We are very seasoned visitors to CCH and have been visiting for the last 50 years at least. However on this trip we were pretty disappointed. There is a noticeable absence of management and guidance as well as maintenance. Though mindful of a recent fierce storm which would challenge any maintenance team, the walkways to the deluxe suites and dining room were really dirty and unkempt as were the lounge and tv room. It didn’t appear as though anyone was really paying attention. The food at night was very good, but the lunch very disappointing indeed. The generator came on at 5pm and remained on for the balance of our stay. It is dreadfully noisy so the sense of peace you go to CCH for was obliterated. The whole hotel felt tired and unloved and in need of a cash injection. It is very sadly no longer the polished and well oiled establishment it used to be. Though the mountains will forever lure us back.. one day that simply won’t be enough.. and CCH should not rest on their laurels.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay, Jenny Firstly, thank you for being a loyal guest of the Hotel, over such a long period of time. I'm sorry to hear that you felt that our property is not up to the standard you have been accustomed to. The recent storm did damage many parts of the property, and the normal maintenance and upkeep team have been redeployed to the areas the storm damaged. I personally inspect the walkways/areas daily that you refer to, and liaise with the property team when it's not looking as it should. We have almost caught up with storm havoc, and our team will get back into their normal routine. I've been at the Hotel for 20 years now, and have never seen a storm like what we experienced. I have met with the Housekeeping team to collectively inspect and re-look at processes in the lounge and TV room. Your observation should not ever be the case. The generator is unfortunately a necessary and unwanted evil for all South Africans. The reason it never went off was because Eskom lines were down, and it then becomes a toss up between no electricity or no noise. When we originally installed the generator it was a god-send for all of our guests (of course, back then there was no load shedding and was only used for storms and the resulting outages). Now that we have regular outages it has become a nuisance. I appreciate that. We are unable to move to a quieter form of power, as our location means we do not have enough sun to keep the lights on when load shedding occurs. Whilst we have, in the past 2-3 years, completely rebuilt the Kitchen and Swimming Pool, re-surfaced the Tennis Courts, re-done the restaurant and trimmed back a large number of trees that had grown too close to the property, this has not made the needed impact on the busier areas of the hotel where guests such as yourselves notice changes. We are consistently working on completing a refurb to the entire Hotel, and I do hope you begin to see those changes in the future. Thank you again for your feedback. I can assure you that we are not resting on our laurels or on the beauty of our surroundings. We are, as always, deeply committed to ensuring the Hotel keeps it's high standards, and are doing everything we can, as quickly as we can to achieve this. Thank you for staying with us once again. I look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit

Champagne Valley is my favorite hiking ground in the Drakensberg, and the Champagne Castle Hotel is my favorite place to stay. That is why I book a chalet year after year. The management of reservations, the reception, service, food, the gardens, everything I can think of that could impact on the quality of my visit, is of an exceptionally high standard.

Sadly a disappointing stay. We left early. The chalet was old and tired. Dirty upholstery. Kitchen supplies inadequate (eg no bread knife). Toaster blew electricity. On the upside, the staff were responsive and lovely. The cost is over the top for what we got, and needs to be priced appropriately for the dated and neglected chalet. While we understand the covid disaster for the hospitality industry, honesty in pricing might have made us realise this is actually quite downmarket. Such a pity. Champagne Castle is an institution in such spectacular surroundings. Tip from us - we finally realised we had stayed in a “suite” a few years ago. That was lovely! A few years old, unlike chalets which appear ti be about 30 years old. However these are not accessible for booking on the website or booking platforms - reception told us we should have phoned. Disappointing.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, Eileen I am sorry you had a disappointing stay with us. I do apologise that there were kitchen supplies missing. I've met with the housekeeping team to discuss the importance of spotting missing utensils in the Chalets. Sadly this happens from time to time, as previous guests accidently pack items they didn't bring along for their self-catering stay. We appreciate how critical it is that we stay on top of this. Thank you for staying with us, once again. We do appreciate your support
