Apart from the lovely view that the hotel offers, everything else was pretty average.. The staff were more interested in each other's company than helping out their guests.. Breakfast staff Ignore you when u ask for butter, and tell you to make your own toast, once they have already brought you the hot breakfast which consists of 2 eggs, a cold piece of ham, a mini heavily processed vienna and a tomatoe.. The pool guy threw heaps of chlorine and chemicals into the pool at 9.45am when I ask him to hold on for a bit so that I can have a quick swim before my 10am departure. He refused and said it's his cleaning time and we must wait till later, mmmm they need to learn a lot about service in this place. The receptionist was probably the best of them all, although we had to sit around waiting for the computers to come online when trying to check in.. Our room was small and the basin was cracked right through. The changeroom toilet seat was also chipped, which prevented me from sitting on it. My patio door could not lock due to misalignment and forced a chair against it to try secure it for the night. The on site parking advertised which we reserved when booking, was actually on street parking, although I did see a guard on duty. I tried to use the free paddle skis, but because I only had a credit card and not enough physical cash on me for a breakage deposit my daughter and I were unable to go paddling. If you're interested in using the kayaks be sure to bring R1000 cash per person...
Ps. The beach area was awesome...

through a toll gate over Maputo bridge, the road (via Google Maps) leads you to a dusty meander of dirt road (if wet, is a nightmare without an SUV), for about 20min which would make anyone second guess their decision of booking at Gallery Hotel, but as the road ends and you see your destination on the right, you're still not convinced, until you step in. From the moment you exit the car, the security guard ensures you're parked well for your stay. The reception and service is hospitable, local, and professional. The authentic look of the building already makes you forget the dirt road travelled. A small gallery of rememberance to Samora Micheal helps you understand the importance of this icon and freedom fighter. A welcoming drinks helps from the heat, but adds to the pleasant invite. A sea side upgrade is always welcomed, as your balcony is no stranger to crashing waves, and shaded palm trees. Sandra, Nelson, and Julio, took personal care and interest in our banter and questions about the hotel and surrounds. An excellent, mouth watering, and well priced menu had us in the Marisol restaurant every night. The hotel courtyard is set up in a way that evokes community and sense of privacy. Should you find yourself in Maputo district, this gem on the other side +-40min away is work the stay. I'd rate it 6stars. Aasief and Zureenah, Cape Town, South Africa

Excellent hotel in a beautiful environment. We slept in a very spacious suite with a kitchen equipped with a big American-style fridge, a huge flatscreen Smart Tv. The hotel is located at the beach and has a beautiful baia- restaurant in the sea. The hotel also has an excellent restaurant where you can get delicious grilled fish and good meat. The personnel is really friendly and helpful. The wifi is good, you can stream Netflix without any problems. The terrace offers a beautiful view of Maputo city, which is beautifully illuminated at night. The sunrise is a moment not to miss and offers very “instagrammable” pictures. In general I loved my stay there and I will definitely go back!

I stayed with 4 friends in one of the penthouses, which has a spacious kitchen and living room. The huge balcony is a great place to enjoy the view of the beach as well as Maputo Bay and the skyline. One of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen! The resort has a unique style that gives it a cozy atmosphere. Combined with the great staff and especially the funny bartender, we felt right at home! On top, the Marisol Restaurant in the hotel serves a delicious breakfast and the best seafood I've ever tasted. I highly recommend the king prawns and the seafood pasta!
I really love this place and hope to come back soon to see the new bar in the sea!

Excellent restaurant, friendly and very helpful staff. This is a 3 star hotel and so not all ammenities are available (some rooms are a bit cramped for example), but the overall impression is exceptional. And the views across the Bay to the City are unique. The bridge across the Bay of Maputo has made this hotel much more accessible. We noticed a lot of people came in for the dinners. However, we spent Christmas there and the hotel had a wide selection of guests including families from Maputo. When locals are clients you can be assured that the venue is great. The restaurant had a good choice of food - although we concentrated on the seafood of which Mozambique is famous.

The pillows are NOT the fluffiest things Ive ever seen, flat pillows.
The staff are more interested in each other than helping people.
The bathroom is disgusting and dirty, moldy toilet, rusty shower-head and basin. dirty towels with skid marks and floor stains. Water supply in shower is also bad.

