We found the proprietors very helpful. Lovely old building Bed Room was very comfortable and nice bedding. Breakfast probably one of the best on our 4 week trip. The gardens carefully cared for. Our night stopover was so relaxing could have stayed longer

My wife and I stayed at Somerset House in Mid December 2014, having read some rave reviews on 'Trip Advisor'. None of the comments exaggerated about the excellence of this superb B and B. The welcome from Vega van Niekerk was warm and genuine, and we were shown to a delightful suite looking onto the garden. We were then given afternoon tea after which we met Stephen Van Niekerk. We soon discovered that we had mutual friends so the conversation flowed freely. They do not serve dinner, but they had very kindly arranged for janet to cook us Springbok loin. In the two weeks we were away, we ate out at several restaurants, but this was by far the best meal we had. In the morning, we were served a delicious breakfast, and Vega then directed us to the fascinating Battiss museum. If we are ever fortunate enough to visit Somerset East, this is where will stay. It needs 6 stars.

The english language does't have words to describe this place....."Sommer Lekker"
I arrived to a warm welcome - (and I only booked it an hour before I arrived) was shown around, and then sat down with Stephen before the fire with some wine and a lovely home cooked chicken and ox-tongue meal prepared by Vega followed by an outstanding South African Gorgonzola with figs........
It snowed the following morning at the house - 1st time in 70 years apparently - in town - that is......and we had the local press guy Riaan visit us to take photos, truly wonderful scenes, and the breakfasts were wonderful too - and I had porridge with whiskey.....mmmm
I can heartily recommend this little gem in the heart of the Eastern Cape, well worth coming too - as an ex-Eastern Kaapie, now living in the UK, it was truly home from home - well done Stephen and Vega, Steve our conversations in front of the fire are very memorable it was great hearing about the old days and the new ones! Sala Gahle!

As part of a group of travellers, we booked lunch here and wished we could stay longer. A stunning house, beautiful antique furniture, elegantly decorated and a gorgeous garden. The meal was one of the best we had in South Africa, with definitely the best Melva pudding. Thank you Vega for your warm hospitality.

This is a lovely home with excellent hosts. Stephen and Vega made us feel so welcome from the moment we booked in. Our rooms were elegant , catering to our every whim. Underfloor heating, electric blankets, a carafe of sherry etc . The public areas are beautifully appointed and the winter sun warming the spacious back verandah makes for a perfect place to read or just 'be' Breakfast was beautifully presented and most delicious. Stephen and Vega are enthusiastic about their home and about Somerset East in general and their stories made for great fireside chats in their gracious living room. We shall return!

What a gem in a beautiful town. Stayed here for one night for business. The house was renovated in 2003 and decorated with period furniture, ornaments, etc. Large rooms with high ceilings and air conditioned which helped on this warm summer day . Only negative comment LCD TV a bit small with limited channels to view. Breakfast served around big communal table and was brilliant. Do yourself a favour and spend the extra money, you will not regret it.

This a truly a beautiful place. The house itself is so interesting, decorated with beautiful antiques and interesting pieces. The staff is friendly, warm and so gracious. The location of this house is also something special. Located in a historic street and at the foot of the mountain. It is just so beautiful.

Thank you for a wonderful stay!

The accommodation at this excellent B&B is first class with only 4 rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
Furnished in period style this building has a history as a factory and school before being diligently converted to a B&B by Vega and her husband.
The meals were outstanding and we in a party of 7 had a delicious 3 course dinner there cooked by their chef Janet and excellent English breakfasts..
The garden is typically Somerset East with rolling lawn and abundant local roses, irises, valerians and many more.
An absolute delight to stay there looked after with wonderful hospitality.
I can only recommend it .

If you are in this part of the Eastern Cape do your self a massive favor and book to stay here! Vega knows how to spoil her guests. We were given a wonderful welcome cup of team on arrival and made to feel so at home. The dinner was a true delight, do book it with Vega a few days before you arrive, you will not be sorry! The rooms are large with wonderful appointments. Vega is also a mine of information and she will make sure your stay in the area will be fantastic! She knows everyone!! Will I be back. I cant wait to get back!

My husband and I have stayed with Vega and Steven for my husbands 30th a few years ago but went to have breakfast on the veranda the other day - it was a beautiful day and sitting on her "stoep" as we call a veranda is a blessing. You have the most magnificent view of the Bosberg mountains and the ambiance is colonial yet modern too. Her food was 5star and we even had a choice of salmon poached egg or Somerset house breakfast. Absolutely stunning. Coffee was really good and we stayed and chatted for a few hours.
Really worth every cent.
