My husband and I spent 3 nights over the New Year at this resort. Our room and bathroom was very clean, functional and had the comfiest mattress and pillows. The pool area is perfect for relaxing and drinking a cold beer from the mini fridge (prices which are the same as at the resort which we love). The food at the resort is excellent and with fantastic DJ Mark Doyle we brought in the New Year in style. Thank you Scallywags!

Pros: Friendly staff, clean, nice location near both Main Street and beach yet quiet, free bikes to use Cons: WiFi was too weak to be used for anything except WhatsApp texts. While many may think WiFi isn’t important in such a location, it was a burden for us as it rained much of the time so couldn’t really leave the room. To be fair, I didn’t ask them to fix it as they suggested afterwards, though I’m doubtful it would have changed anything as the connection worked fine, it was just to weak (they asked a few questions about password, etc, none of which were the problem). The temperature of the water was dysfunctional. One day it continued to quickly vary from cold to scalding hot and back. Another time, it just remained scalding hot (my wife showered using the water from the sink). They also charged us for the room despite having already pre-paid it online. Ironically there was another couple at the desk the same time who had just returned after realizing the same thing, so doesn’t seem like a one-off. They don’t always have a staff member at the front desk. They do have a sign indicating a phone number to call, and a separate sign indicating a WhatsApp number, but many of us in Lombok are traveling internationally meaning we don’t all have mobile service, so this is useless. Took a while to find someone to help, and then same thing happened upon departure. The pool appears dirty and has an especially strong smell of chlorine, though I suppose that’s being used to try to clean it which is good. Lastly, a minor note but one I think highlights the care taken for the hotel, is that there’s a small path from the beach to the hotel to which they’ve posted a sign directing you to the hotel. But the arrow points the wrong way (and it’s not a sign that can be easily turned by someone making a joke, I even tried to do so to fix it but couldn’t). Seems small but this did cause me to get lost once resulting in a very frustrated wife.

We stayed here for 3 nights whilst on Gili Air. The staff were great and offered lots of great advice. The rooms were well air conditioned and clean. The outdoor bathroom was great as well! It is a short 5min walk to breakfast, which was a great buffet style with a mix of Indonesian and Western foods available. The only complaint would be the food was cold most mornings. You get free use of the sun beds at Scallywags Beach Club which we found handy for dumping our stuff whilst snorkling.

Since there are already a ton of reviews for Scallywags Mango, I'll cover a few things I didn't see in other reviews: 1) You can faintly hear the mosque, but it never woke me up (and I am a very light sleeper). Granted we always slept with the AC on, but I think the fan option would be sufficient white noise. You can definitely stay here without being bothered by the call to prayer, even if you are a light sleeper! 2) Breakfast and the Scallywags Beach Club is either a brisk 5 min walk or a 10 minute stroll. This didn't bother us at all, but we don't have children and weren't in a rush. 3) From the outside, Scallywags Mango looks like a small cinderblock dungeon, but once you walk inside you are instantly transported to a quiet oasis. We loved that there were multiple layers to our hotel stay - the fortress perimeter, the walled entrance to our large porch and garden, and finally our bedroom door. Even though there is 0 crime here, we felt extra safe and secure tucked away. It was also SO great to have the closed in and private patio so that you could take off your bathing suit before walking inside. 4) You get all of the perks of the Scallywags Beach Club hotel (like the free sun beds!), but Mango is cheaper and has a pool. 5) On that note, there are plenty of sunbeds available for hotel guests and they give you towels at the beach so you don't need to bring the pool towels from your room. 6) Staff was very attentive and fixed any issues instantly (like when our shower started spraying water everywhere). 7) Outdoor shower is excellent and we never saw a mosquito or bug in our room or bathroom. 8) AC is exceptional and you don't even need to leave it on during the day because the room doesn't get too hot. Pool is great, too. 9) Made to order breakfast takes 10-15 min even if you're the first one there. Order right away, directly from the people at the grill (the order wasn't always relayed from servers). 10) Their backup generator is clutch and worked well during the many power outages on the island. I would absolutely stay here again. I didn't see any hotels I wish I had booked instead.

We struggled to find any 5 star accom on gili air.. this was the best rated available for our stay. It is in the heart of the village and about ten min walk from the beach (where you have to walk for breakfast) which isnt ideal in the morning with a hungry small child. We only went there for breakfast 1 time out of 4 as the cleanliness wasnt okay. The buffet food was cold and uncovered and flies were everywhere. This isnt an acceptable standard. The staff are nice and polite and you can use the sunbeds here on the beach. We had lunch here too but that was also poor. I had an iced latte and the milk had gone bad - it was lumpy and curdled and they still served it to me. The room itself is okay - not luxurious but clean enough - only 3 sun loungers for all 6 rooms though. Wouldnt stay again as it is not what we are used to but okay for backpackers etc 3 star at best. Thanks to the friendly staff.
