First I have to say, that the breakfast is really good. The food is fresh cooked and delicious.
Nevertheless I would'nt stay a second time in this guesthouse because the interior is really old and grubby. There are a lot of things to replace. For example our bedsheets had holes and the bathrobes were yellowed..

The small town Clarence town is touristy in a charming way, and it’s packed with art galleries and B&B’s. Unfortunately for us, all the B&B’s are quite old fashioned. So we had a big problem finding a modern place where the rooms didn’t look like they were designed for 70 year old elegant ladies. Sir Henry’s was the most modern one we could find on the internet. The owner (who by the way was an elderly elegant lady!) was very nice, and she had a dog named Bully who was the size of a small cow. He looked pretty fierce, but had a warm heart. Sir Henry’s are famous for their breakfast, which is very different, and a feast for the eye. It was really beautifully served! First we had our eyes on Caledon Guest House (that you see very often on different internet pages), but we are glad we didn’t go there after having passed their road sign way out on the countryside. It might be a great b&b, but it feels like Clarence is a town where you should stay close to the centre.

We had a very pleasant 1 night stay at Sir Henry's in June. The room was very cosy, with underfloor heating and the nice touch of some sherry to warm you up! An excellent breakfast will set you up for the day exploring the lovely little town of Clarens.

What a little gem. Sir Henry's never fails to impress. Beautifully situated in the sleepy dirt roads of Clarens this guesthouse is magnificent. Hands on owner Ralph makes you feel right at home, beautiful rooms and amazing gardens with breath taking scenery ensure a relaxing stay. The breakfast is something you have to experience!

My wife and I have visited Clarens in the winter for the past four years. We were unable to get a booking at the B&B we usually stay at so we booked at Sir Henry's because four years ago it had ranked as one of the best on tripadvisors list of places to stay in Clarens. It has in recent times dropped down the list of places to stay in Clarens but I did not think much of this. We booked for 4 nights but only stayed for 2. Our host was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was enjoyable but our room was not up to par. We stayed in room 5 (Tranquility)

The furniture was old and weathered, the basin plug leaked, the mattress was old and hollow, the linen tired and worn. The water pipes froze so on our second morning there was no water until 10 in the morning. Our host explained that they have tried many different things to prevent the pipes from freezing but to no avail.

The other rooms looked better than ours but I was not going to take a chance so we found another guest house for out last two nights. Sir Henry's has great potential but is in desperate need of TLC.

So much more than we hoped for. The rooms are very luxurious and stunningly decorated. The breakfast are better than any breakfast meal we've had from any b&b, hotel or restaurant ever!

First of all I must mention that Frank apologized for our bad experience and gave us our stay at half price, but I still would like to give a review. We had room No 4, we were received very friendly by Frank and were told there is the TV and there is underfloor heating, well TV did not work as we are following the PGA golf tournaments, also underfloor heating did not work and the room was freezing. We went out to supper and when we came back we had this shocker of a very cold room, the wood left in the room for the fire did not do much to warm up the room. Apparently the owner who lives in Cape Tow cancelled the DSTV without telling anyone in Clarence, which I think is disgusting. The towels in the bathroom have seen better days surely they can be replaced with new towels, I also have my doubts whether they were clean as the hand towels were damp when we got there and the bath towel had black marks on. The room can definitely do with a coat of paint and electrical wires tidied up, everything seems so old and worn out!! I believe the owner is to blame for all this. The breakfast was very good, but I will not book there again.

Sir Henry's guest house is a gem hidden in the Free State. We had a great time relaxing and soaking in the beautiful surroundings. Rooms are big, classy and cozy. The breakfasts are superb - a must for anyone who likes a good meal to start the day off with. We'll definately return.

For the price - this is one of Claren's more expensive accommodation offerings - I had expected not just a little more, but a lot more.

We came down from Joburg and had decided to pay a premium to be able to enjoy an experience where we had to do little thinking for ourselves, and leave the house packed with just clothes and toiletries and a nice bottle of wine and some cheese etc, to enjoy in the wonderful garden they advertise on their website.

In hindsight I wish I had packed a fridge, good coffee, fresh milk, a plate, some cutlery and a hairdryer, because Sir Henry is not so much a guest house but rather a no-nonsense bed and breakfast. Good bed, delicious breakfast (I'll add fantastic bath in here too), however if you are expecting anything other than that, be weary.

If you had mustered up any ideas of being able to enjoy the garden with a nice cold glass of wine, you won't find a fridge or ice, and you'll be lucky to find the host to help with your request without being made to feel that if you wanted to do that, you should have booked into a self catering unit.

There seems to be one DSTV licence for the entire bed and breakfast (lets not call this a guesthouse) too, so if you like playing war with the tv, flicking back to your preferred channel while the other rooms do the same until one of you gives up, then this is the place for you.

The same goes for the tea and coffee. If you thought you might get fresh milk and decent coffee for the price, you should lower your expectations. Rather know that you will be paying for instant and sachets of Parmalat long life milk.

While the bed was nice, we slept badly because we could hear the other guests through the walls.

"Gracious hospitality and refinement" are certainly not Sir Henry's keynotes ...

What an amazing weekend. Our host was so friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious with spectacular views. Food was Master Chef quality so be prepared to add a few kilos... Home from home. Highly recommended. Thanks so much for a weekend we'll never forget! Ruth and Carl Woodland
