Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Our stay at Afriski was less than perfect. We stayed over the Easter weekend, and were the only people at the entire resort. The place felt a bit run down, with parts looking like a building site. We found the staff friendly and helpful when our hot water didn't work. It was frustrating that there was no wifi offered at the cabins, and you could only access it at reception 1 km away. And when reception closed at 5pm, there was no access to the wifi which wasn't optimal. Also we were informed that the DSTV wasn't working either. I am sure it is a lovely place to stay in winter when the ski slope is working and there is a good vibe, but staying out of season felt like visiting a ghost town, and at a premium cost too.

We have stayed a few times and love the skiing, its a great place to brush up on your skills before heading off to Europe ... and they have the best instructors at a fraction of the cost. We are hoping to go back in June .... thats if they can be bothered to confirm receipt of my mail and payment for a booking.
The team at the call centre and the reservations desk are absolutely useless ... they do not reply to mails, do not confirm bookings and cannot seem to explain the process at all !!
I am surprised that they even have a business

I don't understand why the water is so dirty. Get a filter system on the water. Install normal geysers because the gas ones don't work. Halve of the menu is either not available or the pizza oven is offline AGAIN.

An Utterly Disappointing Experience at Afriski Mountain Resort
I wish I could give zero stars, but unfortunately, that's not an option. My recent experience at Afriski Mountain Resort was nothing short of a nightmare.
We arrived on the 30th of June after a six-hour drive from Pretoria, only to find that the units we had booked were unavailable. Instead, they attempted to accommodate us in a substandard unit that fell woefully short of our expectations. After hours of heated discussions at the reception, they reluctantly offered us another unit which had been flooded and double-booked previously. It was mysteriously available now, but the state of the unit left much to be desired.
The overall quality of the resort was so poor that we could only bear to stay for one night. Our departure was delayed due to the border being closed, so we left at the earliest opportunity the next morning.
Adding insult to injury, the resort heavily advertised their "Christmas in July" event, only for the restaurant to run out of food on the first night. We were left waiting for two hours, only to receive sandwiches. I've attached a photo of the meager offerings for reference.
When approached for a refund due to the unsatisfactory service and poor conditions, the management's response was dismissive at best. We emailed them saying we are prepared to take legal action, they insinuating that the costs of pursuing a case in Lesotho would be prohibitively high.
I strongly advise anyone considering a visit to Afriski Mountain Resort to reconsider. The lack of customer service, subpar accommodation, and overall poor management have left us with a bitter taste and a vacation utterly ruined.

A Disastrous Stay: False Advertising, Rude Management, Inadequate Amenities, and Mass Exodus of Guests. After driving for six long hours, we were met with disappointment from the very beginning. The booking mistake resulted in assigned rooms that looked nothing like the pictures portrayed. The stag and general manager's behavior was simply appalling. They were rude, unapologetic, and showed no interest in addressing our concerns. It was as if they couldn't care less about the wellbeing and satisfaction of their guests. Furthermore, the false advertising became painfully obvious as we discovered the lack of essential amenities. Both Wi-Fi and DSTV were nonexistent, leaving us isolated from the outside world and without any form of entertainment. The dining experience was a farce. The only restaurant on the premises had little to no food in stock, and the sandwich order we placed took a staggering 1.5 hours to arrive. To our dismay, the sandwiches were barely edible, a complete disappointment. Our experience was shared by multiple other guests who, like us, left the accommodation early, unable to bear the dismal conditions any longer. In conclusion, I cannot stress enough how terrible our stay was. The false advertising, rude management, inadequate amenities, and mass exodus of guests paint a clear picture of the utter lack of care and professionalism at this establishment. Avoid it at all costs if you value your time and sanity. Avoid this place at all costs!

