We were a bit taken aback by the dirt road to get there - this is not for a normal vehicle and it is advised that you use an SUV or double cab to use the road to get to the castle (it is a dirt road of about 5 km and very bumpy and daunting.) We had been informed by the hosts on email that we could order breakfast and dinner and that this would be delivered to the castle. Upon arriving we called the host, Wimpie, to order meals and we were informed that they would not be providing meals anymore because of COVID. Wimpie was very rude and failed to understand that she, herself had made that undertaking in her email confirming our booking (which had been sent a month before our stay) and should have thus informed us that these were no longer provided and that we should thus carry enough food. The thought of driving that horrible road in the evening to get dinner was daunting and so our trip started with us having to make do with the little bit of food that we luckily had carried with us. The castle itself was beautiful although coming from the city it can get a little bit spooky to stay in a whole castle alone and we didn't sleep very well. The second day of stay it rained and once again we couldn't leave the castle because the dirt road was muddy and our car would have definitely gotten stuck in the mud if we attempted to go and get food. We called around and nobody delivers to the castle so our second day was spent basically starving as we did not carry much food due to the fact that we had been advised that our breakfast and dinner would be delivered to the castle. Safe to say we will not be going back.

This was the perfect escape we needed from the reality of 2020. As you drive up to the castle walls, the excitement is childlike. The castle is more than we expected with 3 flights of stairs, a Game of thrones inspired Fireplace, kitchen with carafe of sherry, beautiful designed staircase, chandeliers, massive oil paintings, comfy bed with unbeatable views of the Maluti mountain landscape. The top bedroom has an incredible tub bath with endless views. Outside the kitchen the doors open onto a patio with indoor braai ... Sunset corner is incredible to sit, reflect and sip on sherry. I dont think there is anywhere else I know of that you can hire out an entire castle to yourself. Thank you for the magic !!!

The Castle in Clarens was really very pretty. Every thing was decorated in true fairy tale style. My only recommendation would be to have some fans/aircons installed, as it was very hot inside and made it difficult to sleep.

What a fantastic gem tucked away in the most beautiful scenic space, overlooking the mountains and gorges. The castle's attention to detail is too much to take in in the short space we have been there and takes you back to another time. We chose to have breakfast and dinner on site and it was absolutely delicious! We will definitely go again. A must see!
