David Bristow's latest Book "Been there Done That" (Struik March 2011) rates the Pig and Whistle as a unique place to Stay, Eat, Drink. It appears as number 33 of his top 50!! The Pig & Whistle Inn has 10 beautifully restored rooms with magnificent antiques. There are 4 en-suite rooms and the 6 traditional original rooms with communal bathrooms. All rooms have recently been equipped with new beds and Percale linen. The first owner, Thomas Hartley, built this house in 1821, a three story dwelling with 2 bedrooms on the top floor. The original rooms are rooms 5 and 6 in this Old Settler Inn. We are now rated number one in Bathurst on Trip Adviser.

We have always known about the pig but never had an opportunity to visit until now. It's a quaint old style hotel with all the right amenities. The only das thing was that it was totally empty besides us. Hopefully they will survive this crazy time as I'd love to come back.

How wonderful to know that there are still a few places which are REAL olde worlde hotels and pubs. Possibly the best example in South Africa - the Pig and Whistle!!! Historic and set in a smallish village, the highlight is definitely the pub! So few pubs still have real atmosphere, so if you want to experience what a real pub should be like, visit the Pig & Whistle!!! The hotel itself offers comfortable, clean and AFFORDABLE accommodation, and all the staff are great!!!

Thank you so much for your feedback and for taking the time to report. We have over the years tried to maintain the historic feel of our 189-year-old treasure. It's a pity that the lockdown regulations completely disrupted our villages 200-year celebrations, your visit would have coincided with a really happy time. Pleased you enjoyed your stay, we look forward to your return vist

We had a pleasant stay at The Pig in Bathurst. The room and bathroom was clean and comfortable. The ceiling fan saved us from the heat. Friendly barmen and staff.Enjoyed the steak night. The carguards can be a bit of a pain as they expect to be tipped every time you park your car and we stayed for three nights and did some sightseeing in the surrounds.

Thank you for the kind review. The increase in car guard activity is a sign of the Covid unemployment times we live in. The Pig and Whistle was a big contributor to the Bathurst Development Trust, which provided about R1,6million worth of food aid into the village during the height of the lockdown. Thank you for your valued support and feedback during these trying times for the hospitality industry

Lovely stay and vibe in a little town Very old so don't expect any creature comforts like air con No warning that rooms are upstairs so stairs can be an issue So ask when booking Very noisy in rooms next to side road Not all rooms have double beds so be sure to ask

Thank you for your comprehensive review. Our heritage site has just celebrated its 188th birthday and the town turns 200 in May. Unfortunately you visited during a record heatwave, so our usual ceiling and floor fans were inadequate. The Historic rooms are on the street side of the hotel whereas the newer en-suite rooms are at the back of the hotel

We booked this hotel on Booking.com because it has WiFi in all rooms(information on the site). But when we arrived we found out it doesn’t have WiFi in the rooms and never had. So the information was false. When we contacted the manager and owner they were very rude and when we wanted to leave(to find another place for WiFi because we need it for our work), they didn’t want to give us money back. So we just left without any refund(we paid for 2 nights and for 2 breakfasts).
