We were only here 3 nights but wished we didn’t have to leave at all. What a gorgeous place. The setting was idyllic. We’d come for the birds and had no idea there would be such a wealth of other wildlife. An otter passing me on foot as I sat having a brew one morning will be one of my holiday highlights forever. We loved that guests were free to wander freely and our walks back to our suite after our evening meal were wonderful. A zebra in torchlight is pretty special. The atmosphere throughout the reserve was amazing - such a friendly and welcoming team and it was lovely to see guests with young families sharing the experience with their children. The beach area is stunning and we were lucky to see whales, dolphins and a puff adder! The nature drive and vulture trip with Vincenzo were brilliant and we learnt lots which we loved. We liked that you could pick which trips you wanted. The food was surprisingly good for a set menu (and we don’t eat meat) and the wine selection stunning - thanks to Claus for making some amazing selections for us. Something special which we feel privileged to have enjoyed for a few short days. Thanks to everyone. These special moments don’t happen by chance.

We stayed for a weekend in one of the Cloete Suites and were pleasantly surprised by a number of things. Firstly, the room was nicely decorated and had a very comfortable king size bed with mozzie netting. The whole site was also much vaster than we had expected, which added to a feeling of serenity, where antelopes, baboons and whatnots were roaming free in big numbers. The location on the shores of De Hoop Vlei was, of course, beautiful. Now, another thing that got to be a pleasant surprise was the quality of the food. The head chef must have been totally inspired this weekend, because the food was just so lekker with an extensive, interesting and very affordable wine list to go with it. To top this really nice experience off, the staff proved to be most helpful, professional, friendy and just briliant. But we can't push enter without mentioning Dennis in the bar/restaurant by name. He is just phenomenal.

We had a marvellous stay here. You walk amongst wildlife (Ostrich and Cape Zebra most noticeably) Dassies covering the grass in front of the cabin, Whale watching in the early morning and great guided tours. To cap it all the food in the restaurant is excellent. It all helped us celebrate our special holiday.

We stayed in an equipped cottage, and it was indeed very well-equipped! My congratulations and thanks to the person who thought of installing electric blankets in the beds for the colder months. The scenery is beautiful, the surroundings are calm and quiet, ideal to enjoy nature, in comfort. We had a great meal at the restaurant and received good advice on the wine. Our son enjoyed playing chess in the lounge.

I highly recommend visiting De Hoop if you want to experience all the beauty of what South Africa has to offer. It is the ultimate wildlife education for the whole family and offers many accommodation options for anyone's needs. The meal options at Fig Tree Restaurant are of excellent quality, with friendly staff ensuring all your needs are met. Book your guided tours with guide Dylan if you want an entertaining weekend. He is fantastic and will ensure you have a wonderful time at De Hoop.

We loved our stay at De Hoop. This place really is such a hidden gem and has such magnificent landscape and game viewing. We went during whale season and saw so many whales, which was so magical. The accommodation is absolutely fantastic. The staff was so friendly and informative.

My family and I stayed at De Hoop recently, and overall we had a fantastic time. We stayed in one of the Opstal Houses, which was quite spacious and well-equipped. It was also very secluded, and allowed us to fully unwind for nearly a week. We took many walks on the reserve, rode our mountain bikes daily, and just enjoyed the abundance of bird and animal life. The restaurant's food was good, though we mostly catered for ourselves. The staff were friendly and the overall experience was spectacular. However, we booked two activities during our stay: The cruise on the vlei; and the vulture experience. We found the prices for these quite steep, but since we like doing things as a family, opted to see it as an investment in our time together. Unfortunately neither of the guides that were in charge of our experiences were particularly good. They certainly knew the area and its animals, but they failed to engage with us, and we were generally underwhelmed and disappointed by the experience. The vulture experience in particular was disappointing, as it entailed not much more than a hike up a steep hill, from where we stared at the (gorgeous) vultures across the valley. But the information from our guide was scarce, and spending R550 per person on the experience seemed well over-priced. Despite this, we will most certainly be back to visit De Hoop in future. There's so much more to explore and enjoy. We just won't be spending money on the guided activities again.

