all the lights on the resort were turned off. It was pitch black. As I was not familiar with the resort, I did not venture out. I continued to call reception all night no to avail. At 5:10am it started getting light and I walked to reception to find NO ONE!! I went behind the desk and then in a office to locate someone. I told them of my situation and said it would be taken care of to go back to my room to wait. 6:30 am again calling down to reception and no answer and no one came to repair. Went back to reception another person was at the desk and I had to explain the situation once again. Suffice it to say it took my Travel representative, me speaking to the manager who did not believe me until I forced him to come to my room which by the way was 37 degrees by their measuring tool. Okay so service began bad and was consistently bad throughout the week. Room cleanliness was sub par. There was a nail in the middle of the bathroom floor that I had to try to avoid when going into the bathroom and using the facilities. The week went by and no one came to repair that. When they finally got to repair the air conditioning, the whole room was covered in black soot including my luggage!! The cleaning team was the only good thing about the resort after that. Did I mention I got NO WATER and had to go beg for it everyday?? THIS WAS NOT WHAT I PAID FOR!! The food was minimal as they ran out of beer by day 2 of my stay ( I don't drink beer but 90% do) and the fish was not fresh but frozen and a staple of rice. Anyhow food is not my main focus. This hotel is completely run down, the service is the worst I've ever experienced in Cuba and I've stayed at B&B in Havana!! Just be ware that this is NO LONGER a Melia group hotel and SERVICE, Amenities, resort, and activities are well below acceptable. I travelled alone and was not allowed to book an a la carte restaurant as I would be taking up a table. Suffice it to say this was discrimination and I was not alone. Many single travelers were signaled out and those that were LGBTQ+ were treated like lepers. So sad in this day and age. I will never go back to that hotel. Cayo Largo has one of the best beaches in this side of the world but I will never accept not being able to get the basic needs one expects when they go on vacation to rest. Beaches are gorgeous and at least I spent 80 % of my time there. Pool was too small for the size of the hotel but I don't use it. Other travelers complained about it. Smoking was allowed everywhere including in the dining hall. So disappointed but as I said BE WARE this is NO LONGER a 4 star hotel as the Melia group NO LONGER owns it.

This was my first time at Hotel Pelicano and it won't be my last. The beach with it's powdered sand and clear blue-green waters was just perfect. The staff are all smiles and always ready to help. The food was amazing! I was warned not to have high expectations about the food, but even the experienced Cuba travelers that were with us were blown away by the quality and quantity of the food. We are returning again in the spring, and will return every year.

This location is just lovely! Have been to Cuba many times and have not been disappointed . Everyone knows that the rating system in Cuba is not equal with other countries so don't try to compare - I am the least pickiest person so anywhere I go, I find the best in that place. The room, food, service were all good. The beach is awesome and can walk till your hearts content. Now for the until........ part - Unfortunately I will not return to this beautiful location. not for any reason of the hotels -4 days into our trip around 5:30pm we were enjoying the ocean being carefree when that all changed. We heard people screaming for help further down. I swam as fast as I could and found a man face down - I turned him over and swam with him to shore - Unfortunately he did not survive - I am only consoled by the memory of watching him and his family have the most joyous day laughing and dancing - you never know how you will react in an emergency, I'm just glad I did my best. To this family I say, my heart breaks for you but know that he had the time of his life that day spent with all of you.

They have a little train that leaves from the hotel. It’s about a ten minute drive...I have never walked it because there is so much Beautiful beach to walk!
