De Molen Farm is located in the valley between Clarens and the Golden Gate Highlands National Park on the R712. De Molen is in the Rooiberg Mountains of the Eastern Free State. Seven kilometres of the Little Caledon River runs through the farm.

The farm was established in 1872. The farm buildings and four self-catering cottages, fully furnished and equipped, are found only a few hundred metres from the tarred main road.

De Molen is a working farm where maize is planted. A stud of Ngunis and some sheep are also part of the farm.

The farm has much to see and also offers river fishing on a strictly catch and release basis. Barbless hooks. It is a natural system and that is the reason the owners are so protective over this natural resource.

There are walks to the cave and a picnic area next to the Little Caledon River. The cave has stunning views of the valley. Two waterfalls and a natural pool are near the cottages.

On arriving at the farm, we were welcomed to De Molen by the doggies Bentley and Tessa. The Milkshed, one of the four cottages, was booked for our year-end function for a group of twelve persons.

The Milkshed was renovated and is not a milk shed anymore. It is actually now used for accommodating families or groups of friends. It has two bedrooms and a sunroom, which also has bunkbeds for two children.

We used the living and dining area for the function, and the braai for celebrating the year-end, was on the open veranda where some large umbrellas were used for shade.

The Milkshed has a fully equipped kitchen with all necessary utensils and amenities available, making it ideal for catering for small or large groups.

Lin & Brian Tucker run a lovely tranquil B& B a few kilometers outside of town towards Golden Gate. It is a working farm with a large herd of stud Nguni as well as sheep . It has a trout stream and beautiful walks through the veld & up to sandstone buttresses

On our three months tour of South Africa we stayed in numerous self-catering establishments. At R1500 per night, the was the most expensive but the third lest luxurious. The decor was very dated. No Tv or Air-conditioner. The host and hostess were very friendly and helpful but clearly pushed the price because of Clarens’ popularity. In my view this is unfounded because we had far superior cottages in Cape Town, Franchhoek, Stellenbosch, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna etc, all at lower prices.

There are a lot better places to stay in the area with a lot more comfort and luxury
There is still a huge crack in the lounge wall stuffed with plastic bags to stop the wind coming in. There is no Wi-Fi as advertised and the fishing is very poor.
In my 30 years experience I have never seen fish that big that are posted on the Facebook page come out of a small river like that
Some of the pictures are not even the same river on the farm and none of the people are tagged only posts by the farm.
There was up to 10 hours a day load shedding with no backup plan for cooking so you will be eating out a lot.

We had a wonderful stay at De Molen Farm, Lin & Brian must be the most hospitable hosts we've ever had! We thoroughly enjoyed out stay at the farm. Beautiful place, clean & tidy cottage with all you need. Hosts even helped us book a table for dinner for hubby's bday - great recommendation at Clementine's. Beautiful place, great hospitality, friendly - we will definitely be back. Nicky & Andrew Morkel

We had a wonderful stay at De Molen Guest farm. Brian and Lin, our hosts were kind, accommodating and very helpful. The farm has an amazing cave hou can hike to (quite a steep walk) ... and Guiness, the sheepdog stole our hearts. A homely, warm place to stay .... great fireplace!
