As some friends invited us to visit them while they were in a timeshare at Cayley Lodge, we booked in for one night at Cayley Mountain resort. At the outset, I should say that we are pensioners and did not take advantage of the numerous activities on offer, and I would recommend this resort to people with young children. Pictures on the website show stunning views, but we were put into room 32b which overlooked a car park. The unit was spotlessly clean, but had a bar fridge which shone a light onto the bed and there is a side window with a louvre blind which lets in the light, onto the bed, from a powerful outside light. We had booked on a B and B basis, but left in the early morning as we were both wide awake. I would not dissuade anyone younger from visiting this resort, but I would recommend checking on the site of the accommodation. Incidentally, the unit occupied by our friends was very nice and overlooked Bell dam. The unit also had a huge indoor fireplace, and they thoroughly enjoyed their week there. If visiting, be prepared for an atrocious access road, although that is not unusual in South Africa! TonyC Howick.

Dear Tony, Thank you for your review. We are sorry that your booked suite failed to meet your personal expectations, especially as you were only staying at our resort for a single evening. We greatly appreciate the fact that you have nevertheless endorsed our resort to potential guests. Kind regards Cayley Mountain Resort

Once we arrived at the resort it was lovely- the road getting to the resort is a nightmare though. We were here a couple of years ago and the road was bad- now its far worse- lots and lots of potholes and hardly any tar left on the road.
We stayed in a 3 bedroom en suite room(24A,B and C)The rooms are beautifully decorated and have everything that you can ask for. The kitchen is very well equipped.
WIFi worked well.
We booked all three rooms (in the one house) and that gave us access to the kitchen, lounge and diningroom as well as the heated splash pool.
If you just hire the one bedroom and bathroom you would have to eat all your meals in the restaurant.
The restaurant is being refurbished so they have a temp one available. We did not have a meal there so cannot comment on the food.
The activities are quite pricey except for the inflatable water park which is very reasonable_ R50 for the whole day.
The kids jungle gym and jumping pillow kept them busy for ages.
We did a hike the one morning- easy and only about an hour and a half.
When we visited a few years back we did a different hike every morning- now they only do hikes a few times a week and its the same route.
They give you a daily programme when you check in so you can see what is on every day.
The little shop on the premises- is very pricey.
The dam is nice to spend some time at as they have a bar and some umbrellas and loungers and a couple of braai's.
If you do go to Cayley lodge and want a good meal and some really delicious baked treats pop into The valley bakery- not far down the road- maybe 5km'S
Its well worth a visit.

Hi Debbie, thank you for your thoughtful and detailed review! We're glad that you had a lovely stay, and that the kiddies especially had a blast with our facilities 😎. While the access roads are managed by the municipality, we will continue to advocate for improvements. Your recommendations are really appreciated, and we'd love to have you back soon for another magical mountain escape 🌄.

Arrived at the lodge and was assigned a unit that was not cleaned. I highly recommend not wasting your time going to this lodge. It does not provide any value for money nor does it leave one feeling relaxed.
To ensure a fair / unbiased review, here are pros and cons of staying here.
Pros:
1) Breathtaking views of the Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle mountain ranges
2) Hammock, trampoline and pool on site
Cons:
1) Cleaning staff are slow
2) All appliances (iron, ironing board etc) are in terrible quality
3) Bathroom bins were all broken
4) Wifi is useless
5) The games room hardly had any games in there
In summary, I would NOT RECOMMEND staying at this venue.

Very disappointed with the resort. To start off with, the metal waste bins in the toilet were broken. Soap was only supplied in one shower. On Monday evening, while my daughter was asleep, i heard strange sounds above the dining room table. There is a wooden feature above it- (logs lined up). The sound grew louder and i eventually carried my daughter out of the lounge into the bedroom.
The next morning, there was animal droppings all over the dining room floor and tablet. Our food was messed with droppings of some kind. We advised the cleaner the next morning promptly, who cleaned up. This occurred again on Tuesday night. On Wednesday afternoon, Bats flew out of the feature and circle the room . Bat droppings were again seen on Thursday. I informed the receptionist who subsequently advised me that the clear had never mentioned this to them. I wrote an email to the manager asking him to please contact me ASAP to view the unit. I asked to see the manager but he was out. i left a message for him, to date he did not contact me. Pretty much a don't care attitude.

We had a 3 bedoom unit on the cliff edge with the greatest view over the dam. The unit itself will be refurbished shortly, so there were signs of wear and tear. In a few months all units will have splashpools and outside braais so it will be even better for families. The road to the lodge is very bad. I would suggest a vehicle with higher ground clearance to handle the potholes. The sight boards to the lodge needs attention but Google maps takes you there easily. Remember to buy all your supplies on route. The staff were friendly and helpful. Overall a great experience.

We are thrilled that you enjoyed a pleasant stay overall and indeed, the refurbishments sure are something to look out for😍 ! we stayed in a self catering 8 sleeper unit. Luckily we were not 8 people as it really is a three bedroom unit fit for only six adults. The views were really spectacular and the place is clean and very pretty. Sadly the units don’t have a private patio or outside area like most self catering units and we didn’t feel like we had much privacy. We had to keep bedroom curtains closed despite the beautiful views and surroundings as there were people playing soccer on the lawn right outside our windows. There is an indoor braai but it is right by the curtain which we were scared to burn.
The location is five star and the staff are really nice.

Must be ne of the best views in the Drakensburg. The lodges are well appointed and the grandkids had a ball. The inflatable water park at R 50 per head kept the occupied for hours. I had a few niggling criticisms after our visit which the resort responded to immediately. Most impressive. The road could be challenging in a low vehicle. The restaurant is typical pub food but my stuffed trout was very good.

Hi Farrarmere, Thank you for providing us with your feedback. We are glad that you liked the overall service and hospitality. The Drakensberg region does not have the easiest roads as the area itself is very remote and we understand the last kilometers of the gravel road are in a state and we have appealed to our local municipality to assist in at least grading the road. We are also re-designing our menu in hopes of improving our offerings and adding more options that guests can enjoy. Thanks again for staying with us and we hope you'll visit us again soon. Regards, Cayley Lodge

Cayley Lodge is an awesome place. A few Things that need attention, No fire blanket in the kitchen, the open shower caused the towels on the rack to get wet and the floor tiles were very slippery. If not careful water from the shower could affect the bedroom carpet. Pity that the road to Cayley is so bad.

Hi dlangsford1955, thanks so much for leaving us this valuable feedback! We are super pleased that our gorgeous resort provided an enjoyable holiday for you, and have communicated your suggestions with the relevant management teams. Unfortunately, the pesky state of the road is largely due to our resort's remote location, and we do regret any inconvenience this may have caused. We appreciate your support and hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back real soon!

The road to the resort reminds you that the best destinations are at the end of difficult routes... it's just that KZN road department is not repairing the potholes on the roads.
It's not so bad just take it easy
Check in is a breeze, a welcome breeze after a hot ride
We had chalet 24, one of the recently revamped chalets. Very neat, very warmly decorated.
The views of the Drakensburg mountains are magnificent
The manager Derek is really a wonderful guy and a great asset to the resort.
Since the last time I was there (2016), there are notable changes and improvements. The road to the dam is easily accessible with any vehicle whereas it used to only be accessible with raised (high ground clearance) vehicles.
The water sports are a great attraction
Well done to Derek and the team

A normal sedan will be OK, keeping mind that the last bit of road to Cayley is very bad and you will need to drive very slowly. If you intend to do a lot of sightseeing you might find having to negotiate that road inconvenient. Remember to check with them regarding recent flood damage, if any. Enjoy!
