A personal, honest and sustainable proposal, the opposite of what large hotel chains offer. We stayed with two children in the apartment and although we only stayed 3 nights I would return without hesitation. Due to its strategic location, we were able to enjoy the beaches of Vinaròs and Penyíscola and the gastronomic offer of Benicarló, all about 15 minutes away by car, and then relax in the facilities of this cozy refuge. My thanks to the owners, Marieke and Gerarrd, for their project and for their kindness.

We had a lovely relaxing, three night stay at Mas del Rey and would have loved to have stayed longer.
The location is fantastic, in the middle of no where but easy to find as it is well signposted. It is also within and easy drive of many small towns such as Benicarlo, Calig, Villaros and Peniscola.
The accommodation is designed in a rustic Spanish style while being built for comfort with spacious, rooms, en suite shower rooms and private terraces. Our bed was large and fabulously comfy. Just perfect.
Outside there are shady terraces and sunny terraces to chose from as well as the lovely pool area.
Breakfast was lovely with perfectly cooked eggs.
Marieke and Gerard were friendly, welcoming and very accommodating. Super-hosts really. We will definitely return if we are in the area again and I would highly recommend Mas del Rey for anyone looking for a comfortable, laid back place to stay.

We had a fantastic week with Marieke and Gerard and felt wonderfully relaxed.
They are always ready to explain the area and get to know you nice restaurants in the area. We also enjoyed the delicious 3-course menu prepared by Gerard and served by Marieke, a TOP team.
With Vinaros and Peniscola (especially the old part is worth a visit), there are beautiful beaches nearby where you can relax.
The room was very spacious with a beautiful view over the fields from our balcony and the dogs also give you a warm feeling at home.

Went to Marieke and Gerard last week with a group of colleagues for a workation. A very warm welcome on their beautiful grounds, which they have built from the ground up. The room was spacious and very tidy, the towels were changed mid-week and the beds were clean and comfortable. Every morning and afternoon a delicious and extensive breakfast and lunch buffet was ready for us and twice Marieke and Gerard provided us with a delicious dinner. How pampered we felt! Very grateful for their hospitality. I would love to come back here again!

Family of four with two teenagers aged 15 and 17. A perfect place to rest and disconnect, while sightseeing. Tastefully decorated, clean, very spacious, the pool area very manicured (the young did not want to leave), the breakfast spectacular and the hosts lovely. We'll repeat for sure. Highly recommended.

Stayed here for a week with friends and our three kids but almost missed this unforgettable experience when the apartment turned out to be booked. In their email, however, the owners - a Dutch couple, Marieke and Gerard - suggested alternative sleeping arrangements (kids in one room, parents in their own adjacent rooms) which worked out well. This personal touch typifies Gerard and Marieke: they will go out of their way to make you happy (like calling after Barca tickets) while at the same time giving you all the personal space you need. The Mas is their home and you are truly their guest.
The Mas itself is brilliant. Marieke and Gerard designed and built this stone country house themselves and really put a lot of thought, love, energy and taste into it. The rooms are very spacious and have enourmous balconies that face south and offer lots of privacy (no direct views from other balconies). Furnishings are stylish, practical (lots of closet space!) and tasteful. Turns out Gerard made most of them himself; quite the craftsman. The thick walls and shutters make sure the room stays cool. The design bathroom is also spacious and the shower works perfectly (not always a given in Spain); fresh towels every two days. Beds are firm and very comfortable. The rooms are in excellent condition and spotlessly clean.
Breakfast is terrific: homemade bread, cheese and cold cuts, fresh oj from their own orchard, eggs, fruit, yoghurt, strong coffee and sometimes the occasional crepe; couldn't be better. The three big dogs are laidback and very well behaved; they'll keep you company but won't beg or scrounge (although they do appreciate a cuddle from time to time).
There's no fridge in the rooms, but in the large common room - where you can find a tv, stereo, Wii, books, games and dvd's - there's a well stocked fridge from which you can take wine, beer and soda's at reasonable prices (1.50 euros a can, 7 euros for a very palatable bottle of wine).
You can also have dinner at the Mas: for a mere 15 euros they'll cook you a very, very tasty three course dinner served outside on the patio or in the main room; a great way to meet the other guests and socialize (the Indonesian "rijsttafel" is Gerards speciality; I highly recommend it).
The large pool is conveniently located at the back of the building so as to keep the noise of aquatic enjoyment away from the patio. It has ample space around it (as well as six deckchairs) and the back terrace - which has a nice fireplace, by the way - offers semi-concerned parents a good view of the mountains and their kids.
Nights (and days) are really quiet around the Mas as it's situated in the middle of almost nowhere, overlooking orchards and fields of artichoke, with a view of the distant sea in front and the mountains behind you. It's a 15 minute drive to Vinaros and - a better choice - Peniscola. Your hosts will offer expert advice on things to do and places to eat at.
At Vinaros you can join the tollway to Valencia (75 minutes) or Barcelona (105 minutes). For more local trips you can borrow one of the bikes they keep or just take a walk through the fields and orchards.
It's isolated location makes Mas del Rey a little hard to find, especially at night. But no worries, Gerard will come find you when you call him at two in the morning to tell him you're lost and he'll still offer you a drink afterwards.

Mas del Rey is an excellent, relaxed, friendly and quiet place to stay; for us it felt as if we were visiting friends. Can't wait to visit them again.

In English... if you"re looking for a place to rewind and love to share dinner around a big table this is it! Lovely host couple who make you feel at home in their home. Nice stylish decoration. Great pool. Away from it all. Nothing to complain about except for the presence of a colony of pesky flies maybe. But hey... youre in the countryside!
