Detailed Reviews
Brakanes Hotel has a great location on the pier at the bottom of the Ulvikafjord with its own private sandy beach and a short way to Ulvik's attractions. The outdoor areas down to the fjord appear well-kept, with several pleasant seating areas, sauna, changing rooms and hot tub.
The hotel has refurbished the common areas and several of the guest rooms over the past year and appears inviting and modern, but with a classic old grandeur.
The guest rooms are small, but appear clean and well maintained. Several of the guest rooms are equipped with a balcony and overlook the fjord. Rooms consist of a flat-screen TV, work desk, wardrobe and an armchair. There is no air conditioning or minibar. The bathroom is small but clean and in good condition. There are no toiletries other than soap from the dispenser.
The hotel's common areas are clean and inviting. The hotel's restaurant has an exciting menu and offers a variety of local and international dishes. However, the price level appears to be somewhat high.
The hotel's breakfast is served as a buffet and has a rich selection of both hot and cold dishes. The order seems to be of high quality and the selection is larger and better than at many similar hotels.
The Covid-19 routines at the hotel seem to be well taken care of.
The level of service among the employees appears to be somewhat varied and the hotel should work to ensure this quality in the future.
All in all, I would recommend this hotel to others and visit the hotel again.

Stayed 2 nights in a single room on the ground floor, with access directly to the garden. Got a decent price through hotels.com . Average room standard, no frills, but impeccably clean The rooms are not serviced during your stay, unless you stay more than 3 nights - allegedly because of Covid regulations, possibly also to save money. The food in the restaurant Draumen was excellent (2 breakfasts and 2 dinners). Prices may seem a bit stiff, though. Excellent selection of local ciders, wide selection of wines, poor selection of beers. Efficient service the first evening, slower the second evening. Might well visit again.

We had a lovely stay at Brakanes, the upside being the fantastic view of the Hardangerfjord and the seaside with sauna and bathing. The food was good. The downside was the reception staff, which did not make us feel welcome. For instance, our room was ready one hour after check-in, and the didn't say they were sorry. Also, the maintenance was lacking, as there for instance was a mark of an old water leak in the ceiling, there was a large crack in the bathroom mirror, and there was a lot of dust under the bed.

Simple clean rooms and a breathtaking view over the fjord (don't cut corners, get a room with a view!). Advertised as 4* on booking.com it actually turns out to be 3* which justified somewhat the minimalistic approach (e.g. no body lotion or shampoo provided); for the price we didn't really mind and had come prepared anyways. This hotel is a real treat if booked after hiking up Trolltunga: the fjord right in front of the lake is stunning and you deserve the peace and quiet after the effort. Don't miss the opportunity to try the hot tub by the waterfront (50 nok per person for an hour). They've clearly put a lot of time and effort in their outdoor garden and it shows. Unfortunately the sauna was closed due to covid. Considered staying an extra night but decided to move on to our next destination, we will definitely recommend to friends and family and may come back ourselves if visiting this region once again. The staff was very welcoming and offered to extend our checkout to 2pm so we could relax by the garden before hitting the road again. Now that's hospitality!

We only stayed two nights here but loved it. We did upgrade to a fjord view room for 500 krone, which was well worth it as the view is stunning. The hotel put on a very nice breakfast with lovely views out over the fjord. You can hire kayaks, row boats etc if you want. Be aware there are limited places open for dinner, hence the hotel has a monopoly, which is quite expensive. We brought food with us.

