Just returned to freezing Vermont after a delightful week at Hotel Popoyo. Very comfortable, spotlessly clean, great food, and wonderfully kind and competent staff. We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms by the pool with a super comfortable king size bed. Katherine the manager spoke perfect English and arranged transportation to and from the airport. We rented a motorcycle for the week to explore the area, which made our trip all the more fun. The other guests were an interesting mix of surfers, families, and older travelers such as ourselves. Stay here....you will love it!
We've stayed at Hotel Popoyo three times, and have never been disappointed. The entire staff is incredibly nice and accommodating, especially Maximo, the manager, and Adonis, the driver. We had Adonis pick us up at the airport, which was much easier and less stressful then renting a car. If you do rent a car, I would definitely recommend an SUV especially if you plan on visiting the Popoyo region during the rainy season. The hotel has some of the best food on the beach as well as consistently cold beer. (There are frequent and lengthy power outages.). Hotel Popoyo also doesn't run out of beer, which many of the other bars and hotels do. If you're going to surf, you can rent boards down the beach at the Melting Elephant. Adonis or Ramone will gladly give you a ride to the far end of the beach. It's only about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. Hotel Popoyo has both dorm style rooms and 'lux' rooms close to the pool. I've stayed in both, and recommend the pool-side accommodations. These have TV, air,and bigger bathrooms. Breakfast is included with either selection. Playa Guasacate of course has the laid-back beach vibe that you would expect from a surfer's destination. There's often live music, and Sunday is family day - when all the locals enjoy the beach with their families. I can't say enough nice things about the staff. Most of them do not speak English, but are wonderful at charades, and will do whatever they can to help. I'm secretly hoping no one will read this review, because I'd like to keep this little gem all to myself.…
One of the few non beach side hotels in Popoyo. We already got our oom at 11.45 the first day, with welcome drinks, bottled water in the room, excellent hot water in the shower. We loved the big pool, quite atmosphere and short walk to the beach. The breakfast is included and was good. The staff is nice and friendly. All in all we prefer this hotel above some of the beach side options where we stayed before.
Rooms are a great value, super clean with AC. IF YOU ARE THINKING OF PREBOOKING AT ONE OF THE MANY NEW "MAYBE GOOD" HOTELS IN THE AREA" BE CAUTIOUS... This place is tried tested and true, great food, accomidation and vides. As a fellow proud nica hotel owner "2 hour drive away" This placeis a inspiration for all.
We ate the restaurant a couple of times during our visit to Popoyo. The property is beautiful - fabulous pool and restaurant area. The service was excellent. We found the fish dishes to be fantastic. The gringo food needs a revamp - our nachos were awful. They placed strips of processed cheese slices on the tortilla chips and it seemed to be microwaved. We would consider staying here on a future visit to the area.
