Lou Moon is a beautiful and special spot that I find could use a bit more charisma and familiarity. Below I'm listing the pros and cons of this overall amazing place:

+ This type of location is very rare in Ghana: The resort is built around a little bay that allows for calm and extremely clear water. You can swim in the ocean as if it was a pool, only better
+ the resort is small and feels extremely private
+ our room was on an island which in and on itself is an experience!
+ the room was very clean and the view was amazing
+ the food was delicious, fresh and the menu changed everyday. The kitchen was flexible enough to serve alternatives
+ the complementary breakfast was okay
+ the staff was friendly and professional

Now, even a place like Lou Moon has a few downsides which led me to deduct a star

- the staff - while trying very hard - often seemed tired and exhausted. The same waiter that served us dinner and drinks until midnight, served breakfast from early in the morning the next day. When we asked him how many of these days he works per week he said 6 days. Not sure what that says about the working conditions at Lou Moon...
- the sand at the beach is very coarse and really uncomfortable to stand/walk on. This is strange because the Axim area in Ghana normally has very fine and white sand. Generally, the area does not look super authentic with the unusual sand and the planted lawn, but that's just a very personal observation and probably doesn't bother most people
- Our room only had European plugs despite the fact that in Ghana UK type plugs are standardized
- we saw the hotel staff getting rid of trash (including plastics) by throwing it into the (so far) clean water of the bay... needless to say I would expect a place like Lou Moon to be more aware of the consequences this will have for the immediate environment of the hotel
- despite it's small size and private feeling, Lou Moon did not exude a feeling of familiarity in our experience, and in fact felt a bit impersonal. Possibly because the staff did not seem happy and balanced, and because the owners who were present, did not make an effort to meet and greet their guests. They had been busy with their befriended guests
- Visiting Lou Moon comes at a high cost which I believe would be absolutely justified if some of the points I listed in the cons would be addressed

Will visit again!

Dear Keshia, Thank you for your review, specially for the "pros" you give us. But I feel pained to read your "cons" with suspicion of bad employment condition, which are not taking of the reality we are facing in this part of Ghana. Let me reply to some of them: Staff Working hours, Usually our staff is working five and half days a week, but it happen sometime they have to work 6 or even 7 days during holidays period, one or twice a year, but never more than two weeks in a row. Which is indeed not easy and tiring for them, but we have no choice because, first, it is very difficult to find skill waiter/esses who like to stay in a remote site like ours, secondly we are unfortunately not alway fully booked that we can decently appoint more of them. They might sometime work for long hours but they also have often some very quite days. Read the other reviews to see that they are most of the time very happy and efficient people. I personally have very good and friendly relationship with them despite, I and the managers are pushing them to deliver the max to satisfy our guest, but don't worry we also rewards them. Plugs: All the rooms have at least one UK /multistandards sockets I mention that half of the domestical appliances available on the Ghanaian market are not equiped with Uk Plugs. Trash in the sea:You might be confused of the way the trashes where going. You have no idea of the quantity of plastics and other refused WE removed from the sea. Emanuel and Joseph, beach attendants, spend hours to sweep the beaches but also to pick the trash from the water, every days. Some days we have to add five or ten people to help them . If the bay water was so clean that day it is likely because the boys are sweating to clean it . Owners: I am sorry if I didn't great you personally, what I try to do as often as possible,as you mention I was with friends who came from Belgium to celebrate our tenth anniversary. As you mention you will come again, I promise to welcome you personally if I am around. I will conclude with this consideration, we greatly appreciate all reviews pros and cons. They build up the relationship with guests and all of them help us to improve our performance towards our guests."Pros" are always a warmfull reward, showing us that we are on the good way." "Cons"are sometime opening our eyes on outstanding issues but also sometime showing us how challenging it is to operate and maintain such a paradise in this part of the world. Thanks to our guest to follow us since eleven years now and also a very great thanks to our staff for their deep commitment. Thank you again dear Keshia. Paul Ramlot Owner and MD of Lou Moon Lodge

Ive just come back from three days stay and Lou Moon Lodge and i must say i couldnt be more impressed with the place. We stayed in the Island Bayside suite, and it was divine. It was all earthen clay in warm tones, and organic decor. And it was great. The food was fantastic each day, and the staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Probably the best resort in Ghana right now!
Probably my only critique can also count among its pluses: Its quite remote. Which is lovely, but its not the easiest ride, and its probably best to have a 4x4 to make the journey.

Nice environment, excellent food (4 courses for dinner!), comfortable room.
Buttler is added value on the island.

