Visited Arniston for a couple of days. We returned to our favourite cottages after far too long, this time with our children. We all had a great break and thoroughly enjoyed sitting front of the fireplace. The wood was very reasonably priced and and a generous amount of dry wood in the baskets. Rooms were clean, nicely sized and very child friendly. The braai area at the back is very secure and children could play without any worries. Absolutely loved the shower and warmed towels... a treat with the cold snap! Pictures on their site reflect what you can expect to see when you arrive and your hosts make you feel at home.

Mary and her staff did an exceptional job of making our large group that took over all 8 cottages to accommodate 25 of us . First night we braaied using two of the cottages braais. Inside fires had wood delivered which kept the rooms beautifully warm. Next day we went off for a circular drive to Barrydale & on return all cottages were fully serviced & restocked with wood

Always wanted to experience Waenhuiskrans and its authentic History. It happened to be raining. The stay at Seaside cottages was comfortable. The attending staff super friendly. Services were excellent. We bought wood for the fire place which was essential for cold weather. TV package was limited though. Cleaning service is provided. A worth while relaxing stay

Once luxury cottages have weathered and are now only barely habitable. Stove tops are rusted making cooking difficult. Kitchen and cupboards are straight from the 1980's! Kitchen utensils are of low quality. These cottages are situated in a prime position and we have been visiting since the 1990's.
Unfortunately they are now in urgent need of an upgrade and can no longer be called luxury.

We stayed in Cottage 1D for one night on 14 January 2011. I was a bit apprehensive, based on previous reviews, but I found most of these to be unjustified.

Many people called the furniture, structures etc. 'tired' - the only thing coming close to 'tired' was the receptionist! (Shame, must've been a long week...).

I think they may have acted on some of the complaints in previous reviews and have upgraded some aspects...our bathroom was very new and modern, and had a lovely huge shower cubicle, and even a towel warmer rail!

The kitchen / bedroom / lounge was all in one (carpeted throughout), but nice and spacious, with granite kitchen tops and all the kitchen appliances you could need. The bed was very comfortable, with good quality squeaky clean bedding. And the small balcony provided a lovely view of the sunrise.

I'll agree that the cottages should not be marketed as 'luxury' - I think most of the negative reviews stemmed from expectations not having been met. But they are definately very comfortable, very clean, and well-located (just a short walk to the spectacular main beach and caves).

The cottages are value for money - we stayed in another self-catering place prior to arriving in Arniston, where we paid slightly more and did not even get bedding or towels, or a cleaning service. And compared to the rates of other places in Arniston, rather reasonably priced.

Would I go again? Yes. In winter, I may want to stay in one of the downstairs units (which have fireplaces).

Just as a note: if you have not been to Arniston before, please note that the hotel has the only two eating facilities in town (bistro and bar / restaurant) - very good food and fabulous views. There are also no shops / cafes or petrol stations at all - with the exception of a vendor selling all-sorts from a small garage-like structure at the back of the hotel!

Hope you found this review helpful...

We booked an upstairs unit with balcony and sea view at Arniston Seaside Cottages directly, having looked at the website.

When we arrived to pick up the keys, we were met by the owners' friend who gave us a piece of paper with directions to the cottages by the sea. We drove down to the cottage, walked upstairs, opened the door and then left.

Whilst we were not expecting luxury, we were equally not prepared for the musty smell, dirty windows, tired decor/furniture/bathroom, or listening to the neighbours' conversations. In fact, the cleaner did not even appear to have been since the last visitors had left - her tip was on the table and their left-over food containers were still on the kitchenette work surface.

The cottage we were given bore no resemblance to the photos on the website and was certainly not a three star.

As a result, we left within a minute and took the last available room at the Arniston Hotel. Although it is quite a bit more expensive, we would definitely recommend the hotel over the cottages. (Especially if you are able to afford the sea view room!)

Arniston is a very pretty village, although very quite - the hotel is the only place to eat/drink as demonstrated by the number of local people in the bar and restaurants.

I truly love Arniston and staying at Arniston Seaside Cottages is the best. Its an awesome place if you value quiet and fresh fish. Great place to relax. And pet friendly, so its a great escape for whole family. No tolerance of drunken and disorderly teens and no loud music. Great value accomodation options are available and the sea is a sea shell's throw away.

We arrived in Arniston just prior to sunset. After viewing the Southern Right Whales for an hour we decided to find a room. We saw a sign for Arniston Seaside Cottages and pulled in. We phoned Mary who was came to the office in 5 minutes, gave us some fire wood and a key and told us to eat at the Arniston Resort and Spa hotel. After a fabulous dinner we turned into our cottage for the evening. Much to our surprise it was huge! A two level 3 bedroom 2 bath house! Although, the cottage wasn't heated, each bed was equipped with an electric blanket making for a very cozy nights sleep. The kitchen was well equipped and looked like it would make a great vacation stay during the summer months. The next morning I ventured out back onto the patio to discover a very private area containing a grill, outdoor shower and a great spot to enjoy an evening meal. The public beach is just down the road a very short distance away. We only stayed the one night and continued our road trip the next morning. It was a fantastic surprise to come upon without any prior planning.

The best accommodation of our Durban to Cape Town travels.

Close to the beach, beautifully appointed rooms, plenty of bathrooms, well-equipped kitchens, friendly and efficient staff.

Everything you could want from self-catering accommodation...and more!

Rustic coastal with style.

This place is beautiful and is perfect for people travelling with dogs! The location near to the beach and also to the Waenhuiskrans cave is ideal. They even accommodated our family in the enclosed unit so the dogs would have space to run free. Will definitely be back!!!
