#1 of 7 B&Bs / Inns in Dhigurah Island
2021 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Boutique Beach is designed, built and run by Romney Drury, a British diver, who loved this area so much, she gave up her job in the UK to be able to offer divers a wonderful experience for a much more economical price than previously possible in resort diving. The hotel offers 6 spacious, private rooms, 1 main restaurant and 1 roof top restaurant along with a very own Diving center with NITROX and whole range of excursions and opportunities to enjoy the natural Maldivian environment. Boutique Beach is located on Dhigurah which is in the famous whale shark area in the south Ari Atoll. The British Whale Shark conservation group, who are also based on Dhigurah, have recorded 268 whale sharks in our area, of which only 8 are female. Average length is 5.92m which makes them "teenagers." The whale sharks are there all year around, but some weather conditions makes them harder to spot. Mantas regularly feed in our lagoon as well as the famous cleaning station at Rangali which within easy reach. There are 15 deep reefs or Thilas in between Dhigurah and the next island. The famous Kudarah Thila is just 10 minutes away. Our PADI Dive Team will be happy to show you the best diving in the Maldives. We have a PADI instructor and a dive guide available on board together with a speedboat for smaller groups and further dive destinations. Our Dive center is the only place on the island where we have NITROX available.

The slogan you see entering the hotel is “do it with passion or not at all”. Believe us, this place is all about passion for diving and opening up to one another. We didn’t trust all the positive comments but don’t hesitate on this one, all of them are correct. This place has a drive. If you come here with a smile and a passion for diving, you’ll get 100 times more in return. Afzal arranges everything for you which means there are no surprises in what you agree to pay and pay at the end. All the extras are mentioned so you’re can calculate everything beforehand. We didn’t pay anything else then 1 bill at the end of our stay. So this is really “dive now, work later”. The staff makes you feel like you’re at home with caring friends or family. They pay attention to detail and to everything needed for your experience there. The diving was truly AMAZING. From reef hook diving into divesites with current full of fish and some nice reef sharks to actually seeing a whale shark + manta while snorkeling and diving on the same day. You can see dolphins from the boat as well almost every day. If you’re interested in the smaller stuff you’ll be very happy as well. The island has really exotic looks, the beach in front of the hotel is something unique, especially at sunset times. The hotel organises lunch and dinner there sometimes. Talking about food is subjective, but here are some facts: - variety of dishes (international, Indian, maldivian…) - fresh food (fresh fish cought in the morning - fruits and vegetables they grow) - very tasty cooking style and enough in quantities The rooms are pixel perfect clean, large, comfortable and the outside shower is fantastic. Diving guides and instructors invest a lot into their guests well-being and are very experienced. They will meet your needs and safety always first from the beginner diver to the more experienced ones. Big up to Mette who is a wonderful and passionate teacher. Laura evolved ten times faster thanks to her dedication and high standards. Hope to dive together again Mette. Romney, the owner of the place is the roots of a very well oiled machine. We came not knowing what to expect and left as friends, it doesn’t get any better if you want the real deal. Local, eco friendly, sustainable, humanely rich tourism at a location that needs to be preserved for its biodiversity and beauty. Again, thanks guys for ALL the amazing moments and we hope to seeing you again asap. Laura and Tom

I just returned last night from nine days of the most amazing dive vacation in the history of the universe. Hotel: BB is a contemporary ‘boutique’ hotel totally dedicated to diving offering a stylish absolutely unique service. There are only six gorgeous rooms in the main house, with a few supplementary rooms adjacent if needed. Meals are on the glamorous outdoor roof deck or on the beach (weather permitting) or in the first floor dining room. After the first day I was pretty sure I went to the wrong place. "Diving” hotels are ‘never’ this stylish and I was sure I had been taken to some exotic ‘foodie’ place for epicures. The cuisine was varied and always excellent. Dishes ranged from Maldevian, Indian, and Sri Lanken, to fish ‘n chips to Italian to steak and potatoes. Fresh local juices and incredible artisanal deserts with every meal. Best curry dishes ever, and much of the food comes from the garden behind the hotel. Afzal, the hotel’s GM, asked about any preferences