Few other reserves offer as complete an outdoor experience as De Hoop - sea, sand dunes, the vlei, a floral sensation of rare fynbos plants, diverse antelope and the Potberg Mountains, with world class whale watching in season. Activities are diverse and guests choose between various day walks through the rich fynbos plains or along the deserted coastline or mountain biking along the many gravel roads. Accommodation ranges from neat campsites to luxury suites. Onsite restaurant open daily, and day visitors welcome.

Visitors are consistently impressed with the cleanliness, including pristine buildings and the charming touch of fresh flowers. The hotel's atmosphere is frequently praised for its captivating outdoor spaces and the breathtaking De Hoop area. Although a majority consider the hotel to provide a worthwhile nature experience, opinions on value for money are divided, with some pointing out high costs for certain amenities and advocating for room renovations. My wife and I spent three nights staying in De Hoop and I would have happily spent as many more again. We stayed in the historic former horse stable, but other than the two-part door, there wasn't much on the inside to make one think of a stable. The bed was very comfortable and the bath was spacious. We were warned about "naughty baboons" so kept the door and windows closed when not in the room, but they did not put in an appearance. The food in the restaurant was top flight and very attractively presented. There were fresh, native flowers (from outside the Reserve) on the dining tables. We were there to enjoy the natural history, so took part in a bird walk, marine walk (tidepools), trip to see the vulture cliffs, and a boat trip on the vlei. All guides were excellent and very interesting to talk with. It was a good tip to take our own vehicle to the marine walk so that we could stay after and walk along the shore on our own. The grounds are beautiful, with zebras and antelope always in view. The road in is dirt and bumpy. The staff were helpful and welcoming. Everything was as we would have wanted it.

Travelling up the East coast de Hoop offers the best value for money for a comprehensive nature experience whatever your budget. No over the top tourist trap pricing for overseas visitors nor overhyped game experience.
Access is via a longish stretch of good quality gravel apparently slippery in wet weather. Multiple choices of accommodation from the fully self sufficient to ourselves who booked a suite, which turned out to be the Honeymoon suite which is beautifully appointed and very conveniently situated near the restaurant but peaceful with a great river view,(only possible improvement suitcase stands).
We stayed two nights and the first evening joined the evening drive which was enjoyable,( although very pricy), and gave an idea of the scenery and game available, including an unadvertised cobra!, the snacks offered were very familiar to South Africans but should have been explained for the benefit of overseas visitors who missed out through ignorance.
We walked along the river and through interesting flora and some fynbos. We also drove down to Koppie Alleen for excellent beach and cove walks. (It should be made clear that this could be a challenge for young families with all their 'equipment' as the parking is a fair walk from the first beach).Great hiking areas and also cycling.

The Fig Tree restaurant is a hidden gem which offers top class food: the breakfast buffet was superb both for cold and hot breakfasts. We had two outstanding dinners and sampled both the main courses each evening for which one can only offer praise for presentation, decent portion size, taste and variation. A wide variety of wines is also available.
Service overall is excellent.

We stayed in the Vlei cottages was called pelican. There is a 30 minute drive to the reserve on a dirt track which was actually quite fun. we saw zebra antelope ostriches baboons and a Cobra. !! Food in the restaurant was very good considering how far away this place is from anywhere we took a trip down to the beach, which is truly breathtaking. We took a boat trip. On the vlei and the guides were very informative worth doing. The accommodation is probably three star but was very clean and everything worked a very slight criticism is that it was quite cold in the evening and there was no heater but there was an electric blanket which was a real treat. If you’re nature lover and warm breathtaking views and good food you won’t be disappointed. Staff again were very helpful.

A day visit would not be worthwhile to enjoy the reserve in its full existence. Since day visitors have to be out early again you have the reservation almost to yourself from 3 / 4 pm. We could see all animal species and had both the dunes and the beach to ourselves. The booked tour was also very worth seeing, we learned a lot of new things.
The accommodation costs a little, of course, but you have to keep in mind that it is a reserve and there are only a few accommodations. The “smell” of the accommodation is only due to the fact that it is older accommodation. We just always aired before bed and on arrival. Dinner consists of a 3-course menu. Also here: Yes, it is a bit more expensive but the quality is unbeatable and the staff and their service excellent! You have to know what you're getting into. The money was worth it.

The location is great (inside the reserve) and perfect for all activities to be done there. Rooms are a bit old style and maybe a renovation would be requested especially considering the price requested which was extremely expensive. Additionally the service provide by the staff was just ok, by far lower compared the typical outstanding kindness we found throughout South Africa during our trip in the country. Restaurant was ok. For the trade off between price, room and service I would not go back there.

