We had the family room with 2 bedrooms. Everything was very comfortable and cozy, and we loved our stay here. The owner is a wonderful cook - our breakfasts and suppers were delicious. This was a great place for us to use as home base for kite-surfing in Langebaan and exploring the other things to do in the area. Lovely part of the country! We hope to come back to experience the Saturday market. Many thanks!

We absolutely loved it. So happy we found this absolute jewel in the Weskus. We have told all our friends and will be back soon. Classy, comfortable, warm and when I had breakfast, I felt like I was in a coffee shop in Italy.

Ulrich, or Ula as we got to know him is the finest host anyone could wish for. The retreat is a gem, offering a wonderful mixture of country living along with modern luxury. From the bed with its luxurious linen, duvet and pillows which we wanted to take all home with us, to the wonderful culinary skills of Ula, to the soft and perfectly suited piped music, to the exquisite coffee maker on the large bar counter (which had been extensively used for other beverages the night before), our group of 10 left very reluctantly for home after a wonderful stay.

We will be back !

Thanks Ula

We spent 3 days at The Merry Widow. Our room was huge and comfortable with a sprawling 4 poster bed. We were treated by the owner to amazing breakfast with very good coffee, delicious dinners and dessert. Merry Widow has a few interesting long term guests and we really enjoyed sitting around the dining area and talking and drinking wine with all the guests. We took our two small dogs and everyone was accommodating with them.

Lovely accommodation in a tranquil setting. Perfect to explore the West Coast from here. Not the place to go if you prefer the lights and buzz of city life. Find this a perfect break away from Cape Town and the market on Saturday mornings is just a must, good local fresh produce and mingle with the friendly locals

What a wonderful and friendly stay at The merry Widow. We left feeling like we were leaving friends and family behind. Ulrich and the Hopefield community are really something special and it was an honour to have been a part of it. The Saturday Mill Country Fair gives you a wonderful community feel and the produce on sale is top quality.

Once entering the guest house you are amazed by the décor and the preservation and restoration of the old true west coast building style. The house and rooms are beautifully done and a real get away from the city. the host Ulrich is living the house and surroundings, a very pleasant and very accommodative person. he surely has a wealth of knowledge and very intelligent interaction. do enquire about the local organic produce. what a place!!!

I would definitely recommend this retreat as a good hide away and time out retreat...

We could write pages and pages about this incredible place but the rooms are huge, clean, comfortable and filled with amazing furniture and decor, the food is home-made, healthy and delicious, and the whole place is just charming, peaceful and very relaxing. Our host, Ulrich, joined us around the fire he built for us and shared his interesting stories. This is a very special place within a short drive from Langebaan.

We arrived at The Merry Widow having driven all day down the West Coast, first impressions from the front of the Guest house is that it looks a little tired, but PLEASE don't be put off ..... Turn into the driveway and you are in a little oasis, neatly kept and beautiful gardens, with lavender lined pathways to the three very spacious rooms. The Moroccan Room is a beautifully furnished and huge bedroom with deep rich red walls, a comfortable brass queen size bed, an ensuite shower room and furniture and fittings in a Moroccan style. There is a family room with a double bed and two singles in a joining room with a shared ensuite shower room. The stone cottage houses a large bedroom with king size bed, ensuite shower room, lounge and dining areas. We stayed with our twin girls and our friends who also had teenage children, The Owner, Ulrich couldn't do enough for us, we booked all three rooms for five nights over New Year. He arranged a pool party for us complete with foaming pool for New Years Eve, dinner each night was a delicious home cooked feast, varying from lamb, fish and beef. breakfast each day was fresh fruit, home made yoghurt, not to mention his milk shakes and frothy cappuccinos, he even packed us a fabulous picnic and sent us off to Kraal Baai for the day, giving us route advice and lending us a gazebo. If you are looking for restful, affordable accommodation where service and hospitality is key, then you certainly won't be disappointed.
