We just returned from a 2 week stay at the Royalton in Santa Maria, Cuba. It was fantastic.

Our butlers (Alexis and Maria) were exceptional. They meet you every morning to assess your needs for the day. We didn’t have much for special requests of them, but we got to know them well and enjoyed the morning banter tremendously. They threw in a few surprises for us as well, which added to the enjoyment of our trip, including a 3-piece band showing up in our room one night and singing a couple songs for my wife and I.

Meals are turnkey and high quality. Breakfast and dinner are off the menu at the a la carte locations, and lunch comes with options – the quesadilla grill at the beach, order off the menu at the Sunset grill, or partake in the daily BBQ, which features a wide array of delicious options. There is also a weekly dinner feast that was a highlight. They also have a special dinner at the lower pool each week for returning guests, with musical accompaniment. Overall, the food exceeded our expectations.

The beach and water are as good as it gets. The beach stretches forever and is not crowded. You can venture down anytime in the morning and still get a palapa. The Royalton has its own section delineated on the beach - it’s quiet, without kids, and supported by beach and grill staff.

My wife would want me to mention how clean the washrooms were. There’s several around the complex, and they were very clean. I saw people taking pictures with the bathroom staff a tipping them for their efforts on their creative flower displays – that took some getting used to, but needless to say their commitment to cleanliness was very impressive.

The rooms were great, by Cuba standards. They were clean, everything worked, and the cleaning staff were friendly and efficient. Honestly, we didn’t spend much time in the room so I don’t have much to say other that the room provided everything it was supposed to.

The evening entertainment in the lobby was a very pleasant surprise. Every night there was music and/or entertainment. The smaller size of this resort helps to facilitate meeting other people, and evenings tended to be very social, and supported by 1-2 musical performances each night. There’s a very classy feel to the place, and we shared a drink with many people from around the world each night as we enjoyed the music, and occasionally jumped into some impromptu Latin dancing demos.

Our favorite part of the Royalton experience however, was the staff. We got to know several of them very well (Omar, Gelvis, Jose aka ‘Hector’, Noelvis, Michael Sosa, Antonio), and learned a lot about life in Cuba, the music, the culture, and their acute sense of humor which always provided a good laugh. We befriended a young sever (Liz) who taught us some key Spanish words each night at dinner, made us laugh every night, and made us appreciate the character of the Cuban people tremendously. It was sad for us to leave the dinner table that last evening, and to say goodbye to her.

We can’t wait to go back again.

When we got to the hotel, we were presently surprised with the set up and the vegetation. We have been twice to Cuba before but this was the best resort we have been to. They were very organized with the check in, which was fast. Our butler Was Mario. He was just amazing, very attentive, honest and helped us all the way.
The Resort is very intimate with lots of greenery, which was eye catching for me, it felt like i was in a little jungle with lots of palms and all kinds of trees and bushes. The grounds were very well maintained.
The room is modern, the touch ups are not the greatest but we did not spend too much time in the room, so it did not matter to us.

The cleaning was the beast we had in Cuba. Service was great everywhere, the staff at this resort is just amazing. The food is limited but it was delicious. My favorite meal of the day was The lunch with pork, sausages and sometimes beef on the charcoal, just delicious. Cud’s to Jose who bears the heat and keeps a big smile on his face regardless of how hard his job must be. One thing that I was missing the entire trip were the veggies, I love salads and unfortunately there was none during our stay. Breakfast was also a la carte, a bit limited, there were cold cuts, cheeses, some fruits, antipasto and a small menu for the eggs. You would have the option to go to the buffet at Memories which they take you by cart there, did not go, so not sure if there is a bigger selection(Royalton does not have a buffet, all restaurants are a la carte)

The beach was breathtaking, powdery white sand with turquoise water, great beach wait service. They would pass by a lot asking if you would like a drink, even if you had already one you will still get asked. They want to make sure you enjoy your vacation, amazing staff. There was a gentlemen at the beach who will clean the sand off your chair and help you set it up anywhere, regardless how long he had to carry it for you.

Keep it up Royalton and bring on some veggies :)))

We stayed 10 days in the Royalton to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary and a birthday.
The hotel was spacious, very clean and well laid out. The grounds were beautifully kept with many plants and flowers. The swimming pool had many loungers and the one we used ( near reception )always quiet. The beach, with ample loungers, was stunning. Beautiful clean fine white sand and turquoise sea.
WiFi was available in the reception area and at the lower swimming pool.
Our cabana was very comfortable and although needing a bit of tlc was more than adequate. It was lovely to see our daily towel sculpture and the plate of fresh fruit put daily in the fridge was a nice touch.
The staff, including the butlers, the waiters and waitresses, the cleaners and the gardeners were all polite, professional and cheerful.
The reason I haven’t given the Royalton 5 stars was the quality of the food. The evening meals, other than the buffet evening, were very similar for the 10 days. Portions were small, all the soup tasted the same even though called different names and there was very little vegetarian choices. We only ate a few lunches as we were dissatisfied with the toughness of the fish and meat from the bbq. We would rather have eaten Cuban cuisine and was surprised that this wasn’t offered each evening as a choice.

