We arrived at Bergwoning Adventures at 11am hoping to either quad bike or horseride. We were told by the young lady that both were unavailable and that the quads would be back at around 12. When we asked if we should return at 12, she looked confused and said "no - that may run into lunchtime". We then asked WHEN we should come back and she said 2pm would be the best time (we should arrive 10 mins earlier).

She wrote our name and number in a book and we killed time for three hours until 13:50. By this time, the kids couldn't wait to get going having anticipated the "adventure" since the morning. Alas, there were no quad bikes to be seen and when we enquired, the same lady told us that another group was out with the bikes and we would have to wait another 30 mins or so (but this was just a guess!). When asked why she had not called us to advise the unexplained change in timing, she said she did not have our number, which we then pointed out to her in her redundant reservations book! She was also completely unconcerned not even offering an apology!

We then left choosing not to have any further dealings with what is obviously an unprofessional and disorganised operation. In effect, a whole day of our precious holiday was ruined as instead of waiting around, we could have gone to any of the other adventures companies in the area!

Stayed at their Mayfly house. It was very good for a person new to the camping and outdoor experience. Nice landscape view from the hut. Good for budget as well . The overall stay was good and met really good people in the area.

Beautiful campsite with green lawns, large trees, a small dam - completely surrounded by mountains. Serene setting for the perfect getaway. Sadly, the ablution facilities are extremely basic and some shower stalls were not usable. Doors cannot be locked, which compromises privacy. If these facilities are improved, this place would be a five star campsite.

The 4x4 route is said to be grade 2/3 and safe to travel alone (only one vehicle). However, we found a very challenging obstacle which we did not feel should be tried without a second vehicle to give assistance if required. A group of two cars followed us up this obstacle and the second car had to be towed up the incline - very risky to advise drivers to go it alone...

We booked 2 campsites over Easter weekend 2013 and what a disaster. On their website it says, and I quote "Maximum of 50 people allowed". The kids tried to count all the people and stopped at 89 while there were at least 27 caravans, tents, trailers, etc. Once you've pitched your tent, do not think that you will be able to move anywhere with your car unless you park it at the entrance of the camp. We camped right at the back (only using 1 campsite although we booked 2) and had to walk through and under tent awnings and gazebos of other people sitting there to get to the DIRTY ablutions. Oh, and did I mention either cold water or piping hot water in the showers? Be very careful to visit this place over peak periods as it seems that they just squeeze as many in as they can. I'm sure it is a different story out of season and you have some space....

We booked 2 nights at Bergwoning’s Stonefly Hut (the rondavel) for us and our 2 small dogs.

Although recommended by casual acquaintances that stayed there a few years back, I tried to find reviews on the internet but nothing turned up. Only scenic photos of the location with the various accommodation buildings turned up.

Upon arrival at reception only a kitchen lady was available. Barely speaking English and waved us irritated in the general direction of a mountain after giving us the keys. The keys were to the wrong accommodation so we walked in to find other guests’ luggage. Aghhh.. back up the car over more bad dirt road and chase up after the correct keys. Half an hour after arriving eventually we reached Stonefly Hut.

While the surrounding mountains are beautiful, Bergwoning’s accommodation is shocking. Yes – the place is small, but you expect that from a rondavel up on a mountain. What you don’t expect is the front wooden door that’s so badly damaged that won’t open or close without putting your shoulder into it. Turns out the door cannot even lock. The furnishings all look like they have been turned down by charity shops. The open-plan ‘bathroom’ is behind the bed: tiny shower and toilet and the smallest of sinks that doesn’t even have taps fitted (copper pipes with switches do the job). The bedding, towels etc. were decades old.

Now, all this could be expected if you were paying backpacker accommodation rates. For R600 a night it’s plain unacceptable though. To put it into perspective, the alternate accommodation we managed to secure right away (thankfully!!) was a large 3 bedroom house, with garden, garage, just off Clarens town square. It cost us R650 a night. It’s a pity we were too upset and in too much a hurry to get out of there that we forgot to take photos of Bergwoning.

On a positive note, Clarens is a dream destination if you are travelling with your pets. The town is dog mad and even the restaurants and art galleries welcome them. “Dogs also need to appreciate art” is one of the answers I got from a gallery owner when asking permission to bring them in.

Good evening,

What a beautiful place with so much potential but what absolutely disgusting ablution facilities. When we arrived there on the Saturday there was no signs to say where we must go to. I send a sms to find out got no reply and eventually phoned. We were told we can pitch our tent anywhere. The owners only came to see what was going on Monday afternoon.. There were 4 showers one with a curtain the rest were open which led to the floor being wet all the time. I just want to know if the owners will be prepared to use the facilities they offer the people staying there. Won't see me again despite the beauty of the place.

Made our booking in advanced, paid deposit and sent proof of payment. Also received confirmation that the booking was made. Upon arrival the lady at reception had zero info about us or our booking, however requested us to pay the remainder of our bill immediately. We did so and was directed to our hut, Mayfly, next to Stayfly. When we reached the hut, the owner was showing the two huts to somebody else, who then decided to switch his booking to Mayfly. Zero regard to us, and the owner simply explained that there is no difference between the two huts and we will enjoy it there “the lady just needs to finish cleaning, because it is very dusty inside”. This was an hour after actual check-in time. We decided to let it go and took a stroll to explore the beautiful surroundings. When we got back the room was left open, the cleaning lady gone. As we started unpacking I noticed dust coming up from all the surfaces and then decided to inspect a little further.

It was disgusting.

Dust EVERYWHERE, sticky dust on surfaces like the fridge, the kettle, gooey substance in the rusted microwave, mold and stuff inside the fridge, plates inside the cupboard was sticky and dirty and old food still stuck to the cutlery.

