Detailed Reviews
Amazing location for hiking and exploring the Drakensberg. The hotel is a little dated, but there is nothing missing. The rooms were spotless, the staff are incredibly friendly and always willing to assist and the food was spectacular (as a vegetarian there were only 2 meals where the options were limited - one being their famous New Years day braai). Definitely the best position in this area in the Berg!
One word of caution - over the Christmas New Year period they have a lot of activities for kids and adults... try get a room far away from the main area if you do not want to partake! This is not a luxury quiet retreat, its a busy hotel in the most perfect setting.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, Carolyn New Year is a special time of the year at Champagne Castle Hotel, and quite different from the rest of the year. As you point out, there are many activities during this period for Children and Adults, as our normally quiet and tranquil Hotel celebrates the holiday season and the welcoming in of the new year. I'm so glad you were able to walk out onto the mountain and enjoy the spectacular scenery inside the World Heritage Site. We are fortunate to be located at the top of the Champagne Valley up against the most beautiful mountains. Thank you for staying with us, and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to this part of the Central Drakensberg.

We visited Champagne Castle Hotel in December. Unfortunately the weather was not the best, however this did not detract from the stay or the views. It was wonderful to see the peaks with clouds and enjoy walks without too much heat.
We arrived at the Hotel for a warm welcome. Our room did have a couple of minor issues which were sorted immediately.
The room and en suite were spacious clean and very satisfactory with a small individual terrace
Morning and afternoon tea and coffee, are served with the most wonderful scones
Lunch and dinner is provided by way of a buffet. The choices are pleasing and the quality of the food is first class. I would note however that there is a cut off time for children at dinner. We chose to reserve a table after the child friendly period but as the restaurant was a lot quieter the roasted meats could be a little over done. I must state that the chef was very obliging in cooking fresh to my requirements - Well Done.
Overall - This was just what we needed. We relaxed, over indulged and enjoyed
One note for the hotel would be a little additional training for the waiting staff with regards to wine service. Our waitress was so willing and eager to please.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, Kenneth I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay at Champagne Castle Hotel. While the weather is always unpredictable up here in the mountains, it never fails to gift you with incredible views of the Central Drakensberg. December should be about relaxation a little over-indulgence and plenty of enjoyment. Thank you for your feedback with regards to wine service and training. I have met with our F&B Manager to take it further. Thank you for staying with us, and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit

This resort was host to our party of 16 for an 80th birthday celebration and reunion from around SA and Australia. It was a perfect choice and exceeded expectations. Exquisite scenery, comfortable accommodation, and excellent dining made for a great holiday. Despite being fully booked, the hotel catering coped brilliantly, and the resort never felt overcrowded or noisy. The hotel went to much effort to host a special New Years eve party which catered to all ages, and also set a beautiful table for our party's birthday celebration lunch.
Some areas of service could be improved, notably the very poor reception we had on our arrival, and sluggish drinks service in the dining room - though overall hotel staff were friendly and obliging. There was little /no holiday kids entertainment, despite that being advertised. And the deluxe Mountain view suites are in dire need of at least a ceiling fan, if not air-conditioning, in the height of summer.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, G M We're so glad you selected Champagne Castle Hotel for your 80th Birthday Celebration and Reunion. We are fortunate to be located in the World Heritage Site, as our guests enjoy some spectacular views of the Central Drakensberg. New Years Eve was a wonderful celebration and it is a highlight on the Hotel Calendar. Thank you for your feedback with regards to Reception and the speed of the drinks service. I have met with both teams to discuss your feedback, as it should not have been your experience. We have also embarked on a refresh of the hotel, and your suggestion for ceiling fans / air conditioner is on our list. Thank you for staying with us, and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to this part of the Central Drakensberg

Room was dirty: carpets need a good steam clean, furniture needs a good steam clean with cushions etc and curtains need to be washed. There was blood on our curtains and the warm blankets were either 20 years old or really dirty
Pillows were uneven and terrible to use. They all need to be replaced
Food was terrible: I wanted to cancel early on due to bad experiences with vegan food at other holiday destinations and they 100% assured me I would be catered for. The chef even called and relayed all the things they would make for me. Get there and literally every conversion and promise went out the window. The omnivores, vegetarian, pescatarian, Jewish, Muslim etc etc people were catered for and I got roast veg and rice almost every lunch and dinner. I was also initially given rotten almond milk. Thank goodness I tested it first as I was 6 months pregnant. I couldn't eat a single dessert. Fruit is not dessert! So i asked if they could make something for one meal. Scones with almond milk? Very easy but it never happened. Pretty frustrating being 6 months pregnant and ignored
The setting is magical. The green mountains and forest are truely incredible so if thats all you're after then its awesome but still not worth the exorbetant December price
If you want to sit at the pool its lovely bar almost every guest smoking at the pool There are no rules against this
Be sure to know what you're getting into with hikes, some are hectic, many people threw up along the way: the guides don't say anything unless you ask and wont answer questions clearly
No doubt I will go back to the Drakensburg but will rent a self catering unit
Also I had booked massages 3 months prior and the spa doesnt remind you about the appointment. Quick SMS would do. Bizarre!! No way I could remember a booking for massages three months on

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, Lisa I'm so sorry that we didn't meet your expectations. I have met with the full Management Team to discuss your feedback. It's certainly not what we want any of our guests to experience. Our Spa is booked well in advance (during busy periods like December) and appointments are all up against each other to meet our guests requirements. There just isn't enough time to send SMS's, but we are discussing a solution. Our guided walks are all rated 'medium to low activity'. We leave the heavier hikes for those fit enough to take them on, in their own time. Thank you for staying with us

