It is beautiful and peaceful. Every detail has been well thought out and so many clever details. The views are breathtaking. We enjoyed the fresh organic produce, furniture is locally made, it is environmentally friendly. Its a great place to go relax.

It's hard to find the words to describe what Shumata Camp is. Shumata was our Home for two days in february and we will never forget it. From the beginning of our arrival, warm welcome with cup of Tee we felt like at home.
Throughout the camp you feel like you're in a movie. We came in Shumata Camp after our Safari in Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti...and this was the Highlight from our Safari, especially because of our guide Mr. Mokili Olesokoi. He has extended our Safari Trip in High Performance way, it was just amazing to hear everything what he had to show and say about this beautiful area in Arusha.
My wife and I felt like we were in a National Geographic documentary with the best Guide ever. Mokili answered all of our questions and woke up our interest in nature even more. I strongly recommend Safari Tour with real naturalist and specialist Mr. Mokili
I congratulate Shumata Camp for providing such a guide as Mokili.
I have also to praise the food in Shumata, it was an unforgettable experience, and we salute to chief of Restaurant.
You can't forget the people in this camp, starting with the supervisor and all the Service, they were just amazing. Above all, we would emphasize Simon, he made our stay in Shumata so special and we will never forget it. Thank you Simon once again.
Because All of this reasons we highly recomend Shumata Camp and can not wait to come again.
Thank you so much

We’ve stayed two nights. This camp was our last stop before continuing to Zanzibar. The view is absolutely uatched by any of the other camps. The sundowner on top of the hill was even one of our hilights. The manager, Lazaro and his crew were very friendly and helpful. Great job!
Unfortunately, we had to move to another room as there was an issue they could not solve. We had as well several problems with the new tent, too.

Stayed in this tent camp in Northern Tanzania for 2 days October 26 - 27, 2012. The site and the camp are really special. Located on Masai land near Mount Kilimanjaro. Shu'mata in Masai language "Ma" means something like "above the clouds" or "heaven".
Rooms are beautifully designed with a lot of Masai artwork, lots of space, large beds. Our front "window" had beautiful view of valley. These tents are not your usual camping tents, they are solid structures, specially made stone floor, designed furniture, flush toilet, shower with hot water. Shower especially cool - there is no roof, just the blue sky. Tents are far apart with good privacy.
Sitting and dinning tent is huge exotic space with comfortable chairs, beautiful lamps, artwork and of course there is outside sitting with incredible views.
Food was very good, excellent service. Most of employees are Masai, traditionally dressed, always friendly and ready for a chat.
I am a grumpy guy, but I must say this is truly once in a lifetime experience.

The best part of this camp by far is the view. In no other place I have been you are surrounded by breathtaking views. Three big mountains surround the camp, including Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. The camp was very nice and the food was adequate. We were the only guests at the time, so it felt a little secluded. The staff was very nice and mostly of Masai heritage. All in all, the camp was very nice.

Shu'mata means Heaven and it does perfect justice to it's name... It is far away from any towns, on top of a hill with 360 degress of breathtaking views, which include mount Kilimanjaro. Peter our guide was just the best guide ever! He was so passionate, good fun, knowledgeble and calm, he introduced us to birding, which we now absolutely love! He thought us a lot about the animals, trees and the Masai culture.
The entire camp is very tastefully decorated, it is very unique and has loads of great books to read about the Masai and Africa in general. I fell in love with the outdoor bathroom, it is just so beautiful, with lots of curves and nooks.
The camp is surrounded by Masai bomas and we got a chance to go visiting them, ask questions and observe, it was an wonderful experience! We also got to go on a walk with a Masai men who told us about the trees around them, how they use them, how they keep clean, their diet, etc, he even made me a traditional Masai toothbrush!
Shu'mata was our first stop in Tanzania and what a welcome! We saw no other tourists at all, and it was so special to have some of our meals in the bush, just us, the elephants, zebras and baboons! Which was amazing when compared to the dozens of other cars you see in other parts of Tanzania!
We loved staying at Shu'Mata.