Got there very late at night. Check in consisted of everyone on the bus handing their passports over and then waiting for your name to be called so your butler can take you to your room. Dinners are reserved by your butler. Grounds are beautiful, as are the beach and the pools. Entertainment isn't great and its all done in the lobby. Food is very good for the most part, but they do run out of different food/drink items regularly. Butlers and servers were excellent. Hot water from the showers can be sketchy. We were told to start all the hot water taps in the bathroom well before you need it. Our last day we had cool/lukewarm showers. Don't forget anything as there are no stores for toiletries/sundries on site and sometimes the market shops aren't open or don't carry much unless its souvenirs.

My husband and i just returned from a 2 week vacation from Royalton Cayo Santa Maria and we are in awe with the quality and the service we received while staying at this hotel. We were treated truly like if we were royals, starting with our butlers Liam and Noelvis who made a spectacular job in surprising me for my bday celebration (with the help of Ana, our maid, thank you Ana!) My room was fully decorated, a warm bath full of petals was waiting for me in the room and they even prepared a special supper with flambé cake. All our requests were granted, change of rooms to a higher floor, bottles of wine in the room, lobster supper and much much more. My heart goes out to the entertainment team who has become like family now and our vacation would not have been the same without them!! Thank you Blanca, Jenny and Yani (Coquito) for the daily stretching, aqua gym, dance classes and so much more! Thank you Sosa for all the spectacular daily shows you put together and for always making sure we are happy and participate in the events. Thank you djs Jose Jr. and Jose Sr. for the awesome music and to the rest of the entertainment team Yesenia, Soto, Alejandro and Rey. We love you 💖 thank you as well to the people at the bars for the fun times and great drinks, Anileimy, Misbel, Alejandro, Mailyn, Tatiana and the list goes on as everybody just went above and beyond. The food was excellent, no complaints, different varieties every day, the quesadillas by the beach were a success and the lunch barbecue was awesome and fresh every day. Thank you to our two barbecue cooks that always greeted us smiling, we will miss you :-) Most importantly, the covid measures implemented were irreproachable, all the staff wears masks at all times, everything is cleaned beyond perfection, there is sanitizer at all corners and if you go to the gym (we went a couple of times when the weather was bad to make room for all the food :-P), there is an employee there at all times disinfecting every machine after every use. They take health measures very seriously, your safety comes first for the Royalton family and for that, a big thank you and shout out to the general manager Alejandro and assistant manger Oscar. Thank you both for welcoming us so warmly and ensuring that our stay was a very positive one. We will be back Royalton, we love you 💖 Bianca and Bobi

My wife and I spent a week vacation at the Royalton Hotel in Cayo Santa Maria in the last week of February 2020.

Last time we went to Cuba ( Cayo Santa Maria) was more than 10 years ago and my wife really wanted to return because of the beautiful beach.

...and indeed the beach is still beautiful with blue crystal water, super white sands etc.

Well this is the only beautiful thing about Royalton.

This is advertised as a 5 star hotel however realistically in any decent country this should be at best a 3.5 star hotel.
Rooms and furniture are run down, the TV is something of an old sort, door at the balcony didn't close etc.

Wifi forget it..you can get that only at the reception for 1 CUC an hour ( you do get 7 hours for free though).

Food it is what it is..forget variation ( same days they don't have butter some days they don't have other things; for ex. they don't have any mineral water; forget about avocados etc.).

Anyway regarding food, even before you go to Cuba you know that there is not too much to ask for.

The biggest problem I found was actually the service.

This hotel is couples only and it is quite small so they have 3 restaurants where you need to be sit down in order to be served. Nothing wrong with that if there were not several days when we actually needed to start raising our voice for somebody to brig us the menu. Getting water refill or a beer refill it's quite a task;nobody is asking you if you want another beer if you don't remind them that you would like to have another one.

I also felt that compared with Mexico they really expect a tip even if the service is way sub par compared with the Mexican resorts.

I will give an ex. as well: When we left, the bellboy came to take the luggage and off course we tipped him.

He brought the luggage in front of the resort where the bus comes to bring us at the airport. There is someone else who actually takes the luggage and puts it in the bus ; obviously that person expects a tip as well. I thought that tipping twice for somebody to take my luggage doesn't make sense and this "qualified" us for our luggage to be literally thrown in the bus.

Please note that we are not the type of couple that complain if we are seeing a fly in our room and I am not a huge fan of writing reviews either, however I think it's important for people to know what to expect.