Dirty carpets and bad floors, TV does not switch on. There are even cracks in the wall?

We had to to wait a whole 50 minutes for the receptionist.

Overall bad service and no respect. Its so shocking how at a business u do not understand english.. English is the business language and i feel it is mandatory for all workers to be able to speak and understand english, especially in a hotel or physical service type of business.

2/5 because the beach looked good.
overall best time was the departure tine

A friend and I spent a night at this hotel and it was wonderful. A short ferry ride from downtown mozambique (costs about US 0.15) and a world of difference.

The Hotel will pick you up from the ferry stop and treat you very well. The beach was realatively safe which was a huge improvement over the beaches in Maputo that have an awful reputation.

But be prepared to feel "stuck" there. There is nothing around. There is no where to walk to except along the beach. So if you choose to go to Catembe, you are choosing a relaxing vacation. But have no fear, the on site restaurant is excellent.

best location for a hotel right on the beach and a superb view of maputo . staff tried very hard to please but are let down by management. no water in rooms for 2 days and no explanation from management and no offer of complimentary bottle water. they consistently run out of basic items.
avoid this hotel at all cost until new management and owner are in place.

Booked on the basis of good reviews, especially concerning the ambience and location. Certainly, the place has a lovely location with a stunning view of the Maputo skyline (as long as you don't mind the 30-40 mins to get over to Dar), and has been beautifully designed. The staff are friendly, even obliging. However, the place is completely let down by the attention to detail. Our airport pickup didn't show up, and when we reached the hotel there was a shrug, saying our systems are down so we couldn't do anything about it. We reached the ferry dock and called for a pickup - the chap on the phone told us 5 mins, and 25 mins later, no-one arrived. I called again to be told 'oh, he's just leaving now', and another 10 mins wait. The first room we were shown to had broken electricity sockets, broken toilet, broken safe, broken taps and a drawing on the wall of an air disaster and lots of graves (perhaps the one of historic importance that killed Samora, but still...). The second room also had a broken safe, toilet issues, no pillow cases, and damaged sockets, but we had had enough unpacking by then. Our dinner order came to our room with 2 errors. The bill was all messed up, as our expenses were mixed up with someone else's so we got half of ours and half of theirs. The driver to take us to the ferry when checking out turned up late.. etc etc etc... Certainly, they could do with a really good manager to take charge and kick butts... All in all, this would be forgivable if it was a family-run B&B or pension, but for USD150/night-plus, there can be no excuses....

I was here on work/vacation for a week in January, and I ended up staying the weekend at Catembe Gallery hotel, which is just outside the city on the other side of the bay.

This place is a unique and lovely experience, which is well worth it if you don't need to be exactly in the city center. Catembe Gallery Hotel is a small resort, with an outdoor restaurant, pool, and a beautiful bar that juts out into the ocean--overlooking the Maputo skyline. The staff are friendly, extremely accommodating, and trustworthy.

Travelers on a budget should know that Maputo is extraordinarily expensive in terms of hotels and taxis. Compared to all the other comparable hotels in the city, this place is a bargain at around US$90 a night. (The next cheapest place we found, the Monte Carlo, was approximately US$150/night.) Moreover, the rooms and ambience are far superior to those of the other hotels we saw, with good air conditioning, nice decor, and balconies overlooking the beach.

You get there via a ferry boat (5 meticais, or about 10 cents US), which runs about every fifteen minutes from the main dock in the city and takes about 15 minutes to cross the bay, and then you catch a van to take you the remaining 3km to the hotel. (You have to pay for the van, but the hotel will send it to meet your boat at the dock.) I moved into the city during the week because I had to catch interviews all day in various neighborhoods throughout Maputo and needed to be able to get back and forth from my hotel quickly, but if you're here on vacation--or want a weekend getaway--I'd highly recommend Catembe Gallery Hotel as a nicer and cheaper alternative to what you will find within the city.

Dear Cristian, we are 80 km from the Lebombo border and it is a good tollroad. Till December you will have to take the ferry in downtown Maputo to us, which will take 20 minutes crossing and a further 3,5 km to our hotel which is very possible with a small car. Currently they are making a paved road that stops at our hotel and one can already use it.
