Katavi is the third largest national park in Tanzania, that is located in the south-western area of Tanzania. I stayed two days in Katavi National Park in January 2019. The landscape of the park is very fine; consisting of grassy plains, bushy savannah, woodland and muddy pools where animals come to drink. The fauna is very rich in Katavi National Park. In the park, during day safaris, we have seen: - lions, leopards - big families of elephants, - huge herds of buffaloes - beautiful roan and sable antelopes - spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals - other mammals, e.g.: zebras, giraffes, large herds of buffaloes, lesser kudus, Grant’s gazelles, warthogs… - hippos grazing on the pool banks - a lot of beautiful birds. Taken together, I highly recommend to visit Katavi National Park

Everything about our stay was made difficult by the manager and agent. Even though the camp was empty (the only one open in Katavi atm), they made us wait for 5 hours to find out if we could stay, sent the invoice to the wrong place, had the manager harass us multiple times for payment with the agent in Dar on the phone, provided sub-par service and generally just made things very difficult for us. The pool was green, the wood on some of the chalet balconies rotten, mouldy tea and very understaffed. Will not be returning.

Response from Bruce Fox, Owner at Katavi Wildlife Camp
Responded 28 Mar 2021
Thank you for taking the time to write this review, we are very sorry that Katavi Wildlife Camp was disappointing for you. It is extremely difficult to operate such a remote camp (2 days drive from Dar es Salaam) in the midst of a global pandemic, with, as you point out, an empty camp for much of the time. You arrived at camp without a booking, so no preparations could be made in advance, and no supplies of fresh produce could be obtained. It is highly unusual for guests to arrive without a prior booking at such a remote location, and normally all payments are done with the reservation office and the manager would not be involved in any of this. I have re read the messaging thread pertaining to your stay and refute the claim that you were made to wait 5 hours to find out if you could stay. There is a message logged at 13:55 advising us that you had arrived at camp and wanted to stay, and the reply to confirm that you could stay as you had already arrived and no other camps were open, was sent at 13:58. At 1606 I can see a confirmation that you had already been sent a payment link but were out on a game drive and not waiting in camp. Payment was not made until the following day. The pool is not a shared pool for the camp, but part of the suite, with the lack of bookings the normal pool management is unviable. I apologise if you were given this room to stay in, instead of one the the tents without a pool, bearing in mind its poor state.Unfortunately, there is a global collapse in tourism, which has crippled the ability of operators to maintain camps and keep a full quota of staff without income. We kept the camp open with a skeleton staff, to keep them in work and to honour existing bookings (for which we sent in additional staff and supplies). We accept that it was a mistake to offer you accommodation in the only camp open in Katavi and will certainly learn from our mistakes.

My wife and I, and four friends just spent three nights at Fox's Katavi Wildlife Camp. It was great. The camp is tucked in along the side of a great plain, in which a river runs through. Each room and the main dining / congregating area looks out on the plain, which is constantly full of different wildlife. The entire area is just booming with game. The area is massive so you can cover quite a lot of new ground on the game drives. The guides were great. Very knowledgeable and friendly. The camp manager was great, always made sure we were happy and taken care of. The food quality was excellent, and plentiful. The fact that these camps are so open aired places make it a great get away during these times. You are always able to social distance at these camps. Each banda is very private and quite far from each other, and the main areas are large and accommodating to social distancing. The people in the camps were willing to take any measure you'd like them to, in order for you to feel comfortable. We really enjoyed our bandas. They were very clean and comfortable. It made you feel like you were camping but protected from the wilderness. Absolutely fantastic.

We spent 3 nights and saw lots of hippos and birds. We were probably a bit late in the season because the bigs herds of elephants had gone but the park is absolutely beautiful. The camp was ok but could do with a bit of maintenance. Impossible to get warm showers because the solar panels were in the shade of the trees. The little plunge pool was not clean at all. Every body working in the camp was very very nice.

Fell in love with Katavi and this camp. The accommodation is comfortable and rooms and toilets spacious and clean. The location of the camp, is amazing with a great view over the plains and the staff were friendly and extremely hospitable. The Hippo Pool is a must visit location and we spent hours sitting alongside it and 'enjoying' the smells and sounds of hundreds of hippos wallowing in their own poop :) Had a great team of guide and driver in Obedia and Kevin and enjoyed some great birding and drives along the river. The camp is small and cozy and gives you a very 'personal' feel as on most nights you dine at a large table with the rest of the guest. The food was not great compared to the two other Foxes Camps we stayed at but definitely not bad.