Shumata is one of those places that makes you feel welcome and in a very special place before you even step into reception. Perched on a hill with commanding views of the Sinya Plains and Kilimanjaro…the views are just iconically African and downright mesmerising. A line-up of smiling happy faces and willing hands ensured that our weary bodies after a long day’s drive took the rest they deserved, whilst perfumed moist clothes were offered to wipe off the sweat and dust from the drive, and a refreshing welcome drink to cool down and was down the dust in your mouth. I had not yet sat down for the introductory briefing and my eyes were frantically scanning my immediate surrounds blissfully relishing the incredibly tasteful décor of the mess tent. By now I had missed half the welcoming introduction and my brain was racing trying to figure out how to swap around our booking so as to stay at least one more night at this place…for Shumata had already become love at first sight, and its more-ish nature had gotten a steadfast grip on me. As it turns out we did manage to swap the booking and stayed an extra night, and Shumata became indeed the highlight accommodation venue of our trip. Hosted by , we felt as if we were visiting a friend at her home and paradise. The staff was delightful and incredibly helpful. The food was DELICIOUS and the candle lit meals and comfort provided by the dining mess and a grand selection of wines!! nurtured some amazing conversations that lingered deep into the night. The rooms cannot get enough praise, every corner is spiced up with an amazing piece of antique paraphernalia from the old bygone safari days. From the charming verandah, to the main sleeping area and the incredible bathrooms, everything is special, unique, chic galore and unbelievably tastefully done…tis a work of love, and indeed you will end up loving it. I mean what beats waking up in your bed with a steaming cup of coffee and with a sunrise lifting next to snow capped Kilimanjaro?. The activities were most inetersting and informative, great for birding, some game and plenty culture, Masai and cows to meet along the way. Night drives can be arranged and proved to be most successful…highly recommended.
This is not a place I want to re-visit….this is a place I could stay and live forever!

We stayed at Shu'mata in the end of August on our round-trip of Tanzania and Zanzibar. Arriving there was a special experience already: Our driver and guide picked us up, and informed us that we were starting our game drive right away. We weren't prepared for this but the Shu'mata team had prepared very well, we got some scarves to protect from the dust and off we went into an absolutely amazing scenery, Kilimanjaro, Meru, loads of animals and nobody but us three and our guide. Upon arriving at Shu'mata we were greeted by our wonderful host Claire, who introduced us to the heavenly (Shu'mata means heaven in Massai) camp. The location on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere and the staff let us feel like in heaven from the very first second. We were accompanied to our tents, which were as beautiful as one can imagine beauty to be. We three shared one tent, and still there was more than enough space for us to really enjoy this setting. Looking out one "window" you could see wild animals, looking out the front "door" we had a direct view of Kilimanjaro, not just a glimpse. Afterwards we had a lovely lunch, and Claire let us know, what we were able to do. It's a pity there is so much to do at Shu'mata, when you only stay there for two days. The offered activities include game drives, also night game drives, a visit to a boma, walking safaris. We did all of these, and it was wonderful. Although I regret not having spent more time in the camp as the atmosphere was awesome, Claire and everyone else did everything to make us feel comfortable and part of a family. The only difference to a real family was that we weren't allowed to do the chores, before we even thought about something they fulfilled our wishes: the sundowner on top of the hill, breakfast in the bush, early morning tea to watch sunrise and KIlimanjaro.
Thank you everyone, especially Annelies and Claire, as well as the other staff and our guide who accompanied us to Hatari, whose names I do not dare write, as I am convinced my spelling of Massai names will end up in a disaster, for this heavenly experience. Shu'mata certainly is a gem.

This was a lovely secluded camp in the middle of the Maasai lands with fantastic views of Kilimanjaro. The staff was wonderful and we particularly enjoyed visiting with our hosts and the other guests during dinner. The food was excellent. This camp offers a more individual and personal introduction to the culture and lives of the Maasai people. Our guide Mokili was wonderful. He worked hard to cater our visit to our interests and was very open with knowledge and information. A fantastic start to our honeymoon!
