We were welcomed at the entrance by Maya who was very attentive and even stored our bicycles in a safe garage.
We chose the Mona Lisa suite which offered a private roof balcony accessible by a winding staircase. We enjoyed looking at the stars on a clear night.
The service from all the staff was exceptional and we would recommend IL Castello for any occasion.
Thank you for a wonderful time.

This is a truly delightful hotel in the perfect location overlooking Clarens and within walking distance of the town and many hiking trails.

There is nothing not to like here; the food is delicious (breakfast on our stunning terrace every day!) prepared by an extremely friendly and considerate chef, rooms and beds very comfortable, good wifi, hot water and great water pressure.

During normal times I imagine a G&T on the terrace watching the sun set over the valley looking towards the Golden Gate Highlands national park would be perfect.

Saving the best for last.....the staff. To a man and woman they are delightful, helpful, courteous and thoughtful. A quick response to any request and usually no request required; they've already thought of it! We truly feel we have made some friends.

If you are visiting Clarens, there is simply nowhere else to stay!

We stayed in the Lucca (spelling?) room; this is apparently the 2nd best room (best is Mona Lisa with it's own roof terrace). Lucca was fantastic with 2 terraces (one of which sun drenched for breakfast) and the other which gives access to the larger communal terrace.

5 stars all around, thank you to you all.

What a surprise, we arrived are a long drive and could not believe the perfection of both the hotel and its location. We would have expected to pay 5-10 times what we did for the same type of hotel in the UK. The lady on reception who in our minds resembled a young Whoopie Goldberg liked to check that our stay was as perfect as possible. Dinner in the restaurant was fantastic with good quality reasonably priced wine, as was breakfast – but without the wine.

We have just spent the most glorious weekend at Il Castello, a mere 4 hour drive from Johannesburg ,in the little town of Clarens, Free State. This boutique hotel rates amongst the highest anywhere in the world. We had the Mona Lisa suite with not one but two private balconies ( the top one having its's own access via spiral staircase within the room). The view of the gardens below and Mt Horeb was breathtaking.
We had booked a couples treatment in the Spa which was perfect and worked out well as it was raining and we didn't venture out of our room afterwards but chose to settle down in the wing back chairs in the fluffy gowns provided by the spa.
We did leave the hotel on the second night for dinner at Clementine's, and the extra added value that Il Castello offers, is a free shuttle service to wherever you wish to go in the village. Miya the driver was waiting outside the restaurant for us when we called to collect us.as the hotel is only 1 km from the restaurant.
Do yourself a favour ........ Take some time out to relax in this perfect setting and experience the service, gardens rooms and most definitely the spas

After 500m over a very rough road we arrived at Il Costello near the top of the hill overlooking Clarens. We were welcomed by the friendly staff before being shown to our room, El Amber. It was small. Barely enough room to walk round the end of the double bed. It would have been more suited to being a single room. The diappointments continued with a series of niggling problems, each on their own not so important but cumulatively a problem.
We went to the terrace for G & T only to find that there was no normal tonic, only pink or blue variety. As it was cool we left the terrace but there was no lounge to sit in only lounge chairs in open areas. Dinner was fine except that the pepper sauce with my rib-eye steak had little or no pepper in it.
The kettle in the room would not switch off. There was a tissue from a previous resident between the cupboard and the wall.
At breakfast the scrambled egg with capers and smoked salmon was heavy on capers and light on smoked salmon. The toast was white bread not brown as requested. The coffee from the machine in the bedroom was far superior to that in the restaurant.
Management has to look at training of staff and attention to detail.
Not a 4 star boutique hotel in my book.

My wife and I stayed here on a road trip to celebrate our 52nd wedding anniversary.. We had to phone for directions and to our astonishment, a car driven by the helpful and highly efficient Miya met us on our way to escort us to the hotel. This was the first instance of outstanding service which we received from, among others, Mariette, Jeff, Tarzan, Mieke and Hope. We did not meet the chefs but the food was delicious. Our room, on the first floor, had two balconies looking out onto the lovely scenery of Clarens and was beautifully appointed and most comfortable. The only downside to this brilliant lodge is the number of steps which could be a problem for those less mobile,as there is no elevator, but the staff are so helpful, this need not be a problem. We have travelled the world and Il Castello ranks among the best. There is a Tuscan feel about the place. Very highly recommended.

Service was excellent and adequate staff to look after all guests, really enjoyed their shuttle service taking us to our restaurant and collecting us at night so we could enjoy a few glasses of wine without worrying to drive. Really clean with amazing views. Breakfast was great.

We visited here for a short two night stay for my Birthday.

Upon arrival the staff was really friendly and helped us quickly to settle everything and was up to our room. We had the Mona Lisa room. They put balloons which was awesome and made us feel special.

The room was big with a sitting area, big bathroom and own private roof terrace with an amazing view over clarens and the mountain. The Bed was comfortable and clean.

While we were there they were busy building which was really unpleasant. They started early in the morning right below us which really was so loud and we could not use the terrace as people constantly walked up past it and made such a noise.

The food was good at the hotel- big selection of breakfast which you can dine in room as we did. The first morning the breakfast was on time but second morning it was 45 mins late which I feel is unacceptable. Don’t offer the service if you know you are short staffed for example.

The dinner we had at the hotel was good food. My wife had the lamb shank but it was the smalles lamb shank I have ever seen and my steak was a bit overcooked but still had a very nice flavour at least.

All in all not a bad stay. Really beautiful and as an added bonus the hotel has a free shuttle service which was really amazing to use to the restaurant the one evening.

Thank you very much to a wonderful Team, yes - Team Castello.

We had a wonderful Easter weekend at your premises.

All of us (my husband, myself and our 3 kids) enjoyed every moment of our stay at your establishment.

Thank you for your warm welcome, we were treated like royalties.

Our rooms were always clean and tidy. Keep up the good work. A free shuttle services was a cherry on top and the gentleman (Mr. Miya) was always on time transporting us around Clarens.

We took countless family pictures in your well maintained garden with breathtaking mountain views and those will be memories to cherish for the longest time.

We also enjoyed freshly prepared breakfast and dinner.

Expect to see this family of 5 in the future.

Stay well Team Castello.

Rakgadi Moses and family from Bloemfontein.

Such friendly service where nothing is too much to ask. We were greeted with a welcome drink and bags were carried to our beautifull rooms. We stayed in a 2-bedroom unit each with en-suite bathroom and a shared living room. We enjoyed a couples massage at the spa situated in the hotel. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the hotel and dined at the restaurants in town. Enjoyed a short 1.2 km stroll into Clarens on the Friday morning. Would recommend a stay at this beautiful establishment any day. Our car was parked securely at night and we were also given space for our bicycles to be kept safe.
