We just finished a five day stay at Hotel Tilapia. Our team was in Mwanza for work and we couldn't have been happier with hotel Tilapia. Shamez and Vandy were so accommodating, patient and resourceful. Anytime we had a question or point of interest they were right there to guide us. And the staff was incredible. So kind and personable. Our rooms were thoughtfully tidied everyday and they were mindful of the mosquito nets and set them up during turn down. We had amazing dinners, lunches, breakfasts. The menu was very extensive - with comfort foods from all over the global to local favorites. The hotel is set up in a way that even if it's crowded everyone has a place and it feels private no matter how many people are there. Families, co-workers, couples - there's something for everyone and I couldn't recommend it enough for anyone visiting Mwanza.

My first evening stay I stayed in one of the rooms upstairs, the room was spacious and well maintained and one had a wonderful view over Lake Victoria. The next room I had was downstairs, also very well maintained although much smaller than the previous room and the view over Lake Victoria was obstructed. Rooms had coffee facilities, a small refrigerator, aircon and TV. Bathroom was also in good condition with hot water available.
The breakfast served in the mornings is quite average for the price one pay per night, if you compare it to other Hotels where you pay less and get much better breakfast options. Was quite disappointed with the breakfast.
The restaurant is quite nice as well as the bar upstairs, you have wonderful views over Lake Victoria and the beer and food is very good. The only downside is the service from the waiters, you can wait quite a while if you don't call them regularly as it seems they forget about you.

This hotel is nothing short of a gem in the heart of Mwanza. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The property is spotless, and the rooms are well equipped. The food is very good, especially if you like Indian curry. The pool is lovely and the view of lake. Victoria can’t be beat. The cool breeze off the lake makes this a really enjoyable location. The property is safe and I had no problems leaving my teenage son alone during the day on days that I had to work. I would highly recommend the hotel, and would not consider staying anywhere else in Mwanza if we are able to come back. The price point is very reasonable and worth the little extra for all of the creature comforts.

Arrived around sunset. Parking space very tight, especially if you are driving a pick-up. Dinner was prepared quite quickly when compared with other restaurants in Tanzania. When we requested the bill, it took almost the same time to prepare the dishes. The bathroom in the room was fun!!! ( c the picture)

My husband and I have to agree with all of the excellent reviews. We stayed here two weeks while working in the area and it was a joy to come home every evening to a relaxing and beautiful setting. The staff are kind, attentive, and offer. Excellent service. It is a safe, clean and beautiful environment set on the relaxing shores of Lake Victoria. In addition, I took advantage of the salon services, something I have never done when working in Africa. The prices were very reasonable, and the services again, were done with excellence, and the staff are very friendly. You have to book with the salon and pay directly to the salon. They make it very easy. It’s no problem at all. We will definitely stay again when working in Mwanza…an added bonus is the Sanaane National Park. You literally walk a few steps from the hotel to the headquarters for the Tanzanian national park for Sanaane island and the short boat trip over to the island and the hike are clean safe and it is excellent. Greetings to all the staff there. Thank you for making our time restful.

We went their with a big group of children and adults. Hired 2 cars to eat the famous mwanza Talapia fish. Decided to go to this hotel as the name suggested thought it would he the best. The ambiance was amazing no doubt. But the food took nearly 2 hours. As we waited we were attacked with swarms of mosquitoes so we changed to an indoor place. Lo and behold in no time that indoor room was teaming with mosquitoes there was hardly a spot missing on the wall or the roof where there was no mosquitoes to the extent they were falling on our plates. On top the food was crap steamed fish and baked fish both were same biryani was so bad and the waiters were not to be seen. Requested to see the manager and they just told us they are not around. It was apalling! Such a beautiful but the mangement and the food was so bad. I would only recommend people to go there take pictures. Not to go in the evening and dont try the food its literally....bad!

This feels like my home away from home in Mwanza!!! The highlight of this well situated hotel is the staff. We felt like family from the minute we arrived. All requests were handles as it there was no problem - with anything! They helped us arrange a tremendous safari with Nature's land and made airport transfers and taxi use simple for us. Right on the bank of Lake Victoria, this special little hotel offers a pool, restaurant and bar. Each night they turned down our beds and put down the mosquito netting. Breakfast buffet was included and there were delicious avocados, fruit, hot dishes and coffee. The restaurant has an eclectic menu - we tended to eat mostly Indian which we enjoyed. The bar offers cocktails, "mocktails", beer and wine.
The property is strewn with interesting art made from recycled metals. In addition the owner stores three vintage cars on the I hope to return to Mwanza and the Tilapia again soon!

Scenic view of the lake, dinner was delicious, kudos to the chef, rooms are okay. Customer service worst,we arrived at around 7pm got no help the staff were just staring at us. The receptionist a lady was cold. We got in our room, there were no flip flops we called to ask if we could be assisted, we were rudely told hospitality department had gone home since it was at night. Cummon, no one could even check another room and just give us flip flops to use in the bathroom?? You need to train your staff on good customer care. The hotel is beautiful, the location is accessible but the customer service needs to be improved.

I only stayed for one night, but I would choose this hotel for a longer stay. The hotel was very accommodating when we showed up early. They allowed us to check into a room early. The room had a very nice view. I especially appreciated that the room was set up so that you could relax on the balcony or sit inside and watch the water from chairs. The room isn't very modern but it was clean and comfortable. The hot water came on as they informed us- within about 20 minutes after turning the heater on.
I ate in the restaurant 3 times. The service was pretty slow but the food was good. I had hoped to order the prawns masala as recommended on previous reviews, but prawns weren't available that day. Breakfast was a smaller buffet with someone available to make eggs. It was fine but not great. I had tilapia for lunch and dinner and was pleased with it.
The housekeeping staff was very pleasant and attentive. We used the laundry service. It wasn't cheap but the clothes came back within a few hours.

The hotel is located at the shores of Lake Victoria and offers great views. It is about 15 minutes walking to the city centre, or a very short drive. The hotel in general as well as the rooms are quite charming and cosy. Service (cleaning, turndown, laundry) is attentive. Bathrooms are small. Power is available 24/7, hot water needs to be switched on a few minutes before use. WiFi is available everywhere and works fine. There are various restaurants and bars. Food is in general OK, but I do not recommend their pizzas.
There are also rooms on a moored boat. As the boat was partly flooded during my stay, I doubt they are available at the moment...