or allergies before arrival. The rooms are very spacious, have a heavenly bed, abundant wardrobe space, and a bathroom open to the heavens, truly a wonder post-dive HOT shower treat. Dinner my first night was followed by a birthday cake as Afzal must have noted my birthday from the PADI medical form. And an even bigger surprise, my bed was decorated with ‘happy birthday’ spelled out in flowers and palm frauds. I was feeling quite undeservedly special. The style is all-inclusive of three meals, juices and drinks, two daily dives, and wifi. There is no alcohol as this is a ‘local’ island in an Islamic country. No worries since serious divers shouldn’t be drinking alcohol anyway. And yes, there are hammocks on the beach. Secret Sauce: What really sets BB off from ‘typical’ or even high-end diving destinations is the passion enthusiasm and dedication of the staff, although better to just think of them as my new diving besties. The owner Romney Drury was on every trip. She founded BB as much to indulge her passion as an excellent business opportunity. Special props go to Divemaster and my guide Mette. She is a ‘retired’ IT expert from Denmark and oozes enthusiasm for diving. She’s a life-size Ariel [Little Mermaid] who’s on a first-name basis with all the critters. She would prepare the boat in the morning, conduct thorough briefings, be first in and last out of the water, and then prepare a Jacques Cousteau quality video summarizing each day of diving for each evening’s briefing. A German couple who signed on just for snorkeling was so infected with all this passion that they promptly signed up for the basic course, which Mette was teaching after dinner. Various PADI ‘merit badges’ are also available. Diving: Well this IS the Maldives, but the diving FAR exceeded expectations. Whale sharks, yes indeed (seen here year round), on three of the dives. We swam along with one during the first encounter for five minutes, a heart-pounding life-changing experience. Half of the dives had turtles, sharks of various species, octopuses, dolphins (for snorkeling). Mette and Captain Shahid selected the dive sites based upon weather and sea conditions. These varied quite a bit with rain and wind the first few days and sparkling blue skies the last few. The rain was actually somewhat welcome in lieu of a blistering summer sun. The dives were ‘drift’ style although the current was mild, so the snorkelers could be easily accommodated. Each dive site was different, ranging from inside to outside the lagoon’s fringing reef, pinnacles (thilas) and seamounts in the channel, and sloping near-verticle walls. Even though there were only 2-4 divers we went to the ‘best’ and even the ‘secret’ sites, and on one long excursion up north to Manta Gardens. And yes, Mette ‘found’ the amazing giant mantas, an entire school of graceful ballet just overhead. Again, a jaw-dropping life-changing experience on both dives that day. How many times have we all read about amazing dives in the magazines and heard stories only to be disappointed on our actual vacation. Just the opposite with BB, delivered more than ‘promised’ anticipated or expected. It was indeed rather charming to watch Romney and Mette get so excited over the major and rare critters as if they too were seeing them for the first time. Actually, they could identify the whale sharks ‘by name’ from their familiar markings. Mette got rather obsessed over some of the critters that were she saw less frequently, e.g. long-nosed seahorse, zebra moray (followed as it twisted through the reef for five minutes), yellow boxfish, juvenile sweetlips, jobfish, and (apparently quite rare) robust ghost pipefish, a school a mobula rays, which would figure prominently in the evening’s video. She one-handed her GoPro Hero 9, always at the ready. Note that the law applicable to diving in the Maldives is rather strict, limiting basic certification to a depth of 20m. and time to 60 minutes. Suggest filling out the PADI dive medical questionnaire and getting a doctor’s sign-off if needed (e.g. I’m over 45) and sending in advance to save some time. Nitrox was included for those with EAN certificates. BB is very much a safety-first operation. We would return to the boat at the end of 60 minutes by inflating a ‘sausage’ to summon the boat. Captain Shahid and Mate Shohag were ready to provide any and all assistance on and off the boat and with equipment as needed. Covid: BB was totally Covid ‘qualified,’ with temperature checks twice daily and all of the staff living inside a ‘bubble.’ Mask wearing was required in the small village. Afzal arranged a PCR test needed for return to the US. BB thoughtfully includes a Covid insurance policy for a $45 (refundable) fee. MLE has a bit of an outbreak but the islands are unaffected. Luxury for value: The BB all-inclusive price was 370/day, including the two dives, NITROX, non-alcoholic drinks, three incredible meals, and the hefty government taxes. The dive sites are the same sites dived, or frankly better choices, than those by the neighboring resorts, e.g. Lux, Lilly Beach, etc, and the many liveaboard (safari) boats. But these are considerably more expensive with the quoted prices often being loss-leaders that do not include the taxes, three meals, or the diving. So the BB price is an absolute steal especially given the luxury atypical of diving operations and, most important, the intimate and personal good company of your new diving besties. The only extra is the local transfer ($300 by flight and speedboat, seaplane a bit more) and dive equipment rental. Immediate opportunity: I planned this wondrous experience on three days’ notice because a trial settled last minute. Despite its reputation for being quite an “exotic” location, it was VERY easy to get to BB. Several major airlines [Etihad, Turkish, Emirates, Qatar, Loftansa] have periodic sales to encourage travel to one of the first-to-reopen destinations in Asia. Periodic last-minute sale prices range from $700-1100 from US East Coast, and Etihad has just announced a $641 r/t fare through next March. I took Turkish which has an excellent Star Alliance lounge for a layover in IST, and as the countries reopen, certainly consider a stopover or brief excursion to DXB, AUH, etc. Met at the Male airport by BB’s local rep who walked me over to the domestic air terminal. Took a 30-min. FlyMe flight to Maamigili and a 20-min. speedboat ride to Dhigurah where I was met by Najah in the BB van for the 5 minute ride. Flyme and the speedboat are fully coordinated for seamless (including baggage) transfers via a short bus ride. A long-ish flight to be sure, so upgrade with points if you feel the need, but really no more difficult than a routine domestic flight. Bottom line: As Romney says: “dive now, work later!” Seriously, pick up the phone (or email) and book NOW, call the airlines, get your PCR test and go! It just doesn’t get any better! We enjoyed the stay at BB so much that we have already made plans to return. During covid times, the most important thing for us was safety and we felt that the hotel and staff were much more cautious than people are in our home country (Germany)! The team took care of us from the moment we landed in Male until we departed. The atmosphere in the hotel is like family - everyone is friendly, warm, helpful and very joyful. The rooms are spacious, modern, clean and stylish, especially the outside bathroom. Food was plenty and delicious, with international variations so we never got bored with what was served. Fresh juice with every meal was the best! The diving was just STUNNING. The diving team is careful and makes sure that safety comes first. We had a blast with the incredible dive sites, managed to snorkel with mantas and whale sharks. The highlight were short films from the dive day made by Mette, the dive base team lead. A great memory and souvenir. We needed to produce a negative PCR test 48h before arrival to Germany and that was well organized by the team. BB Hotel - thank you for everything you’ve done for us so that we felt safe, cared for and stress free on our holiday in the midst of a pandemic. You guys are the best and we cannot wait to see you again!

We discovered BB hotel in 2017 and were already impressed by the quality of the service and the way the help their visitors to feel well. This time in covid situation we can only reconfirm that they manage hospitality perfectly well. Food quality was very good with a each evening a 4 courses menu with a soup, a nice salad, a main course and finally a dessert.. my wife mentionned one time she doesn’t like fish and passion fruit and they systematically created an excellent alternative for her. (Even in 5 stars resorts they are not that good..) We have been diving with them and their prices and knowledge of the area are excellent. They do not hesitate to bring you to the right place (most of them next to) if a longer discovery trip is needed to see something specific. We have seen so many things thanks to that. Whale sharks, Manta Ray, Dophins, Turtles, so many big fish (many sharks, barracuda, Thuna,...) and many small animals. Everything is well organized and structured so our time was spent to have fun. They fully take care of all the duties before, during and after each expedition. We stayed afterwards into a luxury resort but our reservation got canceled last minute. The BB manager supported us to find another resort and within a day we had all things back on track. They just do it as it is totally obvious. Last time we already rated 5/5 and this time they did even better with surpise dinner on the beach, island sandbank pic nic and a daily video compilation of the diving trip. The complete team is very friendly and passionate. They all like what they do so you can only feel you are in the best place. We will very probably be back to see if they keep raising the bar :)
