Detailed Reviews
We only stayed one night in Tete, but can highly recommend Villa Habsburg. The staff were so helpful, both in helping get information about visas into Mozambique, and then looking after us once we'd arrived.
The room was spotless, comfortable and with a great shower.
We were provided with wifi, filtered water, a fridge, TV and a very pleasant breakfast. We were just stopping off on our way through Mozambique to Zimbabwe, but we would have happily stayed longer at Villa Habsburg. Lovely views over the Zambezi from the garden and lots of birds in the garden to enjoy too.

A real surprise - a small European heaven in hot, ugly and uninviting Tete. The small B&B is located in a garden on the north bank of the Zambezy, with nice view of the river and the city. The rooms are impeccable, with air conditioning, nice bed with a mosquito net, up to date bathroom, and Wifi. The breakfast is excellent. You can relax in the garden in the evening looking at the sunset over the river. The owner is a charm, looking after the smallest detail. By far the best choice in Tete.

I stayed in Villa Habsburg for 5 days in February 2013 and I can only say that I would come back any time. A real juwel in Tete and in the whole of Mozambique!
Monika is an incredible host and her staff has been equally hospitable.
The place is very clean, neat, serves great breakfast and has amazing views over the Zambezi where we managed to see a Hippo on several evenings of our stay.
Hundreds of interesting books as well as a working wifi eliminated any boredom.
Me being German as well I really enjoyed to talk to Monika and it was fascinating.
All in all - no better place to stay in Tete !

Whether coming from the north, passing the huge coal mine, or the south - which looks like a bit of a wasteland - Villa Habsburg is an incredible experience if you need (or want!) to stay in Tete. It is on the north shore of the Zambezi River, to the east side directly before crossing the bridge. After bumping along the sandy road, arriving at Villa Habsburg is an oasis, with its extremely hospitable (and fascinating) owner/manager Monika von Habsburg and her staff. There is a choice of rooms, all with AC, books galore and atmosphere, the main/dining room is a work of art, and a sparkling swimming pool looked to be near completion. Internet access was good, although it was tempting to just sit in the garden along the Zambezi River rather than attending to work. Only breakfast was served at the time of my visit, but there are restaurants not too far away.

Visiting Tete regularly on business one needs to have a retreat where one can relax and at Villa Hapsburg this is exactly what you get.
The rooms are very well appointed with air conditioning and luxury linen. The staff are friendly and always willing to assist where needed. There is also a very well maintained sparkling pool to cool down in after those hot Tete days.
The breakfast is also something to look forward to.

Arriving in Tete, the hottest city in Mozambique (both in terms of temperature and speed of development), the average non-African is invariably a bit exhausted - by the countless potholes when coming from Malawi, by the border when coming from Zim, and so on. For those who are looking for a refuge from sun, crowds, dust, there is the Villa Habsburg right on the Northern Bank of the Zambezi. A place you would expect to find in Europe (Austria, Germany, Italy to be precise), max in Cape Town, but definitely not in Tete.
It is a truly magnificent haven. I do not easily award five stars, but given the surroundings, what Monika achieved in Tete is just marvelous. Tastefully decorated, books everywhere, paintings and furniture produce a European atmosphere. The rooms are very well furnished, there is a decent WLAN, the breakfast is wonderful. As a result of all these atouts, you will meet the most interesting people - those who look a bit further.
When in Tete, there really is no alternative to the Villa Habsburg.

Not a Bavarian castle as the name would suggest, but a quaint guesthouse in Tete. Nevertheless you feel like royalty here in this location, on the banks of mighty river Zambezi. Staff is super nice and helpful, and the rooms are generally of decent enough size. Our room, Rosemary, easily held four family members, each with one large suitcase. We really liked the eclectic mix of details in the decoration and furnishing of the room, and also the fact that we had our own router for fast Internet access. Small minuses for the hard mattresses and the lack of soap in the bathroom, Breakfast was great with both hot and cold options. They do not serve dinner, unless ordered in advance. But it’s a short walk over to the Southern Sun next door where they’ll gladly feed you.

Having stayed in few places in Tete, this place is a hidden Gem. It is right on the shore of the river and has fantastic views. the rooms are clean if basic but the beers are cold. They do not do supper but there is enough places around to eat. The breakfast is good and the coffee strong.
Cost worked out at $115 per night and compared to other hotels that charge twice if not threes times as much it is well worth it.
The pool is very welcome after the heat during the day which was 44deg when i was there.
Should have kept this place a secret but they deserve the review.
Beds have mozie nets which is a must in this town
