After reading the mixed reviews from Brits but great reviews from Spaniards, I was hopeful that we would enjoy it and I was not disappointed.
Our experience was absolutely wonderful!
The hotel was clean, our room was very quiet (facing the street rather than the courtyard) and the facilities were fantastic.
I will admit, the hotel does cater more for Spanish guests in terms of dining times and entertainment being on quite late but there are children's activities like water polo and football on during the day also, on an hourly schedule.
The pool is really lovely and there were never more than 20 people in it, however, the sun loungers do usually get reserved with towels early on in the day which can be annoying.
We arrived at lunchtime but as we were half board we didn't see the food until dinner. In the meantime we had bumped into a few other guests from the UK, all of which told us the food was 'shocking' and the staff were awful.
We went in with an open mind however and I cannot stress enough that the food was excellent. However, I will say that it's not to everyone's taste.
The food was authentically Spanish, tapas, freshly baked warm breads, oils, several meats and fish being grilled at the live cooking station, salads and fruits. The mediterranean diet! Every night is different of course, one night was seafood night with freshly grilled king prawns, mussels etc. One evening there were whole roasted ducks, another evening was steaks (albeit they were a bit tough).
There's always a selection of rice and pastas and chips so even if your kids are fussy they should be ok.
I completely understand it's not to everyone's palette but to say it's bad food is simply not true.
At breakfast there's a fresh omelette station and you can even help yourself to champagne at the entrance when you come in.
There are churros, pastries and more cakes than anyone could eat. You better believe our kids were piling their plates sky high.
As for the staff, you could tell that there general experience with Brits possibly wasn't always the best, some were a bit standoffish at first but once they realised we weren't going to complain about everything they were absolutely lovely. Also, just knowing a few standard phrases in Spanish does go a long way. They really appreciate it! And it is true, a lot of them don't speak much English but there is always Google translate.
Mealtimes can get a bit chaotic later on but we always got there early and it was fine.
Now for the location. Absolutely great. I'm disabled so I can't walk hugely far but the beach was less than 5 minutes on foot, very clean and very shallow quite far out so great for the kids.
La Pineda is also much quieter than the neighbouring areas like Salou.
All in all, we had a fantastic break and would go back tomorrow.
BUT, if you want a holiday with more Brits and your british home comfort foods, I suggest you look elsewhere because La Hacienda is authentically beautifully Spanish.
First thing to be aware of is that this resort is mainly geared up for, and made up of Spanish tourists. So there are hardly if any Ex pat bars and restaurants. However, although all inclusive we ate out in the evening 3 times and the food was fine although we had mainly pizza/pasta.
It has a good long sandy beach with a promenade, at one end of the bay is the Tarragona harbour with tankers berthed and an industrial outlook. The sea is reasonably shallow for kids although we did have some red flag waves one day. There was a nice cooling breeze on the beach compared to being at the hotel.
With regards to the Hotel La Hacienda there is no TUI rep and no display boards in the reception area although there are some for JET2. We found out that this is the first year that British tourists have been here which explained why 90-95% of the clientele were SPANISH tourists. So this is in no way a āTUIā hotel. Consequently the hotel is still geared to the Spanish guests with entertainment and activities predominantly in Spanish. They are trying, and are led to believe staff are taking some English lessons to help. We had no problem apart from some of the entertainment and activities. The pool area is ok, but you have to queue for sun beds particularly if you get Spanish weekenders.
In general the hotel is a little tired looking but is clean and tidy. All Rooms are singular for 4 persons with beds close/ next to each other. Bathrooms either have a shower over bath or a walk-in shower depending if been refurbished I think. Cleaner everyday and towels changed. Pool towels can be hired from reception for ā¬10.
There is a good choice in the all inclusive restaurant that should satisfy anyone with āBritishā food available.
One issue particularly in the evening is queuing for drinks at the bar..
This holiday was fine as we always make what you can but wouldnāt go to this resort again.
first night we arrived and got to our room the balcony door was open, we attempted to shut it but it appeared to be broken, went to the reception 5 minutes of having the room key to be told that no one could fix it until the following morning, this wasnāt ok with us as we have 2 autistic children who are a safety risk and being 4 floors up it was absolutely not ok for the balcony door to be left open after explaining this to the reception and refusing to stay in the room and wanting to be switched rooms we still got told we had to wait and that no other rooms were available.. after kicking off and telling them that my children could potentially kill themselves with the door being open and that it would be their/the hotels fault it they suddenly happened to find someone to fix it.
