We are here now having the best time, when we realize people complain for the dumbest thing, we realize that this place is heaven. The staff is unbelievable, the beach is impeccable, and the site is in super clean all the time. To anybody who has any questions, please don't hesitate and rightness we will be glad to help you and give you information regarding Sol Cayo Largo
Yes, the beach comes and goes, hurricanes and tides willing. Yes, the walk to Paraiso gets more difficult, we brought rubber beach shoes to cross over the rocks. Yes, they have no croissants or fries or ceiling fans. But this is Cuba, folks! As twice yearly visitors, we watch the gardens grow, (thanks Eduardo) the food getting better,(tuna at las Trinias and whole fish at the buffet and big Langusta tails at the returnee dinner) the live music everyday at the restaurants, the lobby, the bar and the beach, the barmen and room maids, they all treat us as family members. After dinner coffee and drnks at the lobby bar are the single best moments of the day. Perhaps this winter the Pelicano beach was better cleaned and catered, so there is space for improvement at Sol, but we have already booked our vacation in the fall. Thanks to Yagmara and Maité and Daniel and Julio, and Gilian our maid, and all the rest of the staff. And did I mention the bisque?…
So, this island is a tiny desert and has no population. The airport staff and hotel staff and marina staff all live far off on the Island of Youth, itself far south of the big island of Cuba. And so we who love the place have gotten used to passing shortages of everything, from Tonic water to air conditioners to glass panes. And almost all of these shortcomings are offset by the beautiful beach, the constant sun, the gardens, the wildlife and the dedicated staff of Sol. Yes, some of the issues can be blamed on management and mixed priorities, such as the problem of palapas and beach reservations, but on the whole, the experience of staying at the Sol is one which brings us back twice a year, and loving every minute. We had new beach and bathroom towels in December, and we enjoyed all the new upgrades around the hotel with new seating and fresh paint. So we’ll be back in February, we have already booked. Thanks again to Yagmara, Maité, Daniel and Julio at customer service, Yanet and Ania at the Ranchon, Antonio, Mario, and Angel at the bar, and our new friend America. Pat and Dom…

We were there from December 6 to December 20, 2019. The resort overall is quite good. The arrival at the airport was horrendous. That is not the hotel’s fault but you should be aware that if you are flying Transat or Sunwing and landing on a Friday night, the flights will take off from Montreal and land in Cayo Largo just minutes from one another. OK in Montreal but it makes for very long lines waiting to go through the passport control in Cayo Largo. We were on the second plane and we started lining up outside of the building because the lines were so long. The buses had to make multiple trips to the hotels because of all the passengers in the airport at the same time. Now back to the resort. There was a fair amount of beach in front of the Sol and the Pelicano. The surf was quite rough on the yellow flag days and a little rough on the green flag days. The Playa Sirena and Playa Paraiso beaches were much calmer. Note: This was the first time that I saw clothing optional people at Playa Paraiso. It’s not for me and I don’t like being amongst nude people. At the Sol Cayo Largo, they have their own section of the beach and they respect that. At Playa Paraiso, they just setup anywhere they want. We went on the all-day catamaran cruise and stopped at beautiful calm beaches. Those beaches were so stunning, they took my breath away. I recommend this excursion over the other catamaran excursions. There isn’t much of a price difference and you are able to fully enjoy the spots at which the boat stops. The meal is cooked on the boat and is very good. I had a very good room on the ground floor in building 38 however my friend and others we met had some difficulties with their room. Mostly, the air conditioning didn’t work and that made it difficult to sleep. Late in the first week, we saw a delivery of many boxes of new air conditioners outside of buildings, waiting to be installed. Unfortunately, they didn’t get installed to my friend’s room. The resort moved her far from building 38 and the air conditioner didn’t work in that room either. It had a ceiling fan that worked so at least she could sleep at night. The rooms are a little dated but just fine for me. I thoroughly enjoy my balcony but remember to go inside right after the sun sets because the plane that flies over the resorts at that time is spraying for mosquitos. You don’t want to be outside when that happens. It is not like the fogging that they do in other parts of Cuba. In Cayo Largo it is a spray. The food was generally good. Breakfasts were excellent with made to order omelets and usually fresh fruit. Lunches at the Ranchon seemed to be popular but for me, they were just OK. I usually ate at the Snack Bar for lunch. They had great pizza, salad, burgers, panini sandwiches, deep fried fish and other options. The staff in the snack bar was great. The evening a la carte restaurants were very good but I missed my salad. None of the courses offered included a salad. The band Sol Caribe and the gentleman playing the clarinet serenaded you while eating at the a la carte restaurants. My favorite was Sol Caribe because they played traditional and new Cuban music. The lobby bar became very busy from about 6:30 p.m. until the entertainment show started at 9:45 p.m. You were lucky if you found a seat or a table during this time. We started going to the Marimba bar (once called the Karaoke bar) at that time of night because it was less busy and very nice. Note: the lobby bar serves excellent coffee in the mornings. I always chose this coffee over that which was served in the buffet restaurant. With the exception of one evening late in my two weeks at the Sol, the staff at the front desk were very professional and helpful. The shows are very artistic and very different than the average resort shows in Cuba. I really enjoyed the originality. My favorite part of this resort is the band Sol Caribe. Their music is authentically Cuban.…