To start with the bad news: for a 4 start hotel I would have expected airconditioned rooms as well as wifi in the rooms.(there is only wifi in the restaurant and pool area) Next to that, the hotel is old, rooms and hotel lack atmosphere, certainly in the huge dining area and a dresscode after 6 pm, no shorts, is a bit odd for an informal hotel and I would say, also the food is just average.
The good news, it is an amazing setting literally at the foot of Drakensbergen. Step out of the room and start hiking, maps available at the lobby. from 30 minutes to 4-5 hours, really stunning. Pool as very good, good beds and umbrellas. No service around the pool though, but the bar is close.
Good beds in the room, good shower too, even a bath if you want. Again, all old, but all work.
Except for the quality of the food, the choice is large, at both breakfast, lunch and dinner. Vegetarian not a problem. Good winelist at very reasonable prices.
About 30 km from Winterton, you cannot miss it, and for the golfers, see other review, the Champagne golf course is really good.
I give it an average rating as I think it needs a few of the upgrades mentioned above to make this a 4 star facility, but I can understand why most rate it higher as I suspect this kind of place attracts more nature lovers than people that care about comfort / atmosphere.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, Michel We are fortunate to be located in the World Heritage Site. Our guests enjoy some incredible views and direct access to many trails onto the mountain. Our free WiFi in the main Hotel buildings, is simply because there is no possible way to get more bandwidth to our location. We have tried multiple solutions. Being located at the top of the Champagne Valley up against the mountains, doesn't make it easy to get Fibre to us. We are able to give Wifi to all the rooms, but it would be terribly slow. We have also begun a revamping process at the Hotel. It started last year with the Tennis Court, Bowling Greens and some of the other public spaces. Now that the busy holiday season is behind us, we are moving to the rooms and Chalets. Thank you for staying with us. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to this part of the Central Drakensberg.

We truly enjoyed our stay. I loved the family room that they gave us. It was clean.
The COVID protocols were the best I've seen. From the rooms being provided with extra sanitizing equipment and the dining Cutlery being wrapped in a brown paper bag.
Staff are friendly.
My husband was sick on the Saturday and did not go for the buffet supper. The manager allowed me to take a plate of food to him in the room. We appreciated that so much.
Will definitely come back for a family vacation.

We were thrilled that CC Hotel made such a big effort to keep us all Covid safe - cutlery in brown bags, and chef dish up buffet behind a perspex screen. The could have spread us a little further apart though. For a buffet that was severely effected, they did a really great job. Salads and puddings in jars, is a great idea! Just check for rusted lids though ;-) Might be better to use another type of lidded jar. The staff were fantastic!! Polite, courteous, hospitable - a great testament to good management. The rooms are comfortable, and the views are spectacular. The Spa staff did a most excellent massage too. I can't wait to return to this hotel!

The setting for this hotel is stunning with a fabulous view of the mountains. The standard, ground floor rooms were large and spacious with huge bathrooms and a very pleasant private patio. There's a lovely swimming pool - large, clean with lots of sunbeds. The food was extremely plentiful and tasty, and given that the cost is on a full board basis, it offers really good value for money. There is a good selection of walking trails starting from the hotel and the easiest one (chosen by our group of oldies) was scenic and enjoyable.

We stayed in a self-catering unit for two nights. The two bedrooms, one en suite with bathtub, the other with its own bathroom across the hall, were more than adequate, the kitchen spacious with ample plates and utensils to cook with and eat from, and a large fridge with separate freezer compartments. Upstairs was a small loft with two single beds and a separate bathroom with shower. Our large living room had a dining table with ample seating for six, and great views of the Berg across the open field. Outside was another large dining table and a moveable grill.
The self catering unit was close to the main hotel complex, pool and bar/restaurants. Although there were several other self-catering units close by, each was situated either slightly forward or behind the other so you never really felt that cramped. However the absence of any fence or vegetation meant that it was easy to see or hear people using their patios as well. Which was never really a problem. All types of birds came by as we sat outside, the peacocks offering surprisingly close company.
The one drawback I felt was that the windows lacked any type of screens so that if you opened the windows, you were subjected to mosquitoes all night. Closing the windows and using the fans wasn't usually an option as the fans were old and very very noisy. I also tried to take a bath one night and the water came out a filthy brown. That didn't make taking a shower very reassuring but eventually I did.
The resort is famous for its proximity to, and views of, the Drakensberg and as such it didn't disappoint, especially if you got up early in the morning to watch the sun rise. Overall this was an enjoyable stay but in future I might look for something with air-conditioning or at least a place with screens on the windows.

I have stayed in a few hotels in the Drakensberg and I can say that Champagne Castle was the most vigilant about hygiene and safety in terms of COVID. All meals were very well done, rooms were extremely clean ... and they have kept the small touches like a chocolate on your pillow etc. I think the people working here work very hard to ensure guest have a great holiday. The tea treats were still scones with jam and cream (other hotels have switched to biscuits etc.) and the fires in the lounges were always lit, mostly for atmosphere as it was not really that cold. Excellent.

It is catch and release. However, I have never, caught or see anyone catch. I use my own tackle, but it’s still relatively expensive. Hiring tackle is even more. Maybe it’s improved in the past year?
