#1 of 27 Speciality lodging in Citrusdal
Travellers' Choice
Cederkloof Botanical Retreat is a place of restoration and healing, and a passion for science and common sense. Set in a beautiful valley abutting a wilderness area, the largest dedicated private fynbos gardens in Africa is now six years in the making. Wild and open landscapes await the more adventurous traveller where stark rock formations and stunning moon rises over the Cederberg can be witnessed from your chalet. You’ll also pass a number of rehabilitated Cedar tree saplings and may catch sight of duiker, steenbok, muskeljaatkat, baboons and leopard droppings. We have a lot of silence, though the chattering of more than 125 rare (and not so rare) bird species may disturb your peace. The swimming pool is fed with the spring water borehole that provides the water for the resort and conforms to European standards for mineral water. The borehole of 87m delivers 11700 litres of water at a temperature of 26 - 30 °C, all under its own natural pressure. Due to the fact that the water is forced through a calcium formation under its own pressure, there is no need for pumps or filters. By the time the water reaches the top, it is sparkling clean. Cottages: There are 10 chalets of which 4 are two-bedroom (en suite) with sitting area in kitchen with wood fireplace and 6 are one-bedroom open plan units all with double doors that open onto the terrace which is the perfect spot for sundowners, to light up a braai or do Stargazing from your private Jacuzzi. In the morning you can take your breakfast outside into the country air and experience the superabundance of life which includes blue agama lizards, blue crane, Veroux eagle, sugarbirds, butterflies, dragonflies and many more.

We had a lovely stay. We booked especially as it was pet friendly. If I had any criticism it would be to say that it would have been nice if it was possible to have a gate on deck for pets. We were chased up the drive by two dogs on arrival and had to barricade the balcony to keep our dogs safe. It's pet friendly but not pet safe. Having been to several pet friendly resorts, they have all had a section that was enclosed. Couldn't relax 100% because of being chased by the strange dogs on arrival.

What can I say - from the turnoff to the Retreat we already knew we were in a very special place. Citrus orchards and beautifully kept natural vegetation. Hearty welcome by Yvette (co-owner). The accommodation is neat, tidy and well equipped with extra surprise like fresh organic rooibos tea and fresh coffee beans with grinder and plunger. Our jacuzzi was switched on prior to our arrival so we could immediately start relaxing and enjoy the fynbos surrounds. Private and quiet with only the sound of birds and nature. The natural spring water is an added bonus - crystal clear and healthy. There is just too much to mention and we are looking forward to our next visit. Thank you Yvette, Anja (resort manager and a stunning person) and staff for a memorable stay

Had a fantastic time. Although the temperatures exceeded 35C on each of the days the chalet was cool with the air con and closing of the curtains. A few issues...there is no curtain in the Kitchen - causes temp to rise drastically in pm. The overflow from the jacuzzi flows down to the swing doors on the bedroom. Doors are rotting and the wall is beginning to have a damp problem. The fridge took a long time to get a bit cold even on max setting. The braai was a bit low for us older persons. Lastly the ground to the north of the chalet is been cleaned out but the refuse and junk in there goes totally against your motto of environmentally friendly. There is even a dump towards the river, out of site but and environmental hazard. Due to Covid no service understandable. We had a

The retreat is situated in a beautiful area, close enough to Citrusdal to be convenient and far enough to unwind. The cottage we stayed in (no 6) was very private and equipped with everything we needed. The view from the cottage is stunning and we spent several wonderful hours relaxing in the jacuzzi and admiring the view of the mountains and fynbos. We did both hiking trails and although rather challenging, we can highly recommend it.

Everything is a highlight when you arrive, from driving through the orange orchards, arriving at your cottage, surrounded by fynbos and mountains, and the silence, starry skies and night sounds in the evening. Our second visit was even better than our first, and we have a great appreciation of what the owners have achieved and aspiring to on the farm. Cant wait to come back for our next visit.
