This Lodge is an extraordinary gem. Hidden away in southern Mozambique, Topo Das Arvores (Tree Tops) offers the discriminating traveller unprecidented natural beauty, top notch service and an experience you will never forget. When you arrive and climb the stairs made of native wood to the balcony you will be welcomed by the Indian Ocean stretching from north to south and out to the horizon. The waves break on a stunning, sandy beach just down the hill from the Lodge. The water is crystal clear and warm making it ideal for swimming and wading. The Point Malongane Dive Club is located just south of the Lodge (within walking distance) and offers scuba, snorkeling and fishing. If you are into long beach walks be ready for the best walks you've ever taken. The wide beaches are beautiful and not at all crowded. It's not unusual to have miles of beach to yourself with no one in sight. When heading back to the Lodge you'll climb up a dune and back into the forest where butterflys abound. The stunning scenery will capture your senses but the unparalleled service at the Lodge is equally memorable (and all too rare these days). Fred Oosthuizen, manager at the lodge, will provide a warm welcome, get you a cold beer and then proceed to feed you some of the best home cooking I've ever had - often including fish caught off the beach that day AND home made bread. If you are lucky, owners John and Susan will show up to and tell you how they've worked many years to build the Lodge. They are a wealth of information about the local area and Southern Africa in general. The Lodge has only a few rooms. Some have ocean views and others are screened by trees (the latter are good for divers who wish to nap after a morning underwater). If you are into stargazing from bed and watching the sun rise, ask for Room #4 at the north end of the Lodge. Three of its four walls are almost all window. Keep the windows open at night to hear a variety of birds and monkeys in the "bush" surrounding the place. The area the Lodge is located in is most commonly accessed from South Africa (the border is very close) but working with Fred, I obtained transportation with a driver from Maputo to the north (capital of Mozambique). The drive is an adventure by itself starting with a short ferry ride across Maputo Bay. You are soon out in the bush on sand roads where you will see various birds and monkey troops. The last 10 or so kilometers comprise a narrow deep-sand road that weaves in and out of the trees and leads you to think you'll be stuck before ever reaching the Lodge. Talk about a "get away"! If he's available, ask Fred to set you up with Felipe as your driver. Hang on (!) but know Filipe drives the road several times a week and knows all its twists, turns (and potholes) very well. Time allowing check out the nearby elephant reserve and Ponta de Ouro to the south. Also check out "Chippy's" wood carving shop in the small village just south of the lodge. Chippy makes some beautiful and unique works using local woods like sandlewood and ebony. Visiting Tree Tops is an authentic, rich adventure that should be on everyone's bucket list. My husband and I recently stayed at Tree Tops for a weekend as we (a group of 10 people) have booked there for 12 days in December and wanted to see what the place looks like and what we need to take along in December. We were blown aback by the beautiful house, excellent views and the friendly people working there! The layout of the house makes it a perfect holiday destination for a group. The best part of it is that we only have to take our clothes and food along when we go again in December. Everything else is provided, even towels! All of us can't wait for December!

We rented this house in Ponta Malongane with another family. It has five en suite bedrooms that are lovely. The self-catering kitchen has everything that you might want to cook and create meals. The staff, Luigi and Nellie, are lovely. The way the house is designed you are able to have complete autonomy from everyone you are with, should you want quiet time or a nap (while listening to the sound of the waves crash).

Short walk to the beach, but your calves will get a healthy work out coming back up to the house.

The house would be a perfect location for a house party as it can easily accommodate five couples.

You do need four wheel drive to access the property.

Lovely, highly recommend.