Who in their right mind would put a play area(slide swings etc) right next to water slides which are only āblockedā off by a chain which couldnāt even stop little children getting past? Ridiculous, it needs an actual gate to close that area off at least so children or little toddlers donāt accidentally fall down them, so dangerous.
The food was disgusting, we had to eat out majority of the week we stayed as a few of our party ended up being Ill and having upset stomachs. The food was repeated most nights and even leftovers reheated for the pool bar snacks.
The elder man behind the bar is so rude and actually told a member of our party to fck off as he didnāt have a token to get a drink.
Obviously we were in Spain so the entertainment was obviously going to be in Spanish but the entertainment if you can even call it that was awful.
The Waitering staff in the dining hall also favoured the Spanish guests over everyone else getting them their drinks first and ignoring everyone else that wasnāt Spanish
No way is this hotel worth 4 stars, the only thing nice about this hotel was the lobby.
First time staying here and it will definitely be the last
Food varied and as expected for all inclusive, love the idea that you have a token in exchange for a drink which means no empty/full cups around the pool. Entertainment very low budget but not too bad (mostly all in Spanish). Would come here again no problem.
Area around hotel has plenty cafes, shops, supermarkets and beach is lovely and close.
This was our 3rd visit to la pineda but 1st at this hotel. The staff were amazing in reception and sorted my mum with a mobility scooter and a ground floor room (we had previously emailed) you do need a valid disability card. This made her holiday much more accessible.
Were used to AI food so didn't expect much but we were actually very suprised at the choice of food on offer and and tbh how warm it was. Even the plates were hot. Were not breakfast people but managed to eat something on a morning. The chocolate fountain, candy Floss machine and served ice cream were a massive hit with my 2.
On our 1st night vanessa in the restaurant told us exactly what to do and what happens massive shout out to her , Salma and mercedes what fantastic staff..... we love Vanessa!
The sunbed thing is a farse but were beach people so we only stayed round the pool 2 days and qued up at 9.50 and got sunbeds. We also spent days at the Waterpark where sunbeds are only 7 euros anyway.
The pool is fantastic ..
Let's move on to the best part... the Animacion team.. massive massive shout out to GaGa , he made our holiday along with bonbon and the rest of the team. My little girl is super shy but she went to kids club and joined in mini disco, both my kids loved Gaga so much and we'd return just to see him!! There is so much to do here for children ,teens and adults tbf we loved aqua gym and the evening entertainment.
Our room was fine , cleaned every day , plenty of space and just what we needed. The hotel itself was immaculate we were very Impressed. Location wise wasn't as close to where we usually stay a good 20/30 minute walk up to aquapolis but there's plenty of shops nearby and the beach is 10 min walk. Overall I cannot recommend this hotel enough and will happily be returning....
The exterior of the hotel does look amazing and when you walk into the lobby it matches the exterior everywhere is clean and constantly being cleaned. Itās one of the few hotels weāve been to that has such a high standard of cleanliness and this goes from the lobby to the pool area to the dining hall.
Selection of food was good. There was always something to eat even if it was just chips for the fussier members of the family!!!! good selection of drinks and other all inclusive items. I didnāt really understand the all inclusive part of it as itās set out different to what Iām used to so donāt feel that I made the most of it however what I did have was nice. You are allowed mini Cornetto twisters and magnums from the bar by the pool as well as chips hamburgers hotdogs pizza slices, anything that you do buy I believe you get a discount on
The Pool area opens at 10 oāclock but I suggest youāre down waiting for the dreaded sunbed ā dash by 9:30 having said that it wasnāt as frantic as I have seen in other places but we did go just before the schools broke up so canāt say what it would be like in full peak time Bus system is easy to use if you take a right out of the hotel cross the road at the supermarket on the corner next door but one is the bus planna shop where you buy a rechargeable bus card. This allows you so many trips on the bus we initially bought a 20 trip card for ā¬16 and topped it up with another 10 which was ā¬6 later in the week and took the bus to Tarragona to go shopping and into Salou a few times to the beach and for the nightlife both journeys were between 10 to 20 minutes we really enjoyed this holiday. The only thing that I would say let it down was that the bar staff, especially at the pool bar during the day were a little bit abrupt , on one occasion making my daughter cry but other than that, everything else was fine
