Here we are in the western cape and what do we find but a little bit of the Mediterranean courtesy of expatriate Frenchman Laurant. He took over a Victorian house and converted it to a very comfortable guest house in a stunning garden where he and Precious turn on an outstanding evening including great dinner by the fireside. There are dogs a plenty including two Great Danes but they add to the ambience. It's a little tricky to find as the is no sign posting for the street or the guest house. Take the last street on the right before crossing the bridge when entering town from the west and watch out for the metal door/gate on the left.

We visited Couvaloup on our trip to South Afrika this month. To keep a long story short: 'It was a breath of fresh air' after busy (but beautiful) Cape Town. In only 1,5 hours drive we found ourselves in a little paradise where Laurant and 'manager of the house' Precious gave us a warm welcome. The dinners on the veranda are perfect, the room was a beauty and we had a great time at the pool. Actually was everything perfect! Small reminder (in addition to some earlier comments): you do have to love (and be good with) dogs as they are the burglar alarm system of the house 😉. They are however very friendly and they listen very well. They were of no problem for us anyway.

Need peace and quiet?: go there!

My wife and I spent 2 nights at Couvaloup recently while travelling along the West Coast of the Cape. The house is beautiful, in a wonderful location and is well decorated. There is a lovely pool area with a view of the town. The bedroom we stayed in was clean but you unfortunately have to share the sitting room, chairs and eating areas with 5 dogs (3 of them Great Danes) which made these areas dirty. If you do not allow dogs into your own home this is not the place for you.

It has great potential, we had a pleasant stay but not great value for money.

Couvaloup is a treat for all the senses, the house itself is a beauty, the rooms are beautifully decorated, the pool is glorious, the host charming. I have stayed on a few occasions, winter and summer, and each season has its own delights- roaring fire and reading through the owners collection of fabulous decor magazines in winter, the azure swimming pool and lounging lazily in summer. The garden is wonderful, and if you can manage to tear yourself away from Couvaloup there is the sleepy village of Hopefield to explore which has a beautiful church at its centre. I hope to keep visiting Couvaloup regularly!

Always follow your Heart and Discover Magical Places&People....This is how I discovered Couvaloup and the owner Laurent. Two of my Girlfriends & I needed a Getaway in the country and I became fixated on Hopefield, so after googling Hopefield Accommodation came across Couvaloup, the wonderful photos on the website dont quite do the Reality of its Charm, Peace and Beauty justice. We Fell in love with its Eclectic and Bohemian Spirit. Surrounded by Nature's Beauty, Big Trees, lots of plants and Birdsong. Laurent was a Wonderful Host and his 6 dogs soon became our friends. Our Rooms were Clean and Neat and done up with its own unique charm and character, each with its own theme. We had such a Wonderful stay and look forward to visiting again!

The Very best stay in South Africa. Laurent is such a wonderful and friendly host. The rooms are beautiful designed and each of them in a personal style. The breakfast and dinner is also superb made with the base picked from his own garden.
Love the location, the beauty, friendlyness and his lovely dogs.

I spent a weekend at the magical Couvaloup in April. The house is a delight with beautiful rooms, comfortable beds, excellent linen, and amazing quirky pieces of art around the house. The food was amazing and the I received so much attention from Laurent and his lovely staff ensuring I had the most relaxing and wonderful weekend. The grounds and pool add to making this a truly special getaway. Can't wait til I can return!

I had the best time at couvaloup , it s a beautiful setting all the rooms are beautiful with great taste and all beds are very comfortable.
we travelled with all the family from Paris , 2 adults and 2 teenagers , and enjoyed relaxing by the pool or in the house resting and reading . There is also a beautiful garden . You can take the breakfast outside under the veranda which is lovely .
Laurent is a perfect host , makes you feel at home , the staff is perfect . you can also eat in the house for dinner which is nice too .
And there are great places to visit nearby , you have the natural reserve and the village itself has a lovely market and super coffee shop with the best carrot cake ! Laurent will organize for you trips and restaurants nearby .
I would recommend it for anyone who wants to travel to Cap town and this area .
Go ! you won't regret it .

I took my two children both under 11 and really not knowing much at all about this gem. Upon my arrival Laurent, handsome French man and his beautiful dog welcomed us and within minutes I was totally lost in this incredible oasis of calm.
We stayed 10 days and I think about this place each day wondering when I might be able to return. Style and a hint of the Med make this place one of the most desirable places I have yet to stay. Thank you Laurent.