Thank you for choosing Ulvik and Brakanes Hotel! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your upgraded room and the breakfast! The menu for the hotel has been carefully chosen by our food and beverage manager and kitchen managaer to suit a hotel of our size and our location. We also try to use as much local produce as we can in our food! We hope to welcome you back to our hotel! Kind regards, Anna Reception

I am reading reviews saying, the view isn't enough....... and do you know what, it was for us! What a spot!!!! We splashed out on a suite with a fjord view as there were 3 of us travelling; myself, my husband + my daughter of 24 years. When we stepped out onto the balcony we were blown away. We planned on walking during our stay and the walks available off the doorstep are amazing too. We stayed 2 nights + were very lucky with the weather + so were able to swim in the fjord. The sauna looking out over the fjord was on my list of things to do + it did not disappoint. All of the staff we interacted with were friendly, helpful + quite lovely. Breakfast choices were perfect + I really enjoyed the food in the evening. Only slight negative here was that we had paid for a room with dinner included + so had a set menu, which had soup, then a choice of 2 mains + 2 puddings. However, the choice was exactly the same both nights + I feel like there should have been a change of options. The grounds at the front of the hotel offer various areas to sit + enjoy the view; there are sunbeds which we did use given our luck with the weather; internally there are so many nooks and crannies with fabulous rooms to sit in in large groups or smaller intimate ones. We stayed in 5 different locations on our trip to Norway + they all could have done with a bit of TLC but I honestly do not know how you could stay in a location like this and not beam from ear to ear. LOVED IT!!!

The Brakanes Hotel in Ulvik is well past its days as a peaceful, luxury hotel. They seem to now cater to large tour bus groups, making it crowded, noisy, and unfriendly. Since they allow smoking on the balconies, the rooms themselves smell of smoke. The morning breakfast buffet was by far the worst we experienced in two weeks of touring Norway. The staff was frazzled by the large tour groups, and unlike most other places we stayed in the beautiful country of Norway, they never smiled or greeted the guests. Very overpriced for what you get.

One night as a group attendant. The only valuable in this hotel is the view. Although the tourist season is low and the hotel almost empty, they gave us rooms with parking view, demanding extra 65€ for changing room! Room facilities very poor. Breakfast bellow average (croissant, bacon...not today the staff said). View can not overcome this passeé hotel package. Choose something better.

Ulvik was a repositioning stop for us from Flam to the dinner at IRIS/Salmon eye, so we didn't expect much from the small town nor the hotel. But it turned out to be a surprise to the upside, compared to Flam Fretheim or Bergen Opus XVI hotel. We booked a premium room with Fjord view and what a view that embraced us upon entering the room. The hardinger Fjord with imposing cliffs and narrow pathway is one lawn away from our eyes. Our room was on 3rd floor and both balcony doors open out to the balcony with simple furnishing for an outdoor drink or dinner. The room has a light Nordic touch, light blue and light birch with mustard color very comfortable lounge chairs. Instead of the heavy or period decor, this furnishing style makes the room look airy, spacious and chic. Kudos to the taste. There is a decorative fireplace that adds a period touch but with a contemporary flare. The heating panel actually worked here.
The town was small with very limited food options other than the hotel itself or a Cafe next door, but that aside a walk along the river to watch how evening light and cloud moved around the seeing sun was extremely satisfying. The calm water makes incredible reflection of the world above. The view couldn't be better. The following day when we got to Rosendal to board Salmon Eye, our hotel room had frontal Fjord View as well but the cliff drop wasn't as dramatic as Brakanes view. Glad we took many pictures we did.
Other than that, the service was efficient and friendly, breakfast was good but not elaborate. No espresso machine in the room but there is one in the lobby and there is a tea kettle in the room.
All in, amazing view, chic room and all beyond our expectations.

Absolutely phenomenal view from this hotel! Not only were our balcony views amazing, but the lobby had a glass house type tea room looking out over the fjord! Staff were very friendly. Walking distance to the few little shops in town. We also did a hike while staying here. We had a 3 course dinner which was delicious!! The chef even adapted the meals to suit preferences. There is also a little beach by the dock. Heaps of starfish. Kayaking options. The only downside would be the lack of sound proofing. There was a Japanese tour group staying at the same time as us and could hear everything from them turning on a light switch, dragging furniture around and talking etc. Unfortunately the group was up past midnight bouncing balls and having a great old time which kept us awake and woke us. If we didn't have such noisy neighbours, we wouldn't have been able to fault our stay
