Gili Air is a pristine jewel set in the Bali Sea, situated in one of the most picturesque locations on Earth. To the East, the majestic crater rim of Lombok’s Mount Rinjani, provides a picturesque backdrop to a stunning sunrise. To the West, the sun sinks behind the perfect cone of Bali’s Mt Agung as it releases all the colours of the rainbow. Sunrise Resort is situated in Gili Air’s top location - fine, white coral sand gives way to breathtaking snorkeling directly off-shore, accessible at both high and low tides (unique on Gili Air). Within 50 metres, lies a reef teaming with colourful fish and turtles in crystal clear water. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling or diving and always at idyllic temperatures (25-32°C).

I took a while after the conclusion of the year long drama I had with this establishment to decide whether or not I wanted to write this review as it is more about one very bad employee than the establishment as a whole. I am sure the hotel is great, and the staff as a whole I suspect is as well. However, my experience with a manager named Chris was so awful and beyond comprehension that I ultimately decided to document it here. I will start by saying that I did not stay at this hotel, and I regret deeply that my family was never able to do so. We were scheduled to stay here in mid-March of 2020 and were incredibly excited to go. We all know what happened during that week. We were scheduled to arrive in Bali the day borders began closing worldwide. We still planned to go despite warnings from the Canadian government to return home imminently, and only when our flight to Bali was cancelled did we decide it was time to head home. At this time, I emailed every hotel we were scheduled to stay at. Every one of them immediately offered to cancel our reservation and provide a full refund without hesitation given the extraordinary circumstances (despite every one of them being non-refundable expedia reservations) with one raging exception. You guessed it, this one. My original email was met with immediate resistance, unlike any of the other hotels. I responded and mentioned something about writing a tripadvisor review if they were not flexible, as this as we know along with social media are customer's only methods of recourse when businesses behave unreasonably. This was when Chris stepped in and completely lost it. I received a raging gaslighting response in which I was accused, among other things, of attempting to take advantage of the situation, lying about my Canadian citizenship, and lying about borders closing (which in hindsight seems even more ridiculous now than at the time). I then responded by providing a photo of my Canadian passport, along with an article about the Canadian government ordering citizens home. I spent the next several days playing nice with Chris and attempting to appease him so that he would do the right thing and offer to provide at least return vouchers if not a refund. Eventually after several days and emails attempting to play nice and make Chris feel as though he were in control, he agreed to provide return vouchers, which, at the time, I was happy to accept. The situation continued to evolve and as it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to return given the covid situation, I again repeatedly requested a refund, which he refused each time. Still, I attempted to give the business the benefit of the doubt and assumed that they were likely struggling financially as a result of Covid (like everyone else) and that this was the reason they continually refused the refund. What happened next is what made me realize that it had nothing to do with money and was personal for Chris, and what ultimately led to me writing this review. After a year of waiting for my travel insurance claim to be processed, and after an appeal of an original denial, my travel insurance company offered to provide me full compensation for the lost hotel stay. All they asked is that I provide proof of having surrendered the return vouchers. I then emailed the hotel (Chris) and explained this, and asked that he confirm by email that the vouchers were no longer valid so that I could receive full compensation from my travel insurance company. They get to keep my money, I get reimbursed, everyone wins, right? Apparently not. Chris then went out of his way to in fact send an email indicating that the vouchers were still valid, and actively attempted to sabotage me and prevent me from getting refunded the money. This is when I knew it was personal for Chris. Luckily for me, the insurance company was willing to accept my willing surrender of the vouchers despite his active attempts to sabotage me out of spite. I finally received full compensation last month, over one year later despite the ongoing attempts of a vindictive manager named Chris at this establishment to sabotage me and prevent me from doing so. I am sure there will be a really angry gaslighting response similar to the original email I got from Chris in response to this review, but I no longer care. I no longer have to play nice and try to appease Chris and make him feel in control. I got my money despite him doing everything in his power to prevent it. So, in conclusion, stay at this hotel. I'm sure it's great. I wish I could have. I'm sure most of the staff is equally great. Just beware of a vindictive manager named Chris whom you should not trust under any circumstances.

It was lovely to catch our breath back at Gilli Air's Sunrise resort on our last leg of our trip to Bali before coming back to our usual hectic lifestyle in the UK . Soft sandy beach, not far from our Signature Suite made this a truly memorable holiday.

We loved this place. The special touches didn’t go unnoticed from the plumeria flowers throughout the room on arrival to the fantastic soaps and lotions in the bathroom. Hot water in showers. The restaurant served amazing food and the staff were really friendly and attentive. The pool area was beautiful and refreshing. Bike rental was easy and the bikes were in good repair.

Our bungalow had it's own private little courtyard, huge ceilings and very tastefully decorated throughout. An open feel bathroom and top notch soaps, shampoo, shower gel, body lotion which you can buy as well ( I did). The main receptionist was a delightful young man ,very welcoming. On arrival we were given a welcome drink, homemade cookies and our own bamboo straw to keep and use . All very eco friendly there which we loved. Breakfast was more than adequate with western and Indonesian cuisine, the restaurant was very good and the evening BBQ very good value for money with a free salad bar. All staff very friendly and helpful. Nice big open lounge area with lots of comfortable seating. The pool area was lovely, quiet with lots of great loungers, chairs etc. Snorkelling right in front of the hotel was fantastic, we saw turtles every time we went out. However I would recommend fins as sometimes the current is deceptively strong. I would recommend this hotel although if I went again I would probably stay somewhere a little cheaper as it was pricey compared to others. No wifi in the room!!! For the money I would expect this. Overall though a beautiful room, very very nice hotel.

Really cool and relaxing location and also really great food! Especially our waiter Zazli !! He was really nice and kind and gave us really good recommendations doesn’t matter for what( food or drinks..etc.) everything he told us was just bomb and perfect! We came the last couple days here and we are really happy that we found this place and that we had such a great dedicated waiter! We loved the food and drinks. Doesn’t matter what we order, everything was fast there not to fast and not to slow . They are all really caring about you as a guest. And as I just said the work that Zazli is making is just incredible good! Which is also a reason that we will come back for our next vacations here and stay here. So doesn’t matter who’s the boss: Take care of this guy! He’s really good in what he’s is doing! So take care Zazli! See you next Year🤙🏼🍀 Your Michel and Pia
