Travellers' Choice
Rancho Santana, set serenely in the Southwest Pacific offers a collection of distinctive seaside experiences. Though little more than two hours from Nicaragua's capital city of Managua by car, the property has grown into a quiet community that enjoys purity, authenticity, and a somehow romantically rustic elegance. Both residential and resort, "the ranch" boasts over 2,700 acres of majestic land along two miles of shoreline which include five unique beaches. And while this paradise is the perfect setting to do nothing at all but sunbathe and stargaze, its remarkable range of terrain, unique climate and soothing coastal breezes make it a coveted destination for the more active and adventurous traveler. Tucked between the open sea and the immense Lake Nicaragua, "the ranch" has the distinction of being one of the only isthmuses on the entire Pacific Ocean. This unique geographical phenomenon creates gentle tropical breezes, which when paired with year-round warm ocean waters make the beaches' surfing conditions some of the most coveted on the planet. With the early sunrise, "shredders" of all ages and origins take to the breaks of Las Cinco Playas de Rancho Santana, which include some of the world's most vertical waves, providing both visual drama as well as world-class surfing. Lookers-on walk the water's edge watching the surfers dance across the waves while just yards behind them fisherman bring in what will be the evening's fresh catch in the clubhouse's renowned restaurant, La Finca y el Mar.

Our entire family went to Rancho Santana for a weeklong stay. From the moment we arrived, it was an impeccable experience. First, the Ranch is situated in a beautiful part of Nicaragua, with incomparable views of the ocean from the Clubhouse and guest rooms. The large property has many beautiful spots, including beautiful restaurants, secluded beaches, a surf club next to an excellent taqueria, and a spa that will blow you away with its natural, harmonious and calming aesthetic. Secondly, the guest experience at Rancho Santana is incredible. The staff is accommodating and attentive, happy to help with any question or concern. We truly felt that we were fully taken of during our whole stay. And third, it’s a place where you can choose to either enjoy a relaxing, secluded stay, or interact with the people and communities involved with Rancho Santana. The Ranch works closely with the local Nicaraguan communities, and I loved discovering the region’s food, nature and people during my stay.

Rancho Santana is an all in one paradise. Great amenities, service, food, views, and no lack of things to do. Stayed for a week. Rooms were beautiful. Highly recommend the SPA. Only issue is actually getting there. But that is more an issue of the state of the world.

This place is perhaps my favorite in the whole world to stay. Delicious food, gorgeous sunsets, impeccably maintained nature, lots of animals, friendly folks… very reasonable pricing… gorgeous beaches. You need a decent car to get there, but what a paradise it is.

Rancho Santana is a wonderful place to stay. For our family, we chose to stay at Casa Campana to be close to the beginner surf area and surf school as well as the amazing Taqueria. It was perfect for us and my kids could surf as much as they wanted. It was about a 5 min walk to the beach. On reflection, I am glad we stayed there but there would also be reasons to consider staying closer to the main inn area. The staff at Rancho Santana are top notch - from the concierge to the restaurant staff to the guides on horse riding tours to the house keeping staff. We appreciated everyone we met and they were super nice. And, not to forget the food. Restaurants were great and La Tienda on site had, among other things, fresh hummus, ceviche, eggs, meats (including bacon and sausage), cookies, and bread as well as good wines, beers, rum, etc. One thing I was concerned about was the border crossing from Costa Rica to Nicaragua and back. While it took some time, this route was the best option for us due to covid requirements and I am glad we booked the transfer through the hotel. The help through the entire border crossing was invaluable.