We have been visiting Afriski for many years and honestly don’t want to come back. We booked the backpackers & hotel room at Vail - the whole experience was SHOCKING, all my booking emails were never answered and when we arrived they did not know about all our bookings, we were told the backpackers was stocked with cooking utensils by reservations telephonically and arrived to find nothing, the backpackers & hotel rooms were dirty and we can see that the entire resort is under totally useless new management. From the restaurants running short of food to the long waits for absolutely everything. The music festival was poorly advertised and absolutely a waste of money. This is not the Afriski that we were used to - SUPER expensive for no value & no management

So we've had this family holiday planned, booked, and deposit paid well in advance of 6 months or so. Our booking was done under my sister's details, confirmed on more than one occasion just to be sure, and we were told everything was in order and our dates secured, right up until May.
Then, all these bad reviews started popping up on facebook and all over social media. So to avoid any issues upon arrival this weekend, like so many others had expressed, we decided to confirm just one more time that everything was 100% confirmed.
To our disappointment, the response we received from Terry, the reception cabin crew, was that "unfortunately" our booking was allocated to somebody else. How's that even possible? It was very much confirmed and booked FOR US for the last 6 months upon every enquiry, but now it was suddenly booked for someone else? When we were set to arrive this weekend? Absolutely pathetic.
Had we not have checked for the 100th time before leaving this weekend, we would have just ended up like all the other families who arrived and found their accommodation being double booked.
Pathetic service, non existent communication.

We are currently day 1 of our 6 day stay. We paid for the luxury unit at the most expensive rate in the resort R78 000. On arrival were ushered to an entirely different unit at the same exorbitant cost which is anything but luxurious. We have no water or electricity or heating. I have never been so cold in my life. Our children cried through the night unable to warm themselves. The snow is coming through the gaps in all the windows. We had to sleep in our ski jackets and gloves . Temperature in the "unluxurious unit" is below freezing inside. The water in our bottles has turned to ice. It is absolute hell and management could care less. We have not heard a word from them. It is not possible to get through 6 nights in this state, but this is a very special 40th birthday trip and the roads are too dangerous to leave with the children. Through all our travels we have never experienced anything so shocking. Miserable just isn't enough to describe how we currently feel. Torturous conditions.

1. Lights in corridors in the dormitory didn’t work. Staffs didn’t prepare it after I arrived. That’s why I had to wait outside until someone fixed it at around 10pm…. It was incidents after I arrived at this accommodation at 6pm. Additionally, a member of the staff didn’t explain the details so I go and come back from the dormitory and the reception again and again, because it didn’t work lights… 2. Toilets in the dormitory didn’t flushed. And the toilets looked it has been a while since someone checked, because it has already bowl movement inside the toilet…. 3. Most light in the bathroom had broken. That’s why I couldn’t take a shower. When I told a lot of out of orders, two receptionists looked like they didn’t notice them completely. It means they didn’t check and clean for a while….so 4.I gave up to use facilities and tell receptionists anymore, because I was exhausted about these awful experiences after I arrived. 5. Unfortunately, Sky restaurant wasn’t good as well , because they didn’t have most menus. A waiter came and asked me a lot before I choose. Finally he suggested me to use Google without asking him. That was rude. It because a complaint… Even though they have a lot of contents on the menu in the restaurant, a waiter said “We don’t have it.”many times. So I asked him”Which one do you have?”. He told me “okay, what do you want to eat?” Ha? I got tiredness from his attitude more. Finally I ordered salad R100. It looked good, but it wasn’t a value of money. Finally I bought snacks and chocolates a lot because I was hungry and exhausted. And I felt stressed these situations.Although I was looking forward to coming here, I don’t want to stay here anymore… 6. They sell T-shirts but don’t have sizes. Even though I contacted them about T-shirts,which they sell here, by email in advance, they didn’t explain the facts to me on the email. They should notice they should work neatly more. I was disappointed toooo much…
They must organize, know and improve their operations. Although a lady who works at reception cared me bringing a heater to my dormitory, I don’t want to stay here anymore. Sorry that, but it wasn’t a value of money too much…even though this accommodation has a name” mountain Resort “…..

We booked a 4 bedroom unit for 4 couples (4 double beds). We followed up a month before leaving and they gave our unit to someone else. After big fights we indicated we have the unit again and surprise when we got there someone else was in our unit. We had to share bunk beds in another unit for a night before moving over to our unit. management promised to refund us 50% of the first night. After following up more than 20 times and a year later we still don't have the refund. Food at the restaurant also takes minimum 2 hours. They are the only ski resort in South Africa and doesn't look like they care about good management. I'd rather pay a little extra and ski in europe and at least know where I am going to sleep and have better ski experience.

"The drive is not an easy one. You need to build up momentum from the bottom going up the mountains. Don't kill the clutch. Many cars leave on tow trucks back."
