We have been going to Sunnyside for a while. A lovely homely guest farm. The room had under floor heating and electric blankets on the bed. The day after we arrived there was snow on the Maluti mountains. These comforts were welcomed. Beautiful surrounds with walks into the mountains. The best is if you arrive on a Sunday for lunch. This is held next to the river. You are spoilt with a braai. It is a short drive into Clarens. If you like the old fashioned guest farm. This is it. Beautiful.
My family have known Sunnyside for the last 50 years. You cannot ask for a more old world place to shake off the city dust. Forget the world and come find peace for your soul. Lovely food served at your table by amazing staff. Rates are so affordable and all meals are included. Alwaysa winner in my opinion.
Wow. Good old style hospitality and charm. Wholesome farm food beautiful views stunning walks, great tennis, family games in the lounge, morning and afternoon teas, close to Golden gate and Clarens. It was a perfect time away with the family.
My wife has been going to Sunnyside Guest Farm for the past 14 years. I have been going at least once per year for 5 years. Ann Boland is the Master Mind behind the Guest Farm. She has been running it for over 40 years. People that have complained about service and facilities need to go to a five star establishment and pay three times the price to satisfy their eccentric demands. Sunnyside guest farm has become a Mecca for Artists. Pierneef and a number of other famous artists spend ages there painting the beautiful scenery. Richard Rennie, (unfortunately he passed away last year) started an Art week there 25 years ago. Ann now hosts about 7 Art weeks every year. Even overseas Artists have discovered the gem and are hosting their workshops there. Facilities are not luxury. They are comfortable and totally satisfactory. The food is excellent. The fee includes 3 three-course (at least) meals per day as well as morning tea/coffee brought to your room in the morning, morning tea, afternoon tea and on request more at 9:00pm. The staff has been there for many years. Many are not fluent in English, so seem to be grumpy, but they are always helpful. Until a year ago there was no internet connection or email address for the facility. The farm telephone line could not handle it. Ann is not computer literate. Her receipts are hand written. Any external correspondence was done on a Typewriter and posted at the Post Office in Clarens. This Post Office has closed, so Bethlehem is now the closest Post Office. Fortunately her Grand Daughter-in-law now handles her email. Get away form the Rat Race. Cell phone reception is only reasonable at certain spots if you are lucky to find one. (A lot better last year). There is no television available and internet reception on your phone or laptop is dependent on the Cell phone signal. They have added electric blankets on the beds and a recent addition is underfloor heating in most of the rooms. You can choose a cottage that can house the family. Children can swim, (in summer only. Brrrr!) Children will love the dogs, geese, sheep, cattle and donkeys. There are lovely walks to the river and up the mountain. It was the starting point of the serious Angels Wing hiking trail. It has tennis courts and a beautiful Bowling Green. The Artists paint in the Bowling Green Clubhouse. Just decide to leave the world behind. Turn the clock back 40 years and enjoy an absolutely amazing experience at Sunnyside.…
We have just returned from Sunnyside Guest Farm. What a treat. We loved that there wasn't a tv in the bedroom - or anywhere else for that matter - forced relaxation. Also no wifi. It was full of old world charm. Nothing fancy! Best hot cross buns and banana bread. Also, wonderful easter egg hunt... Old world traditions at meal times which are normally forgotten. Three course meals...we just loved being there. We understand why families just keep going back year after year.
Was last at Sunnyside 30 years ago. This was my favorite childhood holiday destination so I was a bit apprehensive that I would be disappointed, but I'm happy to report it was not the case. The owner Mrs Boland was still there after 60 years, she is an amazing woman and her homely influence was still evident in the home cooked hearty meals and overall atmosphere. If you are looking for first world bling you are going to be disappointed. Cell phone reception is sketchy at best and the rooms are straight out of the 70's or 80's in terms of furnishings. For a REALLY relaxing and soul refreshing break this is the place. Don't forget to book for the famous Sunday Braai by the river.
If you want TVs, and all mod cons, read no further. Sunnyside Guest Farm has been run as a guest farm by the same owners for the last 57 years and by the previous owners for approx 27 years. If your soul is crying out for old fashioned charm, hospitality, peace and tranquility among the mountains, this could be the place for you.The day, starts with tea being brought to your cottage on a tray. Freshly baked eats for afternoon tea, and simple but delicious meals. Amazing walks, and mountain climbing, tennis, swimming, bowls, table tennis and more on offer. The tourist hype of Clarens, Fouriesburg and cherry picking in Ficksburg are all with in easy driving distance.I look forward to returning before too long.
Wonderful, old fashioned, family holiday. There were 13 of us, ages ranging from 5 to 85. Comfortable warm rooms, plenty of hot water, delicious food, and lots to do. No TV and intermittent wifi meant an abundance of family talk time. Highly recommended!
Staying at Sunnyside was an absolute dream. The farm exudes hospitality and warmth. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and the rooms are very cosy! I would definitely recommend taking a walk along the dirt roads or hiking up one of the mountains. The view from the top is breathtaking!
Staying at Sunnyside Farm reminded me of staying with my grandmother when i was young. The solid wood, classic furniture in the rooms and main house, the early morning tea, afternoon tea, and good old fashioned, traditional, simple meals were wonderful. The staff are polite and helpful. Sunnyside Farm doesn't promise flashy comfort. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the food delicious. They do what they do excellently and well done to them! I will be coming to visit again. It was also good to get a complete break from television and internet:) We came on an 'art weekend' and Sunnyside Farm is close to Clarens town, and also allowed us to set up and paint around the house.