Thank you for your review, Daniele. We are disappointed to hear that we let you down. Our accommodation is styled in the fisherman cottage style that is typical of the area. We are sorry that this style did not appeal to you. But we are pleased that you enjoyed the beautiful reserve and all the activities. We apologise for any inconvenience you experienced and hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in our beautiful country. Kind regards, The De Hoop Team

The De Hoop Nature Reserve should be seen, especially the dunes and the largely untouched, wild nature. A day trip should not be worthwhile, as you have to leave the park until dark. The journey over an unpaved road to the De Hoop Collection takes about an hour from the nearest town. The De Hoop Collection is lonely and beautifully located on the water (a veil with brak water) and impressive at first. The beach and the dunes can be reached by car from there but again half an hour. The property offers various activities, each with a guide. You can also start on your own by mountain bike, car or on foot. Zebras, ostriches, birds, monkeys and other animals can be seen in the great outdoors and come close to the property.
We lived in an Opstal House and were not very enthusiastic. The decor is rather museum-like and you feel a bit like in the 50s. There was also a lack of comfortable seating outside and especially sun protection on the terrace. If you are not self-sufficient (which would be a considerable expense given the conditions just described), you can take an a la carte or buffet breakfast in the only restaurant, the "Fig Tree", which I would describe as rather below average. In the evening there is (only) a three-course menu that is quite expensive by local standards, whereby you can choose from two starters and three main courses. There are a lot of friendly staff available, but it doesn't seem to be so properly organized. The food looks very elaborate, but then falls short of expectations. That seems to me to be the general dilemma there. There is a certain luxurious habit, which is expressed by the appearance of the receptionist and also (partially) the other staff. However, these expectations are not met.
I also found the procedure a bit strange, not even refunding the prepaid food for the following days in case of an early departure.

We stayed one night here as part of a road trip around the Eastern and Western Cape. To reach De Hoop you need to go down some long dirt roads, and at the end is this wonderful oasis, with the De Hoop Collection accommodation placed around the vlei. We stayed in the Otter Suites which were next to the vlei, surrounded by the bird song and with elands, ostriches and more wondering around amongst the huts. The suites were very well furnished with high quality linen, soaps, etc and everything was impeccably clean and tidy. Our rates included a massive three course, delicious dinner at the restaurant as well as a generous breakfast - it's a great place to hang out, watch the sunset with a G&T or have a glass of red next to the cosy fire in winter. Take some time to also head down to the unspoiled, pristine beach at Koppie Aleen and spend some time poking around the rock pools at low tide. Also look out for Delfrenso (spelling) who is a local manager and guide and who is wealth of information and wonderful tales about the local geography, history and nature.

The accommodation is very good with comfortable beds and plenty of space in the cottage style suites. Lighting in the rooms is very dim and the electric sockets in the rooms are the A style with switches placed in such a place that the insertion of an adaptor fouls the switch. Food is pretentious but main courses for dinner were. mediocre. A lamb dish on our first evening was JUST passable but serving 5 small and overcooked prawns as the protein element of a main course on our second evening was unacceptable. We had experienced better food at small restaurants. I complained to our waiter who apologised but the kitchen manager was not bold enough to speak with me. Service to our group was incredibly slow on both evenings - our group was seated bu 19:00 and still at table at 21:10 having just received our dessert. Animal and bird sightings were relatively sparse apart from cormorants, ibis and a few common mammals. I would not consider returning.

The hotel is well organized. The rooms (suites) are arranged around the restaurant or the general area in such a way that you can virtually observe the animals from the window.

Breakfast and dinner were delicious and nicely arranged.

We stayed there two nights and it was worth it. You can take a long or short trail from the hotel hiking, mountain biking, as well as a trip to the coast and hike through the dunes. The staff is friendly and motivated throughout South Africa as before.

We are glad to have made this stop and recommend it to everyone who has brought nature and outdoors as a reason to travel to SA.

Beautiful location with free animals in front of the cottages! You get there after 50km of dirt road at about 50km speed from Bredasdorp. The cottages are very cute, rustic style!
Even though it was winter we didn't feel cold thanks to the fun coil for heating and the thermal blanket in the bed! The breakfast buffet is not exceptional while it is possible to have an English breakfast for a surcharge! Three-course dinner of your choice! Our arrival was unforgettable… with ostriches and Kudus in front of the door of our cottage. The next day a small family of baboons greeted our return. If you love silence and the darkness of the night interrupted only by the sound of free animals around you, this is the right place. We advise you to stay more than one night to also enjoy the experience of whale watching 1/2 hour away by car.

Good morning Stan You will be fine as the roads are well maintained for gravel roads. I am sure you are aware that gravel roads require slow speeds, as they can be treacherous if travelled at speed. It is a wonderful drive, and you should have numerous sightings of Blue Cranes, the national bird. A stop at Klein River farm stall, if coming up from Cape Town is recommended to stock up on glorious farm products and cheeses. I hope you have a fantastic trip.

Can you tell me what are the chances of seeing whales in January? Thank you.

It's not the best time but quite honestly the spot is so beautiful and there is so much to do and great food to eat it might well make up for it . I don't think there is anywhere in SA you will see whales at that time of year but maybe try shark cage diving which obviously isn't the same thing but it's equally amazing . And if you don't want to go in cage you can watch from the boat which is also fantastic .