Just had an amazing trip to Royalton Cayo Santa Maria during end of January. Our maid was Ana and she did an awesome job. Liam and Noelvis was our butlers for the stay and they did a top notch job. Bubble baths and champagne waiting in Our rooms. We did have one small issue of hot water ran out one day but was fixed within a few hours. Food was superb. Antonio at the 24 hour snack bar every morning had a smile on his face and made our mornings start off the best thank you so much. Bernardo and Yolandur at the lobby bar served us up amazing drinks day and night. Did not have any issues with our room for bugs as some people in other reviews had complaints. Beach was amazing, view and play in the water. Also there is a gentleman named Raxon who would clean off our beach chairs each time we would go to the beach, took care and watched out for everyone. The chefs and servers did an excellent job each and every night with meals. Would I every return to this resort the is a big yes. They truly make you feel like royalty. Thanks again to all staff at the Royalton. Anytime we had a question we got an answer. I can't thank you enough for making our trip and my birthday a special one to remember.

The comments I wrote for Trip Advisor in 2017 on my first visit to Royalton Cayo Santa Maria remain basically the same after this year’s fourth consecutive visit. At that time I wrote that the Butler Service and having the best beach in Cuba makes it a “Return to Place”. This has not changed.

In this review I can now personalize some of the wonderful people such as the Front Desk staff as Hilde, Yanirys and Dania. Management Team of Rooms Rooms Luis, Residence Mgr Salua, and Food Mgr Hector. Outstanding Butlers Ketia and Diego. Bellmen and Drivers [actually front desk assistants] Fernando, Leniel and Danys. Lesyan the Gardner who helped plant another tree for me as my Third Consecutive Visit commemorative coconut tree and marker went missing. Servers in the Snack Bar Kieneirt and Antonio are fun people.

On a cautionary note, mosquito repellent remains a necessity. Also bring corticosteroid cream to help alleviate the itch from the successful mosquitoes. If you are a light sleeper, ask for an end unit as inner suites have an adjoining door which allows late night chatter and patio sliding noise to come into your room.

With regard to the internet, it still is not great in Cuba but what is great is your phone provider’s Roaming Package. Telus has a great package at a reasonable rate and it works very well.

Staying at the Royalton with only 120 rooms compared to 3,000 person resorts is the right choice. Having travelled internationally over many years, I feel I can say that their service is second to none other than possibly cruise ships.

Went here for the first time last week for my husbands 35th birthday. I was very very quiet the full day we were there. ( Feb 9) We arrived late on the Feb 8th so could not take advantage of everything right away.

The morning buffet was good, eggs were made to order which was nice instead of sitting around under a heat lamp. Lots of fresh meats and cheeses available, as well as fresh bread and butter. Juice and coffee was served to us when we sat down, There was also milk and fresh juice avail chilled in the small buffet section. The crepes were very good. Neither my husband nor I got any stomach upset the whole week we were there. They had a special dinner on the Wednesday. Fresh grill outside with lobster tails the size of your head, chicken and pork. Assorted seafood, cold meats, cheeses, as well as some rice and other dishes were available. It was by far our favourite meal.

You need to be up very early to get a cabana by the pool.

The 24 hour snack bar was great. The burgers were really good, although sometimes they ran out of cheese or didn't have bacon, but it is Cuba. They did appear to run out of white wine near the end of the week which was a bit annoying, as I don't like to drink the sugary drinks in the evening.

We were in Bungalow 11, very close to the lower pool and 24 hour snack bar, and just a short walk to the market, which we loved. As I said it was very quiet the day after we arrived, but it did pick up later on in the week.

We went to Memories next door via the concierge, which was also a nice perk. Used the pool once and the Breakfast buffet once. Their food was def typical bigger resort food.

The pool bar ( not a swim up) bartenders were great! Very prompt and made the drinks great.

They did the typical resort entertainment daily, I would have appreciated a bit more modern music and not Spanish all the time or the same Bruno mars song.
At lunch, there was a grill avail beside the lower pool/snack bar.

Our Butlers were Mario &

We traveled with friends to the Royalton Cayo Santa Maria from May 18-25 th. This is a small resort with beautiful landscaping , very nice accommodations, good food and the best beach in Cuba. Beautiful blue water, white sand, simply breathtaking! The staff at the resort can’t do enough for you , very pleasant and fun to be around. We arrived at the resort to be greeted by the manager and the staff who made the check-in very easy by giving us a welcome drink along with our room keys immediately , then they delivered our luggage to our rooms. The butler gave us a walking tour of the resort and later booked our reservations for dinners, the food was the best I’ve had in Cuba with lots of selection. Two A la carte restaurants, a Sunset Grill / barbecue, there is also a beach bar that served the best quesadillas I’ve ever eaten. The resort was at 80% capacity but we never felt crowded and we’re always able to get amazing chairs at the beach. We had never previously traveled in May, we did encounter mosquitoes as this is their rainy season but we’re prepared with bug spray. There are two pools one quiet and the other had entertainment and music throughout the day, The pools also have lots of chairs and Bali beds. Overall an amazing week beautiful weather( it rained overnight) . We would recommend this resort to anyone traveling to Cayo Santa Maria. Having visited Cayo Santa Maria five times we have decided that the next time we would hire private transport from the airport. The bus ride was almost 2 hours and we have been told that private transport cuts almost 50 minutes off of the time it takes to get to the resort.
