Two self-catering cottages high in the Central Drakensberg in a 235-acre eco-estate of waterfalls, indigenous forest, hiking trails, wildlife, birding, and dramatic mountains. The estate is off-grid — all power comes from a solar plant — and the water is fresh and clean from mountain streams. You have no carbon footprint here. The cottages have fireplaces in the bedrooms, king size beds, large walk in showers fully equipped kitchen and an outside dining area with barbecue facilities. All linen and towels are provided and a daily cleaning service is offered. This is a place of peace and seclusion. We would love to welcome you to a wonderful place in the Berg.

The rain had stopped when we got to our cabin, leaving drops shining on all the plants, the very many trees around us, that natural damp smell I love. Mist sat in the valley before us, but little glimpses of the collar of mountains above, could be seen as the breeze shifted. It cleared up later. We'd taken a short walk by the full, icy stream rushing by our cabin. Then a shower, a supper cooked on the braai, the fire in the bedroom lit, and with mugs of Milo warming our hands, we sat outside, an incredibly clear, star filled sky above. After glorious, deep sleep, bundled within a cocoon of thick duvet & blankets, I rose to make coffee. Now the true beauty was seen. The forest around us, the high mountains above split by shining lines of waterfalls, the valley reaching endlessly away. A long, slow breakfast, watching the sun pushing the clouds back over the collar, leaving a beautiful, blue sky, a gentle breeze, our plan for a great day's easy hike up to a waterfall, eagerly anticipated. And so, each day. Cozy nights lit by the glow of the fireplace, sunny days, hikes through forests and across open fields, breathless dips in icy pools, stopping often to look around at the timeless beauty around, lunch eaten leaning against sun warmed rocks. It's snowy chill must be incredible. It's a private place, just 2 great cabins sleeping 2 adults each. Quietly hidden deep within the Park, a variety of walks, some linking to the Park's own. Perfect solace to the burnt out, drained city dweller.

Thank you for your lovely review. We get to live in our mountain paradise every day, but our greatest joy comes from sharing it with others, especially those, like you, who appreciate its beauty and uniqueness.

I'd go back in a heartbeat. This area is one of the most underrated places for hiking and iKhayalamafu couldn't be better located. The cabins are beautiful and Ricky and Paul have thought about everything you could possibly need. I also love that they are off the grid and as green as possible. We spent most of our time hiking with a long day hike up Sterkhorn/Mt Memory and back which took around 8 hours. There are plenty of walks and hikes in the area for every fitness level. On the way in or out, it's worth stopping in at Chocolate Memories, the Brewery and/or the Bakery - all 10mins from the accommodation.

Thanks, Lloyd. Your walk up Sterkhorn was for us the highlight of your visit, and we're glad you enjoyed it. And you're right—you can't go wrong visiting our chocolate factory and brewery! We hope to see you and Marcella again.

I am half wanting to share this secret place, half wanting to keep it to myself... but here it goes! Paul & Ricky are wonderful hosts, along with their doggos Hector & Sheba. Our little home was cozy and comfortable, and off the grid! We stayed in Ingwe overlooking the mountains in front of us. The cottage itself has everything you need, and the braai area is perfect to spend your evenings. We only stayed 2 nights, which we felt too short - but we ended up doing the full hiking loop as well as seeing the Nandi Falls - which could have been split across 2 days. The area in general is full of things to do and see - the turn off from Winterton towards Ikhayalamafu has many shops, bakery, activities as well as the Falcon Ridge birds of prey show (which is also amazing to see). We absolutely enjoyed this part of our journey, and we will be back again! Next time we'll book out both cottages for our group and have the place all to ourselves!

We spent two nights in the Inyoka cottage, and absolutely loved our stay. Paul and Ricky were friendly and hospitable. We had a huge comfortable bed with a fireplace and electric blankets. The chalet is well equipped, and even provided dressing gowns. Paul is very knowledgeable with a wealth of information of the bush and mountains. The electricity is solar powered, and the water is heated with gas, so no power outages. Come prepared to hike - there are incredible trails all around.

I've spent 30 years hiking in this region of the Drakensburg but have never discovered iKhayalamafu. What an absolute delight!! The two thatched cottages nestled in the forest have been carefully thought out and offer everything you could wish for on a self contained holiday. What's more, they're completely off grid so you don't have to worry about leaving behind your carbon footprint. The wonder of the property lies in its remote location and expansive grounds that offer private trails alongside beautiful streams, waterfalls and through indigenous forests. The views are magnificent, as are the sunrises and sunsets. There are not many places that feed my soul like the Berg, and iKhayalamafu left me feeling so energised.
