Every now and then you stumble upon a place that is so magical and enchanting that upon its discovery you wonder why has it taken you so long to find it and then you want to keep the secret all to yourself.

But then around a fire with a clear stary night providing a backdrop that one just does not find in cities and with just the crackle of the fire, a call of a barn owl, the chirps of crickets and the creaks of the nearby windmill as company, you realize that to sustain places like these, you need to share the secret. Such a place is Witmos Oxwagon Camp, situated between Cookhouse, Cradock and Somerset East.

After having stayed at two establishments before Witmos, that were not quite to the expectations after seeing them online, we were rather hesistant. The road to the camp is not suitable for low clearance cars, especially after the recent rains, but what awaits you is an escape to a magical place where your soul is refeshed.

To our surprise, we had the entire camp to ourselves, which also meant that we had the entire loaf of freshly baked "plaasbrood" to ourselves. Lighting and the fridge are powered by solar and there is Wi-Fi (but we considered it as to be only usee for emergencies as there is no cell phone reception). Hot water is provided by a donkey and you just need to remember to keep adding logs to allow you to have that warm shower.

The communal bathrooms are as with the rest of the camp, clean, neat and tidy. A lounge area has its own fireplace and a large dining room table has room for 14 guests (the capacity of the camp). The kitchen has a gas stove, woodburning stove and fridge / freezer. All cutlery and crockery is provided. Outside is a lovely boma area with fire pit and braai area.

You will just need to bring your own food, however lamb chops, a variety of wors (I can reccomened the kaaswors) and vension can be purchased from the farm by prior arrangement.

But the stars of the show are the ± 200 year old oxwagons, restored and altered to provide 7 seperate bedrooms. Each wagon sleeps two people and have been recently upgraded extensively. This is certainly glamping with carpeted interiors, insulated tenting, super comfortable matresses and cozy duzets.

Being about 2km from the farm house, the absence of any human noises can be rather eerie, especially when the wind blows through the kloof.

This would be perfect for a group of friends who want to get away from the madness that is everyday life and have your soul rejuvinated.

The most beautiful places are usually off the beaten track, including this one. We (two couples) travelled here in a simple hire car. The road to the camp turned out to be a bit of an adventure, but it was manageable with a little driving skill. Shortly before our stay, we were sent detailed directions, as the camp is located "in the middle of nowhere". We reported in as agreed when we left the main road. We needed a little more time to get there because of a few photo stops, but Coetzee (the owner) was already coming towards us to check that everything was OK. He accompanied us the rest of the way to the camp. He gave us a very warm welcome - we hadn't experienced such genuine hospitality for a long time! To our surprise, we had the entire camp to ourselves, including the freshly baked, still warm bread on the beautifully laid table. We were really blown away by the loving and cosy decor of the entire camp. Everything had been thought of and left nothing to be desired. Power supply via solar, cooking etc. with gas or fire, even Wifi is freely available (there is no mobile phone network).
Due to the rainy and windy weather, we were even allowed to barbecue in the large fireplace in the communal room. There was even plenty of firewood available.
Temperatures around freezing point were forecast for the night and we were a little worried that it wouldn't be too cold in the Oxwagon. We were pleasantly surprised! The wagons have light insulation and thick, cosy duvets - we slept really well. As the camp is located "in the middle of nowhere", it is very quiet, only the animals and the wind can be heard. If the cloud cover allowed it, we could catch a glimpse of the fabulous starry sky. On our departure, we didn't manage to drive up the steep incline from the camp in the hire car. Coetzee quickly came to the rescue and drove the car out without any problems. Unfortunately, we had only booked one night and our travel plans took us further afield. We would have liked to stay longer to enjoy the peace and quiet and explore the surrounding area.
So if you are looking for peace, nature, rusticity and hospitality, this is the place for you.

As well as being a delightfully different experience because of the unique sleeping accommodation, Witmos is idea for a mixed interest group. The hike over the ridge gave spectacular views, 51 bird species were logged, there is flat walking or biking, a reservoir to cool off in and an amply equipped kitchen and living room with plenty of hot water: nobody had to wait for a shower! Our hosts Anton and Katrina were very attentive to our comfort. This was a wonderful weekend!

We were a group of friends invited to spend the weekend at the oxwagon camp. If you like rustic with the experience of an authentic ox wagon then this will be an experience for you! The facilities are clean and well equipped and the farm itself is beautiful. Do yourself a favour and come and stay, we were a group of 19 people and had a fantastic time!!

What a retreat! Enjoyed every moment - making new friends and wonderful memories. Food was excellent. Coetzee is a star of a host.
The best place to go if you really want to rest and be close to nature. The whole experience is as close as you could get to the oxwagon days... Only this time it is in style!

Perfect retreat getaway
Amazing Home Made Bread, Butter and Jam on arrival was a nice touch.
All facilities was 1st class and obviously spending the night in a Oxwagon takes you back to days long past Coetzee was an amazing host.

A challenging path to get there, but it was worth it. Great hosts, a fantastically beautiful, rustic accommodation. Unfortunately we only spent one night there, but it was worth it. Highly recommended if you like peace, nature and seclusion.