Thank you for visiting De Hoop Collection and for your lovely comments. We are pleased to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us and that you could experience the wonderful bird and animal life of De Hoop Nature Reserve. However, we are disappointed that your experience on the guided tours was less enjoyable. This has been relayed to the department head and will receive our full attention. We appreciate that you have made us aware of this and look forward to your next visit.

The staff at De Hoop is very friendly and helpful. My mother (90) having to use a walking aid and not being able to climb stairs, mentioned that she would love to go to the coast, but unfortunately this was not possible any more for her. Dalfrenzo, the manager, went out of his way and asked me what height of steps she could still manage - he then had one one of the staff build wooden stairs with railing on both sides to make it possible for her to climb into the Safari vehicle that eventually brought us to the sea. Amazing dedication, thanks so much, we keep our stay in very good memories and hopefully will be back next year!

This was our first, much awaited trip to De Hoop. The reason for the long wait was either lack of availability, very high prices and some confusion in the past as to exactly which type of accommodation to choose.. It seems that the website has been worked on as there is more information now and better photos. The naming and configuration is not that helpful and so you need to consult the map and at the same time carefully read the descriptions to see what is what. We eventually chose the 2 bedroom "equipped Opstal cottage", which was well decorated, comfortable and near enough to the pool and vlei-side walk to be able to get there on foot. We took a walk and identified the Vlei cottages, also a good choice. The campers have a good campsite, with privacy, nice facilities and are also well positioned, facing the lagoon (vlei). We did not do any booked activities instead we walked, and drove to the beach to do the piece of Whale Trail that one can do. The drive to the beach is alot further than expected (definitely not walkable) but its a lovely drive and there is a wonderful beach that awaits. Take rock shoes if you want to snorkel at Hippo Pools. The facilities and showers at the Koppie Aleen site are good. We set off left for approx for 4km to do the piece of Whale Trail that people do on their last day of this well known hike - its a stunning walk with beautiful views and a few swim spots to choose from. The swim spots are closer to the start. There are rock hyrax and Black African Oystercatchers to see. Whales must be very visible from that vantage point when they are around. We loved De Hoop for its tranquility, birds and very comfortable accommodation. I give it 4 stars because one thing that is missing is a shady place to sit under outside the cottage. There is no "afdak" or shaded area for sitting in the afternoon, this is a pity as it means when you return from activities, if its hot, you need to stay inside. Animals and birds pass by and it would be wonderful to be able to watch them quietly from a shady spot.

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for taking time to write such a lovely review. It is wonderful that you were able to do the last bit of the Whale Trail, it is such a stunning walk and you are absolutely right, in whale season it is even better! Also, we understand that some of the trees might not be close enough to the accommodation. We appreciate your suggestion regarding a shaded area and will take it into consideration for units where the trees are too far off. We hope to welcome you back soon to our little piece of paradise!

Nicely located and nice suites (cloete suite). Breakfast and dinner are in the restaurant and of good quality. Large selection of good wines. Staff friendly. We had also booked the river cruise but that is not recommended. One cannot sail far up the river and the “guide” was not very enthusiastic and informative. Better drive and walk through the park yourself. A walk along the beach is highly recommended.

Thank you for taking time to write a review, Bart. The Cloete Suites were the last addition of luxury suites we added to our accommodation offering – we agree that they are lovely and the fact that they form part of the heritage area, just adds to the charm. We are happy to hear that you experienced our friendly staff, enjoyed the restaurant and our wine selection, we hope you popped into the walk-in cellar while you were there. Please accept our apologies for your disappointment in the guided boat cruise and thank you for bringing it to our attention. This gives us the opportunity to address this concern and improve our offering. Again, thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back to De Hoop soon.