I had to phone 5times before the phone was answered when I finally got hold of the lady who did the booking who promised they will sort everything out immediately. A few minutes later the owner came with a cleaning lady and a replacement microwave. I felt relief and thought they were going to sort everything out for us, however this was not the case. A pathetic excuse “the lady whos responsible for the bookings never told us you were coming, that is why the place is still dirty” and instructions asking me to supervise the cleaning lady and also check-up on the quality of her work was just a slap in the face. I mean really, this is obviously the LAST thing i want to do on my few days away from work. 3.5 hours later, sitting outside the hut, zero followup from the owner or bookings lady trying to make the situation more comfortable for us, the cleaning lady stepped out. Said she was finished and left. Still no followup, nothing!!!

This is not to mention the odd, student hand-me-down cutlery (only one steak knife) for a 4-sleeper, a tiny side-line braai, no designated braai area or adequate place to sit outside. Come rainy days, you will not braai!!! No braai utensils nothing. They advertise self-catering however i didn’t knew i had to pack my whole kitchen. Another false advertising is the gas stove/oven... no, this is one of those student ovens with the hot plates on top; and the turndown resembling my “then boyfriend’s” bachelor student flat was an added concern. Bedding old!!! No wine glasses, plastic KFC plates, chipped cups etc. Come night the curtains mean nothing keeping out the light and the old mattress definitely needs replacement. Also, the oven kept going on and off during the night and had to unpug at the wall. A bit dodgy and dirty sticky plugs... GROSS!!!

I feel like these owner of this business has zero regard for the fact that we are paying customers needing some quality break-away time and really does not care about our wellbeing. The main concern is doing the bare minimum!!!

I can see on other reviews that the owner of this business mainly think of excuses without really doing anything about the situation. My only recommendation for this place is, continue looking somewhere else to stay. They accept full payment for a service half-delivered and can’t own up to it.

Dirty dirty dirty!!!!
Insufficient self-catering equipment
Poor furnishing
Bad night’s rest
Zero customer service

My positive is lots of minimum input potential with beautiful setting.

We visited Bergwoning 4 years ago and were impressed but was terribly disappointed upon visiting them this past weekend. There is nothing left of the previously beautiful kept gardens around the reception area / house. At the reception area/house there use to be a large area with rabbits, meerkatte, goats, sheep, chickens ect. which was very entertaining to the smaller children but now there is nothing. The road (gravel) at Bergwoning also leading to the accomodation/caravan park is accessable by offroad vehicles only because of the poor condition of it. We stayed in Crowther House. There is a photo of it on the website. On the website it can still be viewed with the outside wooden deck surrounding a part of the house and the house appearing to be well maintained. The wooden deck is gone and the house requires some serious maintenance and cleaning. The deck was removed and the marks it left on the outside walls upon removal were not covered with paint. The house inside and outside reflects a lot of cracks and paintwork pealing off. Material of the dining rooms chairs is torn leaving the inside spunge visible. The wooden staircase and kitchen cupboards that used to be shiney and attractive appears dull, dusty and in need of maintenance. The sitting/dining room area and upper deck area of the house has a very high thatched roof. It seems that when the house was not accomocated birds must have been inside as the bird pooh is visibly running from the top windows down onto the wall and very large/old spider webs is very visible on the higher walls. The fridge in the kitchen was filthy inside and out, the glasses were found dirty in the cupboards before we used it, the wooden table and chairs by the outside braai area can be used for firewood as it is in such a bad condition. The house overall was not dusted. The shower upstairs had only hot water, something was wrong with the cold water supply. In the shower downstairs the shower caddys that is suppose to be mounted on the shower wall was lying on the shower floor, the tablecloth on the dining room table was discoloured and torn. Some of the curtains were torn and required repair. Quading is advertised as an acitivity. We took our own quad bikes and drove to the area across the road where the quad bikes are allowed to be operated. Upon return the owner Thys approached us in a unproffessional/rude manner informing that we are making dust and noise - yet quading is one of the facilities available at Bergwoning. Previously the unit was cleaned every day (washing dishes, floors and making beds) irrelevant of which day of the week it was. This service is no longer available. The bed linene was clean and the floors was washed and that is it. No flowers, no little chocolates, no little soaps or anything to make the guests feel welcome. We were 8 people staying for the weekend at R300 per person per night and booked 2 months in advance. There is no T.V. facilities but we did not have a problem with that. I only mention it to state that for the price paid, a well maintained and clean living space is not to much to ask for. We took people with as our guests and was embarressed to bring them to this accommodation. We were very disappointed as Bergwoning is situated in the mountains with breathtaking views and close to Clarence which is a town definitely worth visiting.

We live in the city, we never get the chance to see the mountains I planned to go with my lady to visit Clarens. We decided to take the scenic route via Harrismith. Goldengate was just stunning such rich colours and so close. We booked our stay with Bergwoning, it was so relaxing staying out in Mickeys Finn and everyone was so friendly.Next we had a great breakfast in Clarens and walked around the shops very unique! , I can say my lady was happy about the homemade jam.
I would suggest the beautiful area to people who need a break in natural beauty , We really enjoyed ourselves!

The camping site is very nice. Limited stands. Very quiet on the side of a dam. I have stayed here about 3-4 times

So why am I rating the place so poorly?
The ablutions are primitive. The owner keeps on promising to improve them but hasn't done a thing. This time round the just felt dirty and slimy.

Great site, poor facilities

"The hut has 2 double beds, but the 2nd bed is a bit difficult to get to as it is built on a platform and the ladder has no support on the sides. I would also not get to the hut too late at night due to it being a farm road with no lighting."