Some points to improve:
1. Your policy states it is a quiet resort. Then please be consequent when an (adult!) guest plays loud music from his phone at breakfast.
2. The food-at-island service is great, but could get an eco-upgrade (replace aluminium foil and plastic with reusable covers (eg beewax paper?)
3. Towels have had their best (read soft) time.
4. Some tactically positioned rocks could improve access to the island
5. Leaving few more minutes between the courses will not make people impatient :-)
6. Website with terms & conditions could get an update. E.g. to make it more clear that full board is only available on festive days.

We understood that the owners schedule to add 11 tentrooms (like Zaina) to the lodge, of which 4 would have a private pool.

Where do u begin. I booked this trip months ago and was so looking forward to it,I had a change in my circumstances and the staff were so accommodating an cheap me Re-schedule

The pictures you see on social media does not do this resort justice,it’s insanly beautiful in real life,I could not believe believe this was in Ghana

The food omg was perfect,we paid extra to have dinner by the beach ..less than £10 and it was the best thing we did my husband and I were in our own world

We had our private butler who was very attentive to us and made sure we had the best night

In regards to the rooms we went for room 4 and the views were 10/10 waking up to the ocean was a dream come true ..if I’m to tell u all the good things about this resort I will right a book..book this place and u will never ever regret it ..we had the best anniversary here and I will certainly go back anytime am in Ghana🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭💙

Beautiful, stylish resort set in a sheltered cove worthy of a James Bond movie - check out their luxury chalet rooms on the 'island'. Four-star prices, but you get five-star gourmet food, service and presentation - where better to enjoy a vodka martini on the beach? We played volleyball, ate a nouvelle cuisine lunch on the terrace, swam in the calm sea, paddled a canoe and enjoyed Lou Moon's exotic home-made ice-cream (try the lemongrass, or ginger and honey). Well worth the 6km drive from Axim town on a well-maintained laterite road - our taxi driver had no problem making the trip, despite the unexpected rain in August.

Unless you're driving a four wheel drive vehicle, you would struggle to access this lodge as the road to the place is terrible. On rainy days, the road simply becomes inaccessible.
Bay beach rooms are tidy and gives you a stunning ocean view. I would recommend these rooms as the island cape executive bungalows are overpriced and do not give value for money. The hillside rooms are dormitory type rooms and do not have any uniqueness attached to it for the price.
Overall it is a secluded and private lodge and offers a relaxed atmosphere with water based activities such as kayaking, surfing offered.

Overall, Lou Moon draws its potential from the beautifully designed rooms and landscape and the excellent breakfast, food and service level at its Restaurant.

However, the exceptionally poor water quality at its private beach in November 2015 was a major downside to our stay. In spite of regular cleaning by the Hotel staff, beach and water remained covered in plastic and biological waste, making swimming not a particularly pleasant experience.

Finally, the rude tone used by the Manager at the reception during check-out did not match the otherwise high-standard of hospitality: When I found a small mistake on one of the food bills, the Manager started to dispute this rather petty issue (worth 10,- EUR) and claimed it would take up to 50 minutes to solve it, as he would need to inquire with the waiter in charge of the bill, who was not at work yet. After a while of rather annoying discussions, the bill was corrected. I would recommend requesting to sign-off your food bills after each meal, to avoid any such hassle during check-out.

Lou Moon Lodge is a perfect illustration for the combination of the words "refined", "perfect", exquisite", "charming", "peaceful".
The rooms are beautiful and decorated with great taste. Attention is paid to every single detail. The service is great, and hotel employees are friendly. The food is fantastic and meets up to the standards of the rooms. This is definitely a place I would recommend to those looking for a comfortable, refined, quiet and peaceful holiday. I've been to many hotels in West Africa, and this is by far the best one I've ever been to.

The only small issue is that credit card payments are not accepted.

We arrived via dirt track roads, without a 4x4 I don't know how others would reach the security gates to the resort on the bone shaking paths. As we entered we were greeted and was advised that as we weren't staying in the resort entry was £18.43 per person and this was access to any activities. I wondered what if you didn't want to part take in any activities as we had senior citizens in our group. I realised that it was the access fee even if you just wanted to look at the sea in this resort. Bit pricy in my view but everything was in this place. Wouldn't actually be on my list but I was part of a group and I just tagged along from other's reviews of the place.

You were given a free complimentary drink, for that entry price I'd expect a dance too but hey ho. I came for the swim so into the cove I went, beautiful and secluded and not too many people around in the resort, not sure if everyone was still asleep. The toilet's also acted as the changing rooms! With such a posh resort you'd think they'd invest in proper separate changing facilities probably placed near the water itself and not the long walk back to near the entrance? where are the planners when you need them?.

After the salty water I used the resorts swimming pool. They could of made it more user friendly as one of the seniors in the group had trouble finding the stairs onto the pool side and also into the pool. No life guards for the pool! bit worrying as it's such a recommended and revered resort?.

So then came lunch. We'd ordered well before time so everything should have been ready. You'd think so at those prices. Some ordered the 'fish of the day' sounds nice doesn't it? today it was Barracuda - grilled. A predator amongst fish but this time it lost to humans!. A portion of this predator with a side order of chips/yam chips/rice/French fries will set you back £18.90 per person. What is it with this place and a simple salad, the staff had problems with language, the understanding of it. I didn't want a full Caesar Salad, a full on war salad, i just wanted a simple tomato, lettuce, onions, probably throw a few olives in and "BOOM" that's simple. After asking twice I said forget about it, just give me BBQ chicken wings and French Fries, even that came to £15.20. I should of went for the 'fish of the day'.

The x6 BBQ chicken wings arrived and everyone else's dishes arrived but not my French Fries, I think they were actually ordering it from France because it never arrived!. I called the head of the restaurant over and remarked that it'll be nice to have the wings and French fries together? "2 minutes" came the reply. 2 minutes came and past. When a Ghanaian tells me anything related to time I know that it's going to be late or it'll never happen, it's 1 or the other. Anyway, a full portion of French fries never did turn up, however he did rustle up a small person, enough for a person that was on a super diet but put it on the house because of the issues. I asked what the issue was when I didn't get the fries and the waiter claimed "there was a challenge in the kitchen?" Not sure what that translated to? was it because of Brexit, the word "French" could and should not be used until Brexit is finally done?.

One of the senior citizens ordered a vegetable stir fry with plain rice £14.55! the vegetables must of been delivered by drone! come on, for vegetables in some kind of sauce and boiled rice?. And the drinks? I looked @ drinks menu and they were more reflective of London's prices! all but one of us stuck to water we had already. If there's one thing I won't pay over the odds for, it's alcohol. One of the group had a Margarita, £8.29 in one of those cocktail glasses, he ones that were wide at the start and became smaller at the stem, an ingenious design!.

Total bill for access and lunch for 6 of us? £215.75.. Was it an experience of a lifetime as recommended by some? not really, Now if they only managed to get the French fries right then I may have changed my opinion but over priced and over recommended. I asked how much was a room for the night £320! not sure if that included Breakfast, lunch and dinner but I'd hoped so unless you were in a room where there was a glass floor below you so that you could see the Barracuda hunting @ night?.

I've been to other places that weren't as posh but the food was better and the service was also better so I think I'll give this one a miss if I'm ever in the area, especially the 4x4 adventure route to the resort.

My partner and I just returned from Lou Moon lodge where we spent the first half of our honeymoon. I'm not sure what we expected before we arrived but I can honestly say that every expectation we had was exceeded. The staff really cannot do enough to help you and are extremely friendly. To get her we flew 40 minutes from Accra to Takoradi (which is pretty cheap by European standards) and then the airport provided a taxi collection which was 150 Cedi's each way and about 1.5 hrs.

We stayed on the island which we would thoroughly recommend. I know it is difficult to pay for this accommodation if you are not from Ghana as it is by bank transfer which incurs quite a lot of fees but what we didn't know was that the price included breakfast and dinner. The food was one of many highlights of this trip. The chef is second to none and each lunch and dinner brought a new and incredible menu.

There are lots of complimentary activities including table tennis, volleyball (which it turns out is not one of our strong points!!!), archery, paddle boarding and kayaking. The beach is beautiful and the walk across to the island where our room was was equally beautiful.

A lot of seaweed gets washed up on the beach each day and the staff do a fantastic job of cleaning it up. The deck chairs on the beach were set up for us each day with a mattress and clean towels.

The room... where do I start? We honestly have never stayed anywhere like this. Waking up surrounded by the ocean and just lying in bed listening to the waves was just magical.

There was no wifi in the rooms on the island but that was perfect. No tv in their either so you really can just relax and enjoy the surroundings. For those of you that need wifi, there is wifi in the bar area.

We really cannot recommend this place enough.

In terms of things to be improved, we really cannot think of anything at all! We would stay here again if we were ever to return to Ghana.
